Michael Jackson hit a new creative peak with Bad. He was different going into this project as the media was starting to turn on him. Thriller gets all the love, but every single from this album was a banger too. In my opinion, this is his best album because it has edge and attitude. It's actually more 'iconic' and representational of the lasting image you associate with Michael. So much of the sound is him really moulding his idiosyncratic sound. All the hee hees and ad libs, the harder edge vocals etc. that are inextricable from his style. It's actually a more complete album in my opinion and that's saying something given how commercial he became and how intense the marketing was. The amount of scrutiny over his looks was just evil, he looked his sexiest during this era anyway! Poor guy covered a lot of terrain that no one had covered before. He had a target on his back the day he bought the Beatle's catalogue.

You do realize that Bad was only successful on the charts because Thriller propelled Michael Jackson to superstardom. Thriller made him a cemented icon. "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" and "The Way You Make Me Feel" are nowhere near #1 quality singles, but yet they ended up there due to his clout and years in exile. "Human Nature", "Thriller" and "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" are far more exceptional records, yet they never landed in the Top 3. Everything needs context. The only mediocre song on Thriller is "The Girl Is Mine", yet "Bad" has multiple mediocre tracks. "Speed Demon", Just Good Friends", "Leave Me Alone" and "The Way You Make Me Feel". What saved these songs were the music videos. Not the actual songs.

No wonder it wasn´t released as a single. It´s still an OK song, but not good enough, otherwise it surely would had been the lead single or so.

80s baby here! I became a fan with the release of Bad. I remember my Target store had literally piles of Bad albums and tapes. It had a cardboard cutout of MJ too. I got to experience that MJ mania. The thrill of a new video being released. I saw Moonwalker in the cinema. I remember the release of his book Moonwalk and the book display stand at the bookstore. I remember MJ magazines at the newsgent and MJ merchandise. What was cool about the era is that watching video shows for the latest MJ videos caused me to fall in love with other late 80s music. Such a great era.

The combo of my youthful age, and his personality created this..once in a lifetime experience. Also, it really was a collaboration-I love the input of Scorsese, Quincy, etc..we extol Micheal but the ppl around him made it complete. What a time.

Specially when done live during the Dangerous Tour, because people used to think it was a product of special effects or camera tricks in the video. And I always thought it'd been much cooler if only Michael did it in both the Video and on Tour, people would've thought he had actual superpowers back then. Oh well... he did have superpowers. The album sales say otherwise, the numbers don't lie. Bad had Glee written all over it and alot fans didn't really buy into Michael's new look or persona, clearly. Instead of topping the $60m+ sales of Thriller, Bad barely did half that amount, so Michael clearly put off alot more fans than he intended to add. The whole thing stank of "try hard" to me and he came off worse for doing so. Michael looked the opposite of someone you should be intimidated by, the Tyson line you refer to as badass in a big girly curly perm wasn't going to change that. Didn't look bad ass at all, Michael was never masculine looking (could have been if he'd left his face alone), but whatever he did to his looks had now made him androgynous, if not feminine looking. Off The Wall was his best period musically as a solo artist, Thriller was his best commercial period in terms of all the teams/tools/look/promotion required to launch someone into superstardom. The great thing was that even though Michael had some work done on his face, he still at least looked recognisable as the little kid who broke onto the Motown scene. Billie Jean at Motown 25 made Michael Jackson, THAT was Michael at the peak of his powers, that was the launchpad for Thriller. No coincidence Quincy wasn't feeling Bad and parted ways and Michael's life kinda went downhill from that moment onwards, he never ever recaptured the success of Thriller, let alone beat it. Bad by Michael's own high standards, was a flop.

