Scientists have recently discovered that a small, particular crustacean species can pollinate red seaweed underwater. They speculate that sea-life pollination might have “evolved” before land-life pollination. In this episode of Answers News, our hosts Kaia Kloster, Tim Chaffey, and Patricia Engler share their perspectives on the matter as Bible-believing Christians.

Was expecting SkepTick to be a circle, but good to see Lisa the Rainbow Giraffe (LBUH). Oh, but, I have a doctorate in physiology, with a focus on inherited cardiovascular diseases, so... I'm bloody well going to talk about evolution! Yes, binary fission is *a* form of asexual reproduction, but there are others. One of which, common in bacteria, is conjugation, which is a kind of proto-sexual reproduction in that two individuals exchange and combine genetic material. True sexual reproduction will only happen in multicellular organs where you end up with specialised haploid sex cells, and then, of these, one is bigger and immobile while the other is smaller and motile. Why would evolution do this? The question is malformed as evolution has no intent, but if we rephrase this as "why would this be a successful evolutionary occurrence?" then the answer is, because of the increased opportunities for variation, you will find more variants using this strategy. Also without it, life would be stuck at a single-celled level.

I'm no scientist. But I have heard that sexual reproduction increases genetic diversity better than asexual reproduction due to mixing the DNA of 2 individuals. All their offspring will me more different from each of their parent than if the process used asexual reproduction.

That was my first thought when they asked about sexual reproduction (the increased variety). Asexual reproduction only really works for very simple life, as we can easily see by examining the emergence of sexual reproduction as complexity increases.

As I'm given to understand it, asexual reproduction is much slower at generating and spreading mutations in general when compared to sexual reproduction, as asexual reproduction is essentially self-generating clones of one cell line, and any major changes in selection pressures that it hasn't generated an adaptation for is likely to kill the entire species unless it was lucky and one of the more recent mutations in that one line developed an adaptation sufficient to let it survive and spread its genes. Meanwhile, sexual selection basically supercharges the evolutionary process because it involves the presence of many compatible, but significantly different, cell lines each independently generating mutations and experiencing selection pressures, then producing future generations by recombining the DNA of those who thrived (sufficiently) in those environments.

The reason why sexual reproduction even came about was because sexual reproduction allows for the greater diversification of genetic material. Asexual reproduction is basically a replication of a creature's own genes, whereas sexual reproduction allows for the mixing of genes between 2 creatures, and it can be repeated with different partners too. Greater diversification of genetic material, better chances of adaptability which is essential for survival. Which is a mechanism of natural selection. They of course completely misrepresent evolution when talking about how could the bees evolve along with the flowers at the same time by thinking that evolution is some sort of linear process across species. The simple explanation is that plants slowly evolved their means for pollination with regards to their surroundings and what's available to them. With the onset of animals eating plants, certain plants began to evolve ways for these same animals to eat something they produce in order to facilitate both pollination and the spreading of seeds. Before any of that, plants had to make use of more natural and less accurate forms of pollination, by wind or water (for seeds), and some even developed jet propulsion for spreading their seeds. The transphobia I don't even want to touch, needless to say, the actual scientific discussion on gender doesn't agree with their view (yes, their view, which is the same as their God's view, funny that). Want to see some REAL attempts at redefining language? Try how the right have tried to redefine fascism as pretty much anything they want to hate on, communism being one of them. It's ironic because they do this while displaying their own fascist tendencies very proudly indeed. 20:20 This is fearmongering pure and simple. It's not like trans people just "choose to be whatever gender" one day and do it simply to invade the spaces of the opposite (biologically) gendered people, but that's exactly how the homophobes and transphobes put it. It's the same thing as when they describe abortion as actually killing a baby (and even going as far as to say that abortion is the killing of already successfully delivered babies. Yes, the FarQ politicians have done this over and over) instead of the removal of a fetus, and then they lie about how late term abortions are very common (it's not, but early abortions don't generate the same macabre images they want), how abortions aren't healthcare because it simply isn't (which flies in the face of the very nature of pregnancies), and so on. Truth is not what they are interested in when they do this. it's all about pushing their agenda. 29:19 Like you guys have. You do realize that "design proponent" didn't exist before and was all "creationism" right? We even had a transitional form, "cdesign proponetist"! 32:02 People of color by and large are still a minority 34:15 Persecution complex! Sorry Tim, the country you are in is not a Judeo Christian country, and it never has been. You guys worry about the tearing down of a culture that, by far, is something that we should NOT see implemented at all! 35:57 Compared to their alternative/objective, which is a Christian Theocracy (and make no mistake, they've taken legit steps towards that, the recent overturning of Roe V Wade is undeniable proof), I'd take a Marxist state.,

