Dear Andylink007, Thanks for leaving a comment! Viruses contain some of the structures and exhibit some of the activities that are common to organic life, but they are missing many of the others. And a virus can't procreate - one of the things a "living" orgasm must be able to-, it needs a host cell. So we speak about living but it's not really a "living thing". As mentioned in the video the diseases/complaints caused by a virus can be treated or an infection resolves by itself. Regards

YOU DID NOT explain clearly that the problem with persistence of infection is due to superinfection by bacteria AFTER the virus infection has ''lasted longer than expected ''. The virus is not susceptible to antibiotics but the secondary BACTERIAL infection which is causing the continuing problem IS susceptible. Simply put, virus infection weakens the host and either the host recovers , [ no meds needed ] or bacteria come along, take advantage of the weakened host and then antibiotics MAY be needed to stop it. This simple lesson is the MOST IMPORTANT to teach the public about the dangers of increasing bacterial resistance , which is due to the indiscriminate dishing out of antibiotics , when USUALLY they are not indicated in common virus infections.

Also, about Virus life outside the host; it IS different for all viruses, as you said, but some can even last years, living in fresh water or on dust particles. It really depends on the protein coat; ones with a genetic membrane usually survive the longest.

Dear HaMaDa2700, Thanks for your comment. We listened to the video again to be sure, but "They can also infect new organisms" is correct. It explains that viruses are capable of infecting another organism, for example another human, after they have infected the first organism. Viruses travel from one host to the next. Depends on the bacteria you're infected with. They only turn lethal after an accidental metabolic jump, aka a 'mutation', where the genetic code is altered after reproduction. Killing the host is counter-productive, so why would they aim to kill you? Basically, lethal bacteria, and most diseases in general, are completely accidental. So if you get bacteria in your water, it could be beneficial, not affect you at all, partly harmful, or lethal.

...Are you sure that viruses die only minutes after leaving the host? I have heard that some viruses, such as norovirus (one of my topmost fears) will live for weeks or even months after being expelled from a host, surviving extreme temperatures and waiting, always, to infect someone else. If such viruses truly died so quickly, my life would be a lot less stressful!

Depends on the kind of virus. Some viruses are "naked", just a protein shell and are very hardy, others have an envelope around them and are very sensitive. Rhinovirus for example can survive for weeks, Hep C can survive for a long time. Like the other comments, Ebola or HIV die very quickly when placed on surfaces.