The Jacksons all hold a special place in my heart. My great-grandmother lived on Jackson St. in Gary while they were living there. I had several uncles and cousins that worked at the Big Mill, AKA US Steel in Gary with Joe, and several cousins who were in the same classes as the Jackson siblings. They were long gone by the time I was born, but I remember going to 2300 Jackson St. WELL BEFORE it was an actual tourist spot. I was awed by the fact 11 people could even fit in the house at once, let alone live there. It's so small! So being from the area (I was born in the neighboring city of East Chicago) I felt a connection to Michael beyond music. When Bad came out, we were at the store the day it was released and bought the record and cassette tape. My uncle's a DJ and the record was for him while the cassette was for the car. We popped it in as soon as we got in, and I was hooked!!! And Dirty Diana was my favorite of the whole album! Finding out it was a favorite of Princess Diana was the icing on the cake! I was drawn to her as a child, so us having the same favorite song was cool to me, too. I was 7. Give me a break!🤣🤣🤣 But the video for Smooth Criminal was EPIC!!! We recorded the long version and I watched it so much the tape broke in the VCR, but my uncle was an electronic wiz kid and fixed it so well you couldn't even tell it was previously broken. I still have it and watch it every now and then when I'm feeling nostalgic. 🙂🙂🙂 Overall, Bad is my favorite album by MJ ever! And I enjoyed reliving the memories of my childhood associated with it. MJ's music really is the soundtrack of my childhood for sure. I'm glad I got to experience it in real time. Those were the days!

The album sales say otherwise. Bad had Glee written all over it and alot fans didn't really buy into Michael's new look or persona, clearly. Instead of topping the $60m+ sales of Thriller, Bad barely did half that amount, so Michael clearly put off alot more fans than he did gain them. The whole thing stank of "try hard" to me and he came off worse for doing so. Michael looked the opposite of someone you should be intimidated by. Off The Wall was his best period musically as a solo artist, Thriller was his best commercial period in terms of all the teams/tools/look/promotion required to launch someone into superstardom. No coincidence Quincy wasn't feeling Bad and parted ways and Michael's life kinda went downhill from that moment onwards, he never ever recaptured the success of Thriller, let alone beat it. Bad by Michael's own high standards, was a flop.
@matrix2297
@matrix2297 2 жыл бұрын
@@Longlostpuss 30 million sales is still a lot but Michael wanted to TOP Thriller. Was never gonna happen. I do feel like Michael was sabotaged a little with this album. BAD was the wrong title period. Smooth Criminal would have been much better, and a sleek photo of him on the front in one of his signature poses. By that time his style was more established. He looked awkward and like he wasn't sure of himself. They also lightened his skin a lot in the photo which he shouldn't have co-signed. Michael had many people in his ear when it came to rebranding etc. and he had spent so much time out of the spotlight he was likely worried about public perception and listened to the wrong people. He became preoccupied with being the showman and it reflected in his music. Regardless, like many things in retrospect, BAD is a very good album. While the 'BAD' image may have been unbelievable for some, we all know behind the scenes Michael was a gangsta and that's why he had a target on his back. And as the initial comment stated, the actual era itself is totally iconic and it terms of his stage success, his Wembley performance and first solo global tour etc. these songs and this image is what is cemented in people's minds. A lot of the marketing was successful and continued to gain a lot of young fans (don't say it lol) and appealing to the youth was of key importance to him when it came to relevance and longevity.

