I have additional tips that could make the impact detection experience better: - If you want DeTeCt to finish faster, increase the max instances counter on the top right. This allows the program to process multiple videos at once. - Be mindful of shadow transits. They are a frequent cause of false positives. In fact, the example at 7:50 is a false positive, but real impact flashes look similar. - If you see a flash in real time, keep recording for a while afterwards in case it was big enough to leave a scar in the cloud-tops. - AutoStakkert! 4 can run impact detection automatically after stacking (although I have not gotten this feature to work as of 4.0.5). You have to tell it where the DeTeCt program is under Output Options first (right side of the main window).

Beyond the very useful information and community building, I love the "gentle essay" feel of this video. The long, thoughtful intro - rather than the quick incisive tease - really works. And I'm liking the higher ratio of sincerity to snark for this subject. Ours is a patient hobby (similar to, say, fishing). This show conveys the "astronomer's lifestyle" philosophical vibe. Your videos are always great; it's very cool to see you broaden the palette of storytelling colors with this one.

If you have a fully automated setup, it would be great to set up a workflow to do this mostly automatically (up until the last review/email step) for any nights where you're not actively imaging. Jupiter/Saturn are often visible even when conditions are otherwise not great for other targets (due to moon, clouds, etc) and if you're not up for actually doing any imaging, if you could simply tell your rig to run a "night watch" on one of the planets any night you're not using it, it would let you contribute something useful with your expensive investment for minimum effort.
@DylanODonnell
@DylanODonnell 5 ай бұрын
True.. I’d be interested to know how you’d automate finding the planet though? Plate solving isn’t easy at those high focal lengths and autofocus is not an option for planes either. I think this some of the reason why there isn’t more data
