I really like that Summer is so knowledgeable and can 'chew the fat' with John. She adds so much to the episode. I hate it when an 'interviewer' merely asks questions and adds nothing to the program. John is a real delight and and his enthusiasm is infectious.

I loved this episode. I myself am an artist and art historian but I started in biology. I recommend you learn with cheap ficus microcarpa from a box store. They're tough, can be inside in warm weather, and they take to bonsai very well. Walmart and Lowe's usually have them. I would get a couple of the curve ones and not the fat rooted ones.

When we bought my in-law’s home I trimmed all the dead or weak growth off of two large, established juniper bushes. I didn’t know what I was doing at the time but they’ve pushed so much more growth and have since become the most gorgeous, graceful, bonsai-esque plants. We just love them. Definitely a recommended way to save or regenerate a tree or bush.

Thank you so much for this lovely clip about bonsai with a real bonsai connaiseur in the name of John. I have several times rewounded and played so as to well assimilate the content. As a non American I also appreciate the very clear and without hard accent of the English spoken by both of you. Again thank you and my dream is to be able to pay both of you in the midst of your plants. However if ever you are here in my tiny island Mauritius, lost in the Indian Ocean do let me know as I could show you some of my bonsais and our lovely native flora.

As a subscriber of your channel and 2-year self-learning student of bonsai, I'm super pleased to see this. Travel permitting, you guys should definitely head down to Mirai or other professionals' bonsai gardens - there is so much to see and I feel you and Ryan Neil will have so much to nerd out about when it comes to horticulture. I know your work prior to youtube is also important and prolific - I'm sure you'd love the rigour and depth of bonsai.

My parents had trouble with bears getting into their birdfeeders, too. They came up with a genius improvisation: They ran a cord across the trees overhead and created a pulley system. It looked like a high clothesline. They hung the bird feeders up just high enough that the bears couldn’t swat them down. The pulley system allowed them to bring them down to refill. The shepherd’s hooks don’t really work well if you have bears - we found one of our out in the woods and the feeder was covered in bite and claw marks.
