You can also melt the bars into 1 oz silver coins, as you get older, and feel the need to use them. I would also highly recommend buying Gold for long term savings (for example to finance your house or something similar) and silver also for long term, but also emergencies. For example, in the case of the dollar loosing its value completely, to buy food and other nessecary goods with it directly from farmers.

Silver is extremely liquid. Even the 1000 ounce bars are trivially easy to sell, and the spreads are less, the larger the size. The disadvantage of larger sizes is simply that they are physically large and heavy. You can fit 1000,1 ounce bars in a short safe deposit box that will not fit a 1000 ounce bar, because it's too tall. On the other hand, it's much easier to pick up 1 object than 1000 objects. Also, 1000 troy ounces is ~68 pounds. A lot of people just can't lift that, sadly.

It's always fascinating to me how the human brain perceives volume based on shape. Even at the 5oz bar size there's tons of variety, some of which people would probably swear are under or over 5oz at first glance. Those bars also might have less than a gram of impurities. From what I understand, a lot of .999 silver may actually be higher purity than marked to a degree, its just most mints can't guarantee they will be so they settle for a blanket .999 label that can be met 100% of the time. Would be an interesting experiment to see the exact differences with a Sigma machine!

I've tried the 1oz coins, 10oz bars, 1kg bars, and 5kg bars. The 5kg bar is hilariously heavy but very impractical. 1k is a nice weight and good feel. That feeling you get when you hold one is hard to describe. The coins, yeah they're probably more useful for day to day stuff if we ever get to that point but i'm not as big a fan of them. @jayduffy76152 жыл бұрын
Hi Mary J, I have wondered the same thing in the past. What I have decided to do is to diversify by buying silver in different weights and shapes. I have a solid kilo bar but I also have kilos of silver in "silver slivers" (shavings) and in "silver shot" (BBs). If I am ever in a position to sell my silver, then the silver slivers or shot will be much more divisible so as to more accurately pay for something or to find a buyer for. Not everyone will be able to afford the Kilo bar.
@Mary-J2 жыл бұрын
@@jayduffy7615 Great advice! What I've done is exactly what you said, diversify. In the long run, smaller amounts are easier to sell for those of us without immediate connections to dealers/buyers. I like the idea of bars, they feel like wealth. My perspective is this. Why do you want it? Is it as an investment? Probably not, but if so, then the most popular is what you want - 1 to 10 ounce rounds and bars. Is it as a store of wealth? Maybe, or maybe as an insurance policy. As a store of wealth, larger bars probably make more sense. But if the purpose is for SHTF insurance, then a combination of larger and smaller makes sense. You would want smaller for smaller transactions, and larger for the store of wealth aspect.

What are you thoughts on buying silver now they have VAT applied?
@BackyardBullion3 жыл бұрын
I think it is expensive compared to gold at lower premiums
@cameron9695rhysd3 жыл бұрын
I want to hold both more long term with gold but I’ve ordered a small amount of silver to hold medium term (5 to 10 years) just worried a bit about the VAT as it’s not a universal tax whereas spot is worldwide. So I’m short is silver worth less to us in the UK rather than those in say the US?
@BackyardBullion3 жыл бұрын
It's still got a good value level, but if you take your silver to a dealer you will likely only get close to spot price, on the second hand market, selling yourself you will get a better price. But it's about ease of sale for a good price, I find gold so much better.

finally someone who gets it, its about the feel, it feels more tangible. Gold just isn't as satisfying as it's typically a small amount and reminds me of holding pocket change

I'll risk being a total muppet about it... 1) Umicore is Belgian. Sort of German but not really really. I said "french fries" once and two dutch guys handed me my ass while yelling "it's Belgian fries!!!". Origin really matters 🙊 2) Feels like the earth is pulling the tungsten down? I know right!...it's called gravity. They made a movie about it 🤣 Love the channel 👍

I've been looking to acquire physical silver as of late, as I foresee the price skyrocketing in the next few months. I own a lot of shares of "SLV," an ETF fund, but that price isn't necessarily directly correlated to silver. However, I've noticed something: The mark-up on Silver bars is INSANE unless you're SPECIFICALLY buying 1 KG silver bars. Sellers of these bars (as depicted in this video) only "mark up" their silver by 3-6%, but, on the other silver-bars mark-up is at LEAST 12.5%.
@GeorgE-yo5yc2 жыл бұрын
Then again, if like you say, the price skyrockets and goes, say, 100% - 800%, the 12,5% premium will be irrelevant,
@mycommentpwnz Жыл бұрын
@David Armstrong Why? Dollar is struggling. The BRIC nations are acquiring vast sums of silver & gold. When inflation retreats, Gold and Silver skyrocket. There are about a million reasons to own SLV right now. Or, are you scared the institutions who developed and maintain these ETF's are going to go BK?
@mycommentpwnz Жыл бұрын
@David Armstrong Yeah, when crime syndicates become synonymous with financial institutions, it's risky to buy any ETF, let alone just silver. Endless spoofing. Endless manipulation. Etc.

Decided to buy my first silver when I heard about the GameStop debacle. Investors were starting to turn to precious metals and all of a sudden, all the sites were selling out of anything made of fine silver. I decided to buy what I could afford from the available stock. Settled on a 1kg silver bar and even then, the product is delayed because of the volume of requests. looking back on the price of silver; one can plainly see that while there are dips, silver has never stopped growing in value throughout history. It's just a matter of holding on to it long enough(10-20 years) or possibly finding a rare opportunity to make a short term profit by flipping metal. Anyway, I have definitely started to pay attention to the price of precious metals...
@AY-vi2ld3 жыл бұрын
@@xXxJSCOTTxXx premiums are crazy right now. When things settle premiums will come down and there's a good chance of a big dip on the horizon, if that happens, you need to be ready for it, factor that in and good luck! Right now i think gold is a good buy, I have regrets that I FOMOd on gold and over paid compared to now, hindsight is always 20/20 but I'm still happy overall to have diversified

I would have noticed the door stop. I LOVE 1,000 ounce bars, mostly because of how hated they are and the low premiums. They do require paperwork, but when the time comes to sell you can cut it up.

Hi there, I really like the idea of getting into precious metals. It feels like a stable way of holding some asset. I know this will sound niave but I shall ask anyway. Where can I purchase silver at a competitive rate here in the UK? Regards all.
