You make this job look easy! To anyone sizing up this task, I've done everything on cars over the past 25 years.. except drum brakes. That said, I discovered there is no amount of cussing in humanity to curse this dreadful experience. I would gleefully drop my steering rack, or replace the synchros in my transmission over doing this horrid task ever again. I hate letting anyone touch my cars for service but I think this is one job I would take to a brake shop to have done to hold on to my sanity.

@@backyardchevy328 It seemed straightforward to me. I removed the wheels and drums to inspect today, and I'm down to less than 1.5mm brake shoe thickness. My drums on the inside look smooth. I don't see any leaking seals, and the springs all look good. I didn't check the horseshoe clamp, but I plan to reuse it as you showed. Crossing my fingers that it all goes well. The new shoes are only $22. New drums are only about $30, and they certainly are easy to replace (I got the M12x1.25mm bolts).

I was putting long spring above the adjuster lever into the wrong hole and wondering why it didn’t have much tension on it at all and why the adjuster level wouldn’t seat properly, was so frustrating wondering what I could possibly be doing wrong, rewatched your video and realized I wasn’t putting the other end of the spring in the right hole, realized what I was doing wrong and grabbed some tiny vice grips and struggled but got it to go in the correct hole and then the adjuster level sat correctly. Great video overall. Clear instructions and good video work. One item though. I could not get the top main spring off/on using his method. No doubt he's much stronger than me. For those who find it difficult to remove and replace the spring... In order to stabilize the brake shoes, I strung several zip ties together and tightened them around the circumference of the shoes. I did this with two sets of zip ties to ensure shoes didn't shift alot and the ties didn't snap. This made it alot less strenuous to do this procedure. Hope this helps. Thanks again for the video.

You make this look super easy. For anyone attempting this repair, it's definitely challenging, but not impossible. Give yourself ample time, maybe get a helper, and get all the parts and hardware beforehand. Be careful with the brake cylinder thing with the bushings, it's very easy to push it out completely and get air into the system. I got air into mine and am taking it to the shop to get the brakes bled. Overall, tough but worth it. You learn a lot!!! Thank you for this video, it's a gem!!

I made the same mistake. I fitted the seal back onto the wheel cylinder and then I bled out the air in just the rear brake lines and fortunately the wheel cylinder seal is holding and everything is working well. I was too aggressive trying to remove the main adjuster spring and pulled off the seal on one side. I need to work out more to manhandle those vise grips. Pulling while guiding the spring end into its slot was crazy difficult for me.

@@mikew1368question - will this stop you from being able to put the drum back on? That’s the current problem I’m having. Thinking it might be because air got into the system. Adjuster is already in as much as possible
@mikew1368
@mikew1368 7 ай бұрын
@@DeclanLangenfeld I used brake cleaner and a rag to clean up the brake fluid that leaked out of the cylinder first, and then bled out the air. Finally I got the cylinder compressed and replaced the drum with no trouble. I think if you bleed the air out first, the drum will fit. Also it helped me determine if the cylinder was not leaking. When the rubber boot wasn’t fit well. When I pumped the brake it caused brake fluid to squirt out. I thought I might have ripped the rubber boot and needed to replace the cylinder, but no leaks observed, so I was happy and everything worked fine after I finished and tested it.

Drum brakes are a marvel of engineering ! They are incredibly sophisticated, yet incredibly simple at the same. Most all drum brakes have the same engineering built into them, and after you have done a handful of them, you will realize there are only a few basic principle parts built into them. They are super easy to work on, and any of you watching this video will agree after completing your first drum brake job, they are just simple-simple ! And they keep getting easier, once you have a few under your belt. You just kind of develop your own little “tips and tricks”, to get it done right. Great video !

Thank you. This was an excellent detailed description for the Civic drum brake service. I really appreciate your clarity and all the tips and explanations. At the end, I thought it would be best to back the adjuster off a bit more to remove all drag (but still be super close) since I always thought the shoes should not be in contact with the drums (unlike pads that are supposed to drag lightly on rotors) until you hit the brakes (and the auto-adjuster will keep it just off the drums). Do you feel it is best to leave a little drag?
@backyardchevy328
@backyardchevy328 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you🙂 well when u adjust and it free spins but u can begin to hear the slight drag is best..but if u get it close the adjuster will adjust the rest if need be, so u can back it off a lil if u prefer...both are good to me

it will be a good Idea to specify the direction of the front and the back of the car and wich side you are working on to make it more clear, the video is great but I think this detail it will make it better

Well done and thank you. Gotta do a '98 Accord LX this weekend. 120K, back brakes have never been touched. I think the drums should be fine...

I like the camera view to see the stage set and not blocking the view angle with hands.

Great video B.C.! Good, clear instruction, thorough steps, and great camera work. I wish you had cleaned that little smudge of anti-seize from the front of the dust shield to make sure none got onto the brake shoe, but other than that, one of the best drum shoe videos I've seen. Two thumbs up!

The new brake drums you installed are not expensive. Are you happy with those replacement drums? My Civic LX is at 140k miles and might not need new drums, but for around $30 it looks so nice and clean. If I pull it apart and need to resurface the drums at my local auto shop, it will cost near the same and waste time. The Honda service tech said mostly they can reuse the springs and not need to resurface the drums. My Haynes book says to at least use an emery cloth and polish the drums. They inspected my drums as part of a free 16-point inspection and said they had a lot of life left.
