I use to work for a place that one of their best sellers was a monte cristo but they did the cooking quite a bit differently lol. Build the sandwich just like you did yours, but then they would spike the corners with skewers to hold it together and cut diagonally. Instead of the egg wash they would then chuck it into the beer batter they used for fish and chips and into the deep fryer it went. No melty cheese oozing out of the crispy fluffy batter so everything was held in. Less messy and incredibly delicious.

One of my all time favorite sandwiches! You can still get them in some restaurants here in the States. My favorite version came with a sweet/spicy Raspberry Jalapeño jam, which was perfect because the slight heat helps cut through the richness of the dish. That jam sent me down a rabbit hole of the fruity/spicy jam & jelly category which is worth exploring, imo.

The first time I had a Monte Cristo was in 1968 in the restaurant that was next to the enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland. The restaurant was called the Tahitian Terrace and they had a wonderful menu that included the Monte Cristo. They had a fantastic stage show which included Tahitian dancers and beautiful women performing the hula dances of the islands. My little brother and I insisted that we return to that restaurant the next day on our family vacation to Disneyland where we memorize almost everything in sight and especially that amazing Tahitian Terrace Monte Cristo sandwich. In my earliest days of cooking under my mom's watchful eye I was able to perfect the Monte Cristo sandwich. Sadly the Tahitian Terrace is long gone and has been replaced by several different iterations of eateries over the years.

There's a trick I learned for any kind of fried cheese sandwich, and it's basically once you are about 3/4 done cooking, sprinkle a bit of grated cheese (not much, be sparse) on the outside so it crisps up and gives you that great flavour of the cheese that melts out of the side and "overcooks" and gets crunchy, but now you have that with every bite. The trick is not to put too much on though. just a sprinkle.

In 1970, I worked all through HS at W.T. Grants. I used the butter wheel & then grilled the top-split New England hot dog rolls on a panini grill like a grill cheese on both sides. Then put in the chili, then the roller-grilled hot dog, and then the mustard or ketchup, minced onions and pickle relish. Some wanted sauerkraut, too, or minced cabbage on top for the crunch. They were 40 cents, and 45 cents with chili. I sold 230 hot dogs in two hours, in my aqua dress uniform, lol! For 3 years! At Christmas, we would open the front doors of the store where our popcorn machines were. Everyone came in, and then came over to me for a chili dog and a coke. Inflation-beating eating! Pepperridge Farms still makes the New England hot dog rolls, but they are less shallow now.

Hi from Southern California. This brings back memories. I worked in LA in the 70s and would have Monte Cristos at one of the restaurants in the Ambassador Hotel. That was the hotel where RFK was shot in June of 1968. It was turned into a high school some years ago.

That Roc is a mammoth sandwich if there ever was one! Raspberry jam? Never heard of having that as an accomplishment… different could be good because lingonberry jam with meatballs is perfect as it Turkey and cranberry. Thanks Ric

Yes all the accompanied jams work well. Whoever invented this sandwich back in the day probably didn't realise how many have been eaten from 1950's. Thank you. Best, Rik

This is how I learned to make these. It is always a triple decker with ham on one side and turkey on the other with mayo on the bread dipped in batter and deep fried. It is the best I have ever had. I have had the kind where they are fried like French toast and they are good too, but nothing compared to these.

back in the early nineties, for reasons that aren't relevant, I was in San Jose area of California and at a restaurant i had breadcrumbed wedges of cheese with fries and it came with ramekin of raspberry jam. Similar cheese and jam vibe to the Monte Cristo. Since then I have often put a bit of jam in an otherwise plain cheese sandwich.

The Monte Cristo at Bennigan's retaurant was special. I found a recipe for it shared by a cook that used to work there. The key is cut the sandwich into halves, diagonally, and very tightly wrap the assembled halves in food wrap and refrigerate overnight. Once unwrapped for cooking, it stays together and compact. Then you can coat it in the french toast egg mixture and, yes, deep fry it in vegetable or canola oil. Not simply pan fry it, but deep fry it until golden and crispy. Sprinkle lightly with confectioners sugar and serve with raspberry preserves. NOTHING else like it!

A place in Houston back in 80s made it with 3 slices of French toast and dipped it in a batter with cinnamon and sugar, extra thin slices of turkey, ham and bacon and Deep Fried it in a vat, served with fries and jam, or maple syrup. Wish they were still in business, I’d make the drive to get one. They would put it in the freezer for like 2 minutes to cool the candy-like shell…😍😍 They made a breakfast one with fried eggs too.

There was a restaurant here in Memphis called Hasting's Place that had a Monte Cristo sandwich, but their version was a bit different. It was served on rye bread with cheddar and Swiss cheeses, in addition to the turkey and ham, they added corned beef and used Thousand Island dressing rather than mayo. Also, they deep-fried it.