I think if they learnt the first thing about reproduction they wouldn't pose such silly ideas. Plants and have many ways to spreading their seeds, and of getting those seeds fertilized prior to spreading them. Targeted is more efficient on resources than squirt and hope. A seed that gets swallowed and then dumped in a nice pile of fertilizer is getting a better start than one that blows in the wind and lands randomly.

I'm so disappointed by the atheist community recently. We're supposed to be the intellectually consistent, rigorous, honest side. The side of "good ideas needn't fear scrutiny." But here we are saying "males don't have a significant advantage in sports over females and if you disagree then you're a bigot. No discussion" We call out creationists for ignoring reality to fit their beliefs, but then we have these two here saying (as though it's just obviously true) that males who simply self identify as women do not have a physical advantage that is relevant to sports over females. And that is just demonstrably false, it's so incredibly easy to see and show how that is false. And then we have Emma saying "what? Men? Dangerous to women? That's ridiculous" as though that hasn't been a large portion of the feminist movement for the last decade. As though "yes, ALL men" was never a thing. Honestly I've got no idea what is going on but it's got me very suspicious that y'all might be bevaving this way because if you behaved honestly, this stuff would just crumble. Very disappointing Oh, and no, tennis isn't gender segregated because of men's egos. Remember when the Williams sisters bet they could beat any man out of the top 200? Yeah they got beaten by the mens 201 seed after he'd played a round of golf and had a couple of beers that morning. And the cycling thing? She kept up for the first stint but had exhausted herself too much to keep up with the for any significant amount of time. Do you REALLY think that in this day and age ANYONE would stand for "uh, back of the line you! Winning is for MEN"?! I running, boys on college teams routinely beat the fastest world record holding women's times. This is just the truth. Why are we ignoring reality in favour of our beliefs? That's what THEY do, not us.

In an otherwise great video, you are thinking about competitive sports like you and I would do, and that is a total disregard for sports and a big concern for other issues. Professional sports are the reason to live for some people. They are also the way in which they earn a living. And the classification of people into categories makes living off sports possible for the majority of sportspeople. Can you imagine a world in which only the Grand Masters are able to put food on the table by playing chess? Where only people who look like Mike Tyson can box? Where only Ferrari wins Formula 1 competitions, with the pilots that they decide to put in their cars? Where almost all women are biologically incapable of competing at more than a local level in every sport where strength is important? That is the world in which there are no categories of protected groups of talented but somehow weak (in just one aspect) sportspeople. Categories are messy and unjust. People want to be in the category where they can win even at the expense of better players. And even the definition of a "better player" is a complete mess. And sex-related advantages are just one of the myriad issues that make a classification in sports so messy. But someone has to make rules that balance access to sports and justice in a way that is better than no classifications at all and one class for each individual athlete. And yes, this means that we should stop talking about "men's sports" and "women's sports", and start talking about the "unprotected category", where everybody can compete, and the "protected category" where only typical women can compete. It would be unfair, but everything is unfair.
@Hurricayne92
@Hurricayne92 2 жыл бұрын
In particular regards to your comments on F1, have you seen recent races? I can assure you Ferrari no longer dominates the field now that rules restrict expenditure. Its now much more reliant on drive skill and a Red Bull driver is completely dominating the championship.
@andresvillarreal9271
@andresvillarreal9271 2 жыл бұрын
@@Hurricayne92 That is exactly what I am saying. When Ferrari was outspending everyone else, Formula 1 was more a battle of the wallets than a sport. I have long since stopped following Formula 1, so I don't know how successful the rules to restrict spending have been. You can say that the rules restricting Formula 1 are ridiculous and whimsy, but they have kept the category alive. You can also say that the testosterone rules for most sports are ridiculous and whimsy, but having no such rules would mean that only the athletes who fill their bodies with testosterone will become world-class competitors. And I know that I have no good solution for the fact that some women athletes are exceptional because of their testosterone levels, but I am conscious that there is a problem and that we have to find a solution.

