One big problem with this is that you didn’t let them evolve enough. It took mine 40generations 10 seconds each to get them to not fall. Took me 500 generations to get them to climb. Took me 1500 generations to climb fast and almost never fall.

For me. 10-50 per gen. 50-100-150-200 Gens until no improvement. 5 TO 15 seconds, play with it a bit. Look at the efficiency stat or just the STATS IN GENERAL! All of that is in the 'best in' generation box if you click it. It shows the best of each past generation and shows stats too. Also, add an arm like thing to pull it forward/up.

Yesterday I decided "Hmm, wonder how fast a swastika would go? With the right muscles I'm sure it could be pretty fast..." I took a shower and came back around gen 100-110, the fitness was roughly around 65-70% So, TIL that the Nazi's were genetically modified to retreat ;)

I couldn't see the first design ever getting close to climbing. Evolve has a fairly competent physics engine, and as soon as any of those legs grab a stair, and with a body so fat it will simply spin he body anticlockwise.... The first design set had no chance of climbing. Your caterpillar design also needs another triangle at the front, and muscles permitting each leg to move in the opposite direction, otherwise theegs cannot lift only push down. The muscles in the game do return to their starting possition when relaxed, but they do so slowly and with exponentially less strength the closer the get to their start possition. They need an opposite in pairs.

U need to put muscles on both sides of the leg I think so the muscle can pull the leg in the direction it needs to go like we have bicep and triceps they do different things bicep pulls it towards your body triceps allows your arm to move away

The muscles in this simulator can both expand and contract, so you don't need to worry about that. You're right that this isn't how it works in real life but I figured since you would probably want to have muscle pairs all the time anyway, it would be much easier for everyone involved if I just combined that functionality into a single muscle.

Samuel Sims the humongous amount of legs led to prevention of climbing. If the legs had knees it would be able to bend the legs preventing it from climbing and extend when it needs them..

you need muscles between each leg in front to lift the leg up to the next step. You also need muscles between the backbones to give it support to prevent it from folding up on it's tail.

Your box climber idea might have worked if you had given each leg a knee joint and if you had started the whole thing rotated 45 degrees so that it doesn't start with one side on the ground and the other side waiting to fall. Stiff limbs aren't good for walking, because they don't leave much of a way to lift one off the ground and swing it past another.

OK if you need help on the climber I have finally made one. It looks very similar to the spider. It has a relatively good sized triangle for the body. Just a empty triangle three bones and three joints. It has a joint above and to the side of the bottom joints of the triangle. Of course with bones. Next place joints about 3-4 spaces below the knees. and muscles connecting the top of each leg to the triangle. Next a muscle connecting both parts of the leg together, and last a muscle connecting the lower part of the leg to the other leg. Straight across. It will then proceed to jump climb

Make a head that can move up and down. That way it can thrust the head downwards and get a slight grip. Also the segments need more compact. It should be 2×2, not 2×3. Do that and it might work.

You ever think about what it’d be like to climb stairs withought knees? Bet it’d be hard. I get that putting knees on this creature isn’t an option. So what’s the other option? To bunny hop! Try putting a sort of tail thing on the upper back of your creature big enough so that it swinging upwards brings the entire back up, but not the entire front. The spine has to be a little more flexible for this so try splitting the spine into two or three segments. Also make sure to even out the center of mass a bit with a head of sorts so that you don’t fall backwards immediately. I have yet to actually try out this game so I am unable to test this out myself but I have some faith in this idea.