@@matrix2297 Bad was an awful album title, the look was awful, the sound was all over the place (in terms of musical direction), the marketing was plain awful. Michael had, largely, become almost unrecognisable by that point, and not for the better. If I'm being completely honest (this is as children at the time watching it unfold), we all thought the whole promo looked very powderpuff, when than was apparently the opposite of the message Michael was supposedly trying to convey. In hindsight, It looked to me like Michael (or his interests) was purposely targeting the gay demographic in an attempt to garner the additional fans he or they thought were necessary to top Thriller, and if that's the case, it backfired tremendously. He took a massive gamble there and it didn't pay off - how much of that was actually his idea I don't know. One thing I thought was interesting, is that in one of the detail vids, Michael complained about that jump suit being too tight to deliver the dance routines the directors wanted during the Speed Demon dancing scene in Moonwalker- would Michael personally pick an outfit that stifled his creativity? ESPECIALLY his dancing???? Michael came off as anything but Bad, he looked more meek and timid than he ever did when he broke onto the Motown scene at a mere12 years old. Michael always looked more grown up to me in his authentic younger days than he did a grown up, but anyway, I digress. The irony is, after Motown 25 and Thriller, MJ probably already had the support of the gay community and pretty much every demographic out there anyway. So to have only made half the album sales of Thriller (if that), Michael must have lost an AWFUL LOT of fans, especially considering that dubbing was a big part of black music culture, so the majority of album sales actually came from non blacks. The rabbit hole probably goes deeper than you think here, it wasn't just the black vote Michael lost during Bad. Sabotage? I'm so sure about that, I don't think the Carpenters were better than Michael that year, I think he should have got at least one Grammy, but at the same time, the album was simply no where near good enough for me when talking about Michael Jackson standards, so I wasn't surprised at the same time, just by who actually won it. At the same time, that was the first solo album MJ produced since Motown with no Quincy involvement. I was the biggest fan of earlier days Michael, but the evidence is mounting that alot of his success may have been in no small part due down to the right people managing him, because his best work was under his father and Quincy - after leaving those two, it took Rodney Jerkins to start steering Michael back on the right track, but by then it was too late, even though Invincible was probably his last really good album to me since Off The Wall and Thriller. As for the Bad Tour, I think it only did as well as it did because Michael did not technically do a Thriller tour around the time of the album's success, he was committed to the Victory Tour, so the demand for Michael's solo tour had already been pent up for a good 3 or so years. I don't think it's necessarily because of the Bad material itself. The biggest crowd pops were actually from his classic Thriller titles anyway when you watch the concerts back. Just my two cents.

I've always respected, admired & loved MJ. Not only for his many, other-worldly musical, writing, choreography skills etc. But for his tireless humanitarian work, & his tireless work to spread the message that we are destroying our species very own habitat.....our planet Earth. 🌎 💔 🌎 All while he battled autoimmune symptoms of Lupus & Vitiligo. I was an 80's girl, class of '88 & feel SO BLESSED to have lived to watch MJ throughout his Jackson 5 days. Then him literally bursting onto the MTV scene with his new solo career, & Billie Jean video. We'd never seen ANYTHING like him before. And it. Was. Purely. Magical! 🌟 🏆 🌟 ❤️ 👑 I have a rare, serious autoimmune disease myself that's become terminal possibly sooner than later. In & out of Hospice. It's so freaking hard to accept. But at my age of 52 now, MJ STILL inspires me daily to keep moving, to persevere through the many moments of intense pain. To keep trying my best. As a long-time professional ballerina years ago, trained from age four progressing to a professional ballet company in pre-teen & later teens (as well as jazz & modern dance) - the choreography alone he created BLOWS MY MIND. This man created it on his own....save collaborating with Quincy Jones & a couple others in choreography for Thriller. This man was an absolute enigma, a genius! I love, love LOVE watching his face in "behind the scenes" footages of MJ creating & practicing. His eyes are ALWAYS laser-focused in these moments. You can see the wheels spinning 100 moh in his mind with ideas. Then becoming laser-focused on whichever task at hand. He has always inspired me so much, & always will. That said, my all-time favorite looks on him were in the "Bad" video & the "Black or White" video. Absolute swoooooooon!! We love you MJ. We miss you always MJ. Fly high & soar proud sweet King, till we all meet again. 🕊 ✝️ 💃 👑 🕊

Bad is an unique work of art for its era and for all time. Separating the songs from the man and whatever was going on in those years, they stand the test of time. Looking at them in the context of those times, they take on added meaning and historial relevance. Michael Jackson's persona and life story are crucial to his art, and need to be recognized and celebrated. From a purely artistic standpoint, this is among his best work and will never get old or lose its relevance. I can listen and watch over and over!
