Thank you. Honestly one of the more informative videos I've watched on this. We did an egg incubation for homeschool, and ended up with 11 out of 12 hatching. Not quite the 50% we were told to expect. And we tried sexing them according to videos showing wing shape, and it was not reliable. We are now at week 5 and all the ones we thought would be roosters are looking to be hens, and 2 we thought were hens have turned out to be roosters. The 2 suspects have the leg nubs and have grown quite large over time, have the large combs. We tried looking at the tail feathers, and that didnt work.

I'm trying to convince my cockerels that they are hens. So far, focus seems to be the problem. ;)

Yogurt shooter 😅🤣 I've been super lucky with my farm store purchases, but hatching eggs from home has proven to yield far more cockerels than pullets. I didn't sex them right away, but out of 9 eggs that hatched, only 3 appeared to be cockerels. Three months later, it now seems that there are only 3 pullets and 6 cockerels. Not very good numbers, and if you're like me, you grow fond of the chicks, making it very hard to part with them 😔

I am relating to this now. We've grown attached. 11 chicks and we think 2- 3 roosters. Luckily there is a rooster sanctuary in the city near us that agrees to taking them, and a feed store that claims to sell them to people who need roosters. But still, worry they'll be used for food or fighting.

I have gotten 8 "pullets" from a farm store... and gotten 4 roosters. A bit disappointing.

Well... serve and protect is not their SOLE purpose, LOL. But for those of who want laying hens to earn their keep, yeah. This is great! I didn't know to look for the spur nub. I'm going out to assess my straight run young chickens--looking at feather shape too, hard to do with the white ones as it's harder to see. Thanks!
