Having been to Howler myself, and seen everything it has to offer, it is such a sick riding destination. Max the owner, and everyone there at the park has such an incredible vibe, and even personally helped me out in tough times. Huge thanks to them, and it's cool to see this drop being built.

Here people have the tendency to try and skip the squirrel catcher telling themselves "I bet the trail will be easier than that first feature so I'll be fine"...We still have a lot of work to do to raise awareness
@LawrenceMacMacster10 ай бұрын
If you fill the first 50 feet with very high perched skinnies you'll get the job done . I've always dreamed of doing just that in my backyard but wife doesn't want to be sued 💀😂
@elguamo200310 ай бұрын
I agree, unfortunately, many trail systems do make the qualifier much harder than anything else on the trail so people have come to expect that everything else will be easier. If builders would consistently set the qualifier at about the same level as the other features then perhaps people will trust it?
@Carlostejeda-u8e10 ай бұрын
the first feature if its a proper squirrel catcher usually is the hardest that's why most will skip it if they do know they can't do it
@crazydonkeysbikeclub767410 ай бұрын
Sick drop, but actually looks pretty tame compared to a lot of the other features. When you can preview trails with rad videos like this, there really is no reason to not know what you are getting into. A trail progression matrix goes a long way in informing riders who haven't done their research. Would be great to see more trail networks put those out not just bike parks.
@motortiki9 ай бұрын
@@elguamo2003 I keep hearing this online, but I've yet to encounter it in real life. I've been to trails in Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, and New Mexico, and the squirrel catchers have never been the hardest feature on the trail. Maybe it's a regional thing, where do these crazy-hard squirrel catchers happen?

Been a fan for a while now and love how the quality and designs keep getting better every video, this one is top notch! Out of curiosity, around 8:24 you laid full length boards on cut a ton of excess of each side, just seems like a reoccurring theme in your videos that you always have a lot of off cuts and we don’t get to see if these get saved for future projects or sent to the burn barrel. Just seems like using a 8’ piece, you could plan for a 4’ wide layout and have zero waste. No hate at all, just curious!

So cool to see rock work on that scale. My favorite part of trail work is fitting all the big rocks together, but I’ve always been limited by what 6 guys can carry with a net.
@SmallSpoonBrigade9 ай бұрын
I kind of miss the days when I used to build rock walls by hand with small boulders. If you get pillars like this right, there's a decent chance that they will always be there. The ground will move a bit, but rock work like that when done properly lasts a very long time.

The thing to keep in mind with squirrel catchers, and skipping them, is that if it's the first thing I come up to and I feel I'm "going in cold" then I'm counting on the trail to ramp up in difficulty as it progresses with some sort of "boss-level" feature or series of features in the third act. (if not that late then at least in the second half of the trail.) I've tried this and been successful... In not sustaining *serious* injuries. Lol ...mostly...😅🤞🏾🤘🏾

At Duthie Hill Park in Issaquah, WA has a similar feature to the “squirrel catcher.” More people break their collar bones on that feature than any other feature at the park. They also have hoards of 9-13 year olds who can shred-shred.

Omg that song, it's one of my favorites. There's just one slight problem, drops at that height are pretty normal in street riding as well so I'd do that with no hesitation thinking "oh cool fun trail some drops gonna be easy" Except that I have no idea how to do jumps at all and I cannot do the rest of that trail at all. Except for that other drop.

Mught be a dumb question. But why not trying an electric planer to make the flat faces instead of the chainsaw? Or for a finishing pass. Its doesnt remove material as quickly, but the finish can be that buch better, producing stronger joints and making it less receptive to dirt and water
