Regenerative Gardening with Blossom & Branch Farm

Күн бұрын

Today we are going to show you how we are able to grow ALL the plants we need for our small market farm (or large garden depending on how you look at it!) in just a small 6x10' backyard greenhouse! You could of course get super fancy with a huge greenhouse, or you could make a kit greenhouse a workhorse, which is what we've done here to let us grow around 30,000 plants each season!
In this video we will show you how we do it, and also go over our "overflow" structure that works well for the shoulder season between spring and fall: we section off part of our cattle panel greenhouse! Come along with us on this spring day on our flower farm to see how it all works (oh, and another update on our seed starting soil experiment)!
Some of our tools including trays and soil blockers can be found here:

So glad I found this channel!! Love that you take the time to explain things so well.For some of us old small market farmers... we need simple ,easier, 'down to earth', ways to do things. Use what you have!! I honestly had never heard of the cattle panel greenhouse till now!! OMgosh. I love to watch my other farmer friends with the hoophouses and acres. I'm just over 1/2 acre ..Z5...retired. That cattle panel would suit my space AND my fixed income!!! I could possibly get ranunculus to grow, finally. Thanks alot!!!!

I love the soil blocks. Just a fabulous method using them. It saves the time for fiddling with getting seedlings out of the plastic seedling pots. Love this channel.

I really enjoyed you showing using your greenhouse for actual growing in. Many have them set up like a patio or sitting place with a few plants around. Since my greenhouse doesn’t see a lot of direct sun in winter I need to up my game with lighting. We live among lots of tall trees so when the sun is low in the sky…you get the picture. 😊

It is so encouraging to see how many plants you are able to start in your greenhouse. Mine is similar in size, about 8x8. I have around 700 seeds started in there now. All is well and good until time to up-pot in a few weeks!

Love the channel, and I have been slowly watching all of your videos! Something that came to mind when I was watching this is that I would be cautious using fiberglass trays if they do not have a UV resistant coating. UV breaks down fiberglass and can cause fiber bloom which sheds the fibers all over the place. I would think that inside a greenhouse this would cause an issue with lots of direct light. Just something to think about.

What's your average seed strike rate & process? I keep my seed in a box in the fridge then soak most of them in a 1% H2O2 for 24 hours, then double seed into cells that go into a climate controlled grow tent that has racks in it. If it's direct sow it just goes from the fridge into the ground.

If you were in a zone 5b, could you still start flowers like eucalyptus and lisianthus in the glass greenhouse? Or would you recommend to start indoors then move them into the greenhouse?

Thanks for sharing!! I’m super curious about dog fur vs wool. I don’t have sheep but I have huskies and it’s a lot of fur! Do you have thoughts about grazing animal fur vs other animal hair? I might just experiment and see how it goes 😅

It's my first time growing hardy annual plants and I'm confused on after I harden them off and plant them out, do I have to protect everything if I get a hard freeze? I thought those plants could take the colder weather? I love your channel and am so inspired by you to grow in a more sustainable way. I always learn something new when you put out a new video and I can't thank you enough for all you do!!

Depending on how cold it will get and the plant, you might or they might be fine! Our bells of Ireland, lisianthus, sweet peas, foxglove are fine down to around 20 degrees!

I have been soil blocking for 3 years now and I use the same type of trays as you do. I came across a few farm channels that do soil blocking and they were linked to companies that sell soil blocking equipment and the trays they use don't have a solid bottom. The bottom is more mesh style and then they place the mesh tray into a solid tray for watering. They were saying using soild trays doesn't make sense when soil blocking because it messes with the air pruning. What are your thoughts about this? I'm wondering if I should switch to mesh style trays or continue to use solid trays.
@Blossomandbranch
@Blossomandbranch Жыл бұрын
I really prefer the solid bottoms! They are much easier to water and the blocks don’t disintegrate like they do with the mesh bottoms. I actually like the little bit of root system you get at the bottom with the solid trays rather than the mesh, gives me more root area to plant-if they air prune at the bottom the root depth is limited! Hope that makes sense!

@@Blossomandbranch so when it’s time to up-pot them, then they go in a pot or do they stay in this. Some of the seeds like tomatoes and peppers wouldn’t be ideal right? Just seeds that can be started then go right into the garden? I haven’t heard this so still learning
