Thanks you so much for all this great information about proper composting. I wanted you to know that your composting videos are very helpful, even to folks living far away from Fort Collins, I Live in Harford County, Maryland and I now have an awesome compost heap going thanks to you..

I wouldn't use waste hay from the side of the road, or anything from a roadway. You don't want pollutants from car exhaust going into your garden. Any hay or straw put in should be of known origin & manure , due to herbicides used in the u.s. that will persist through the animals digestive tract & composting. When used on the garden, the herbicidal action will affect what ur growing. The way people notice it first is curled leaves. The soil can be unusable for a few years. The main chemicals responsible are; Clopyralid, Aminopyralid, Aminocyclopyrachlor, and Picloram.

Pollutants from car exhaust, seriously? Now the rest, I do agree with. HOWEVER, I routinely collect sand/decayed leaves from low spots near drains along the road, because it's been thoroughly flushed out. It goes directly into my raised beds as amendments to my compost and humus.

Most backyard composters won't have enough material to make windrows. So... for smaller applications, go as high and thin as you can, like a termite mound. Heat rises; it doesn't go laterally very well, so make use of that rising heat by going taller. This will create a chimney effect, not only heating material where the heat would normally be lost in a cube, it also helps to draw fresh air in from the bottom and aid in the aerobic breakdown of your pile. That's the kind of science you want to apply for best results; not the exact ration of N to C.

Hi, I believe you are in error regarding the use of water as pathways for microflora and fauna. The thermophactors are thread- like organisms that grow very quickly. The threads, or mycelium, can grow a thousand metres of thread in a week, just from one microspore. These organisms grow along hay or straw stems, or other pieces of plant debris. This material often resembles a system of roads, and this is exactly what they are used for by these bacteria and fungi. The moisture content of the heap is entirely absorbed by the compost materials. It is true that the organisms need moisture, but there are reasons to believe that the creatures do not swim. On the other hand, this is what happens in an anaerobic digester. The animalcules do swim, as many are individual organisms. Masanobu Fukuoka proved this in his experiments. See 'The One Straw Revolution', which is named in part, for this very phenomenon. I use the term thermophactors instead of the usual thermophyllic, as the micro organism 'manufactures' heat through its very powerful digestive enzymes. But, there are times when the organisms do not 'love' heat. These enzymes disintegrate the molecules so rapidly that they can spontaneously combust, and all mycelium will die. This would be an occasion when too much heat is produced. If anyone wishes to experiment with spontaneous combustion, it is pretty easy to do. This is the recipe: Take one ton of green branches from pruning when there is plenty of green leaves. There should not be stems over about three quarters of an inch in diameter. Put the branches through a hammer mill, a chipper will not work as the branches must be shredded to provide a maximum amount of fibrous material. It may be necessary to put the material through the hammer mill twice if there are too many large pieces. Form the heap into a mound by ten inch increments for even watering until the mass is just moist. Keep the heap as steep as possible. If conditions are perfect, you should start seeing smoke seeping from the heap after a few days. A heap like this could provide heat to a greenhouse or home for weeks if it was properly contained and managed, as is done with simple compost heaps. Jean Pain ran a greenhouse at 35 degrees C for one year with a twenty tonne heap that was not combusting.

Does anyone know if these C:N ratios are molar ratios or mass ratios? Thanks!

It really doesn't matter, because you are never going to duplicate it exactly. Everything will eventually break down, so adding science to what feels right doesn't always work. I use one bag of freshly mowed grass to two bags of mulched leaves and dirt. It's a little hot, but it works great (160). If the weather is a little cooler, add more greens to generate more heat. I'd pit a farmer's compost heap against some slide rule egghead's any day.
