In regards to the shower, I live in Namibia, so a generally warm environment. However, winters are extra frosty. My solution has been to put a shower curtain up on the bar supporting the shower door/wall to the opposite wall, just for the winter. The curtain clips on and off so easily, it isn't a hassle to quickly remove it if I have guests coming by. My tush stays warm and my bathroom remains beautiful. I hope this helps someone out there who loves their single door shower as much as I love mine. ❤️

This was so useful, just a great help. I live in the Middle East, we put sliding glass doors in our bathrooms, sealed at the bottom, but one thing that is different is that we also put drains under or near the sinks too so that the bathroom can be cleaned with a water sprayer-like a water hose- and also the water from the shower doesn't damage anything, so, 2 drains in the bathroom, we also do this in the kitchen. And, For artwork in the bathrooms, I have 2 "gileem" hand-made small carpets I framed with glass, on the walls. Everyone who visits our bathroom and powder room comments on them. I also have an acrylic framed pic of my pup in my powder room. Really, an interesting bath/powder room makes for interesting conversations between cultures and leads to change sometimes. Congrats! on Wayfair and hgtv .

Never heard of a pipe vanity, but hate pedestal sinks. We had one in our upstairs half bathroom when we downsized. Bought a real vanity in the first 2 months. On sale half price with a marble torti counter and Canadian hardwood. Floor model. Bought copper taps for it. Still love it 4 years later. Finally change the rest of the bathroom to fit it.

You had me at bathroom storage!! Our primary bedroom bathroom has a separate shower stall and large soaker tub. I wish the tub was not there to be honest, because it's not environmentally friendly to fill it, and since we don't use it, it's basically a huge dust magnet! I would love to rip out the tub and put out floor to ceiling storage instead!!
@normagoff1916 Жыл бұрын
Great topic. Looks don’t always mean functionality. The open shower calls for serious water proofing everything due to stem escaping, even the wood vanity. They’re more practical if only tile materials surround them. Since you’re on the shower door subject, another thing for contractors to miss is the slope of the shower floor. There needs to be a slight downward placement so that water doesn’t just sit on the floor.

Congratulations on your episodes! So true about the pipe vanities. Ours leaves almost no room to even place a toothbrush. The bathroom is so narrow that customer service at our flooring store told us there was no way the flooring we were buying was the right measurements that they kindly gave us more at no extra charge because they thought for sure we were wrong. We were right but so kind of them and also funny 😆. So, the pipe sink stays because it makes the restroom look slightly more spacious.

OMG THANK YOU for calling out the "cold bum" showers, as I call them. I hated them when I lived in the UK where they are ubiquitous. Water leaks out, bums go cold, and the entire thing is a very bad idea. All that escaped water is a huge slip and fall risk when getting out of the shower.

Hi Kiva I had to demolish and renovate two bathrooms. They were very old. There were so many things to think about. Designing my shower was very hard bc I have a slanted wall. Bit I was able to deepen tha slope and gained a little room but not standing room. The shower doors were a big concern. I opted for a double by pass sliding glass door for optimal flexibility in entry and turning on the faucets. It was an expensive door but necessary bc the bathroom is above an unheated den. It can get cold but not freezing in that room. I put loads of drawers cabinets and niches in the shower and the room. Women have a lot of toiletries and I store cleaning products in there and extra paper towels and toilet paper and tissue boxes. I have two garbage cans one for recycle and one for everything else. Also I keep underwear and bras in there. The childrens bathroom has two long niches on the shower tub combo. I use a curtain not glass doors on a tub. And a hotel rack or train rack in the shower. Most of my design came from studying hotel rooms. It took a long time for me to design the bathrooms but I am glad I did what you recommended in this video. I have a heated floor which is a waste of money bc I use rugs near the shower. Also make sure you put in vents even if you have windows ! And put in a hardwired make up lighted magnifying mirror! Thank you😊 look forward to the wayfair show!

Congrats on the great Wayfair show! Btw, the majority of showers (not tub/shower combos) in the US probably have a single shower door. Builders stop it!!