The arbiters of a sport cannot and should not ask if a trans woman is really a trans woman or a man trying to win a competition. If the rules say that a competitor has to be below certain levels of certain hormones to compete in a certain category, the rules must be applied. Trans women can compete in the men's category or comply with the rules and only compete in the women's category when the hormone levels meet the rules. We should not call the protected category the "women's" category and we should not ask whether a person wanting to compete in the protected category is a man, a woman, a trans, and intersex, or anything else about their private life. But in the absence of a level playing field where a typical but talented woman can compete and sometimes win against a typical but talented man, there has to be a solution.

Writing "-'nt of" instead of "-'nt've" is a common spelling mistake, which originates from the fact that English spelling is effectively antiphonetic. Which makes sense, when you factor in things that hormone therapy CAN'T affect, like bone structure or height. Incidentally, that same study demonstrated that trans MEN performed better than cis men in terms of things like push ups and sit ups, as well as the sprint speed iirc. My point is basically that the united states needs to exclusively hire trans men and fund their transitions in order to create an unstoppable force of super soldiers

The fact that sexual reproduction emerged from what was previously purely an asexual form of reproduction is a huge banner of support for the truth of evolution. If the reproduction of life had remained purely asexual, there would have been very little in the way of genetic change and life would have most certainly gone extinct before asexual reproduction could have produced a large enough diversity of life to be able to survive the various and extremely different climate and ecological systems the Earth shows evidence of going through. The emergence of such a complex form and energy inefficient process of reproduction speaks volumes against intelligent design and for a natural unguided process, as intelligent design would impart an effort for simplification whenever and wherever possible, and moreover would try to strive for the most feasibly efficient means of reaching an intended goal. Unguided natural processes on the otherhand make no such efforts as they makes no efforts of any kind. Under unguided natural processes, systems and structures emerge as a result of available materials and existing conditions, and most often these systems and structures emerge as an addition to or repurposing of a previously established system and/or structure, and these addition and/or repurposing results in more complexity and even convolutions that eventually will lead to an unnecessary amount of required complexity for the continued effective and functional utilization of the system and/or structure. For example, after the emergence of sexual reproduction came the emergence of gestational development and how more complex and complicated the process of sexual reproduction and gestational development became as the systems were added to and repurposed as the various species emerged through the genetic diversification of life, to the point where placental mammals literally requires that presence of a strain of retrovirus on the female's uterus, and that this retrovirus actually infect the zygote in order for a pregnancy to occur, without it the fertilized egg would just pass on through like all other periods and the female would never get pregnant. This is a somewhat recent discovery, a couple of decades now, but this knowledge is what lead to the development of the 'Plan B' or 'morning after' contraceptive pills, the pills contain a chemical concoction that 'knocks out' the retrovirus putting it in a temporary state of inactivity to prevent the retrovirus from interacting with and infecting the possibly fertilized egg as it passes through the uterus in order to prevent an unwanted potential pregnancy. Interesting how if life was intelligently designed, that it shows almost none of the expected typical hallmarks of having been designed, yet shows nearly all of the typical hallmarks that would be expected if life was the result of unguided natural processes, like the emergence of sexual reproduction among the forms of life that also happen to have the greatest amount of diversification.

Asexual reproduction does not have flexibility, essentially offspring are clones, and because their genes are not regularly mixed up (there are some species that have mutated asexual female only reproduction from sexual reproduction.) However, evolution in asexual species would have to be very slow, because the occasional benign mutation wouldn't spread laterally. Sexual reproduction provides selective advantage because mutations and genetic variation can be readily spread to offspring by sex. That's likely why most animals and plant species do use sexual reproduction.

A lot of us put our marbles in the sexual reproduction bin because it introduces far more genetic diversity. This means your population will be able to adapt to change much faster than the one that only reproduces asexually. Some critters (like snails) put their marbles in *both* buckets. So when everything is fine, populations are stable, and there isn't much change, they will reproduce asexually. When changes happen and they start to see drops in population, they reproduce sexually (for the benefits mentioned above).

The sexual reproduction evolved, because exchanging genetic material with other individuals suffles the genetic material and spreads beneficial mutations around in the population. Two sexes are better than one, because that prevents the individual from self fertilisation, and means the reproductive sells and sexes can adapt to doing different things in the reproduction better (e.g. the eggs have energy recerve and the sperm can move effectively). Two is most common because it's the minimal solution after one, but some animals have even dozens of different sexes, or only one.
