Fort Collins Contracted Residential Trash and Recycling

Did you know trash trucks are typically the heaviest trucks allowed on residential streets? When the City’s new contracted residential program starts on September 30, 2024, Fort Collins neighborhoods will see fewer trash trucks on their streets. This program will also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase recycling and yard trimmings resources for the City.

When I first moved to Fort Collins, I researched and I found a local company, Gallegos. And I hired them. 2+ years NEVER an issue, NEVER a missed pickup. I never had to call them. Then they were acquired by Republic (NO) Services. now I have 2 or 3 missed pickups ever 3 months, but the last month already had 2. I contacted them, put a missed pickup on their system, they NEVER come again to pick it up until is the next cycle. I never choose republic service and I'm pretty confident that 80% of the people of Fort Collins wont either. But they "won" the city contract, being the worst company by far. Now I'm OBLIGATED to have them as my only option. They will do whatever they want, since they are under contract now and you can't quit. The things that the city is doing are horrendous. Choosing the worst company and protecting them under a contract, definitely someone had some wins on this.

Republic completely missed a pick up a few weeks ago and has since regularly (every other week) left trash in the bin. I reported these incidents to Republic but they never came back to finish the job. I was informed by Dawn at Republic that trash sometimes gets stuck and doesn’t all cone out. They have left trash in the bin at least three times since they started servicing us. Until this, I never had a trash company fail to empty all the trash from my bin so I am not sure what point Dawn was trying to make. Dumping garbage is not difficult, but it’s like Republic sure wants me to think it is. I have also contacted the city of Ft. Collins and never got a reply. Finally, I contacted Larimer County Heath to see if they thought not picking up garbage is a health hazard. Still no reply from them either. I should mention, many of my neighbors have experienced poor service (and have complained) so the potential for unhealthy environmental conditions is not isolated. Republic needs to get it together and stop making excuses. Certain jobs must get done. The postal service delivers the mail and the water company provides clean drinking water and like these, and other public facilities, the trash company must pick up the trash. People enter into contracts with these entities and in return these entities have an obligation to serve the public. If Republic doesn’t straighten up soon, I will seek another solution for my home garbage disposal.

I agree, the Gallegos family did a great job for decades. I think Mr Gallegos (Grampa) started the business in about 1948. Did you look at the many financial penalties that Republic will have to pay for every kind of screwup they might do? Its huge. I wish they had picked someone else, but who else was realistically going to service 41,000 households?

@@m5pilot397 Noup, but you get a penalty payment for not using them, and that goes over the cost of getting another company.

It's messed up, you could argue that the opt-out fee coercive "The strongest legal argument against the Fort Collins opt-out fee would assert that it functions more like a tax than a fee due to its public policy goals, lack of direct service to the payer, potential coerciveness, and possible misuse of revenues for broader purposes. If a court agrees that the fee is a tax under these criteria, then the fee would be subject to TABOR’s voter approval requirement, and the city could be forced to either repeal the fee or hold a public vote."

I don’t like Republic. They’re a giant Corporation from far away. We never had any significant issues when the Gallegos family owned it. Like, almost zero issues of any kind. Really, really well-run, and local. Please tell me what other hauler could handle 41,000 households here. They’ve purchased seven new trucks. That’s about $2 Million right there. They paid for all of the new curb carts. That’s about 120,000 carts. They must be somewhere around $40 each, or more? That’s about $5 Million, plus-or-minus. Who else has the bucks to do that? I think there were just two other bidders for the contract. RAM was one, but I don’t think they could have handled a project this large. Not even sure who the other bidder was. If they are a mess after 6-12 months, then switch. If you can afford to live within the City of Fort Collins, you can afford $11, tbh. And you might get more competitive pricing from the others at that point anyways. They play games with the prices of their services all the time. There’s big money in trash.

Our cost will drop from about $40 per month to $11. I’ll take that . We switched to RAM because we were unhappy with Republic. RAM hasn’t been perfect either.

Yes. $11. I don’t like that either, but that’s one fast food meal. Where does your waste go?

@@m5pilot397 your asking the wrong question. It should be why am I subsidizing someone else's trash? And why am I being fined for choosing a different company?