Great Tips. the current iteration of our bath is a frameless glass box with a large window for natural light, the window sill continues on as a shelf into the shower and into the bathroom over the sink and commode. on that shelf from left to right is a Martin clock in bronze colours, two cube bottles of room stink, 3 stone carvings a bear a walrus and a seal, then the medicine cabinet and glass wall for shower. opposite the medicine cabinet is a tall cabinet set into the wall for other necessities, I"m lucky, I don't have the makeup and skin routine you refer to, but there are other needs that need putting away. My bath is only 5 X 8 feet, so storage is a premium and only the most needed necessities are kept in there, towels and rugs have their place in the linen closet. the walls are all dark taupe tile with dark maroon tile floors that look brown, great colour shift. my small square sink doesn't have a drain cover, it has a slit in the front of the bowl for draining. it's a rinsing sink, no soaking in that bathroom sink. we use a spray hose and have a teak bench in the shower since we don't have a tub rim anymore. it's fun hearing what we've done in our home already coming from a professional designer, it's affirmation and confirmation that we've done good. Bigg Huggs !!! We Love Your CHannel !

I love open showers, they are way more easy to clean + you don't get the freezing effect that you have when you open the shower doors. If you have a open shower you are a bit less warm while showering but when you get outside it's not a thermal shock. So i'd say try both to see what you like the most before getting one or the other.

I think a pipe vanity is fine in an alcove, where you CAN tuck storage underneath where no one can see it. Also it's much easier to address leaks and keep clean than closed storage, which collects grime inside the cabinet.

Good ideas. So. Is the art piece in my bathroom that is behind glass going to get ruined?? Recently, I overhauled my powder room (actually both bathrooms). The pedestal sink was replaced by a sink and vanity with closed storage space and medicine cabinets replaced both builder-grade mirrors. An entire cabinet in the kitchen was freed up with that change. Medicines and toiletries really didn't need to go in the kitchen. BUT I still want a shower with no door. I want one where it is tucked back in the corner with tile walls on three sides and not a really big opening so it won't be cold. I just saw this on a house tour video this morning.

I absolutely love my open shower, it has a rainhead shower. It's always toasty warm. I have never had a drop of water leak out under or around the door. The door has a nice sweep on the bottom We used a very reputable shower glass company, maybe that's why you have had issues. We have had the single shower door for almost 4 years now (very easy to clean) It also make the bathroom appear bigger. We are actually having another one installed this Thursday in the master bath. I do love your videos Kiva!
@jandobson54412 жыл бұрын
That makes sense, Dorie. I’d wondered why I haven’t really found my open shower to be cold (and it’s winter here). We also have a rain shower. I’m also wondering why, if doing a reno/building, creating a warmer environment hasn’t been considered. Underfloor heating, heated towel rails, vented heating, Tastic, small heater - all good options. We have none of those but designed our house so that if the door is left open our bathrooms don’t become ice boxes. Important to discuss the pros and cons of any design but also important not to, ahem, throw the baby out with the bath water, either

The shower isn’t large enough if you’re getting cold in an open shower.water shouldn’t spray or leak out.that’s a serious design issue. The tray has to be on a slightly higher slope than a typical shower and many installers or home diy don’t know that. But it’s a real thing.
@Person-mh6xq2 жыл бұрын
Except there are limitations on size for many showers. It absolutely does get cold in there. Also, water does bounce off the body and it does, indeed, spray out. Leaking out is its own issue but the other things almost consistently happen.

I'm going to say very confidently that if you're having those issues with an open shower door setup then your shower was done improperly. There is nothing wrong with an open shower door as long as it's setup and used how it was intended with proper accessories. My typical analogy I use for my clients who call me to rip it out is I would ask, would you take your convertible sports car off-roading? The say no and I then say is the problem the convertible car? or the convertible car being used improperly, or even better yet maybe the convertible is ok but we need to lift it up with a softer suspension, put bigger tires on, and make the interior easier to maintain and water resistant. They agree and then I hit them with looks like you needed a convertible this entire time but it just needed to be a jeep lol.
@AnHeC2 жыл бұрын
No. Just no. She is right. It's cold. Now sure, you can waste money heating up the entire bathroom but I prefer a closed shower. The water does spill because it's... water... Unless you have a massive bathroom. Lol. I don't have enough space for this. Open showers no matter how well you install them just suck for most people.
