(304) It used to be VERY fashionable to have prawn cocktail as a starter (I'm 68). You're right, Rik; there are lots of "nobody eats that anymore" kind of dishes that deserve a revival. Old is gold, baby!!! 😉

A walk down memory lane: flashback to the 50s & 60s Home Cocktail Party and Dinner menu with Prawn Cocktail as an Appetizer. That was accompanied with a jellied Tomato Aspic or Lime Cottage Cheese Jello and a Seven Layer Casserole or Steak with Baked Potato and Pineapple Upside Down Cake for dessert. Back in the day when hostesses wore fancy georgette aprons with wide crinoline dresses, rhinestone jewelry and cats-eye glasses. And of course ashtrays all over the house that you regularly had to empty while you and your guests were chain-smoking in the house while drinking and eating listening to music being played on LP records. Cocktails were Martinis, Manhattans, Rusty Nails, Black Russians or Scotch on the Rocks. Then everyone drove home drunk. A by-gone era.

I see a lot of people saying how different the American sauce is,well until COVID forced me to retire as the restaurant I was working in decided to close permanently and I was 75 at the time,I knew no one was going to hire me again. It was a top rated seafood restaurant,we did half a pound of warm shrimp with cocktail sauce,I would watch one of the shuckers(oyster chefs) make it,it was cans of tomato sauce, chili sauce( tomato sauce with onions ,garlic, spices a little corn syrup, but not very sweet) house made horseradish, tabasco sauce, gin, and Worcestershire sauce,so delicious it was served with the oysters along side the mignonette sauce.Funny you said you didn’t have avocado as a kid,I did, though we called them avocado pears,my Gran, used to cut in half, take out the pit,and fill the cavity with Worcestershire sauce then eat with a spoon.I still do that,it’s a great combo, when making avocado toast I mash it with the sauce, then sprinkle with the now very popular “Everything but the Bagel “ seasoning, really good😊

I absolutely love Prawn Cocktails and still indulge in them once in a while. They will never go out of fashion with me. You know you could also use both the smoked paprika powder and the chili/cayenne powder together and turn it into a 'hot' paprika powder. There are even ready made tins of the stuff from a Spanish brand. I highly recommend them, because it's quality powder.

I've never seen this, thanks for sharing. We always have the US version-ketchup, loads of horseradish, Worcestershire sauce is the base then perhaps lemon and pepper if you choose. We're of Eastern European extraction so it was really mainly an excuse to have horseradish. OK, we don't need an excuse-there's always a jar or root in the fridge. Yours looks quite elegant. Your sauce is lovely, halfway to a Russian or Thousand Island dressing. I'll be making it soon.

It wasn't a night out at a Stakis steak house or Berni Inn without a prawn cocktail starter. It was a flavour trend of the 70s and seems to have endured as an all time favourite. A highlight was discovering how to make the sauce at home and then all dinner parties started with the prawn cocktail. I remember there would be debate over better with salad cream or mayo. 😀

I had a prawn cocktail last Wednesday night! I do make them occasionally. I had some cooked prawns and iceburg lettuce that needed using, so I thought what the heck. Growing up in the 70's, they were an absolute highlight for us on the rare occasion we'd go out for dinner. We'd always get the prawn cocktail, even when there was a huge entrée menu. I absolutely nailed the Marie Rose sauce. I added a bit extra tobasco for a kick. Not hot, just twangy. I'd never seen it with cucumber, I really like the sound of that and will try that next time. Same with the tomatoes.

It's quite different from the American ones I used to make for the country club set, but it looks delicious! ❤❤❤

Oooo that sauce sounds so much better than U.S. shrimp cocktail sauce which always includes horseradish sauce. Such a simple, quick recipe! Thank you, Chef! After reading the history of Lea & Perrins I'm so wondering how different England's Worcestershire sauce tastes compared to ours. When it came to America for some reason they really loaded it up with sugar and salt (like 3x as much) and white vinegar instead of malt. No one knows why. Shirley in NH

I only know it with small Dutch shrimp, but this looks amazing! 😍👍🏻. And the sauce seems much better to me than store bought. Good to know what goes in there.

Love a prawn cocktail. My layering goes prawns on bottom, then sauce, salad and then more sauce (i like to eat the prawns last 😂). My sauce is just mayo, ketchup and Worcester sauce (but only lee & perins). The prawns were in the water for 16 seconds 😂

We had it except with shrimp. That and a fondue of some sort. These with a Saturdaynight game of pinochle or euchre plus a stack of 45s on the turntable along with choices of beverages.

Avocado in prawn cocktail?! As peculiar in the 60s as garlic bread! My Grandmother made prawn cocktail as a Christmas starter, I loved it. You can buy a supermarket offering but it is sh**te to put it mildly, so at last a proper recipe. I’m reminded of the seafood man used to go round the pubs selling cockles and the like (in a waxed bag with vinegar) - delicious. Now where’s the brown bread and butter…?

I still love a prawn cocktail, lol. Don’t tell anyone, ok! Yeah, you can keep the avocado, that doesn’t belong in a prawn cocktail, or the tomato, as much as i like tomato i’ve never seen it in one. I’d probably put 20 prawns in it though to make up for the lack of to tomato & avo. Gotta sop the sauce up with something!
