#stoptinytales Those horrible Tiny Tales cages should be discontinued. There made with cheap plastic.
@MunchiesPlace5 жыл бұрын
I think Petsmart only did this move to get out of their 8mil debt. Kaytee crittertrails dominate the US market for small animals compared to places like the UK and Germany who shame Kaytee for making them, but crittertrail sales they must have monitored and thought they could copy and profit on. Which is a great marketing scheme on their part but it's sad because it's 2018 and we are still using 80's and 90's style enclosures when there is acrylic wooden enclosures out there that mimic tanks/glass and are very suitable for gerbils, mice and hamsters with the appropriate size and space. No one is thinking outside the box or ways to improve a failed design. :/

Also yeah, I grew up think8ng these tiny cages were just cozy for the critter inside, but her vids have really been opening my eyes to the reality of such small compartments. @@ytf2528 I'm not a rodent expert, so don't take my opinion for truth, but since the minimum requirement is 450 sq. in. I think you're probably good. If you currently can't afford a larger cage, then as long as you keep it away from direct sunlight, clean out the cage once in a while, refill water and food, have a few good props/toys, and a nice large wheel to accommodate for your type of rodent/s, you should be good😊 Also plenty of good quality time! Although they're a pet, they're also a companion, so nice quality time is a must! Hope this helps💖

I bought a mirror a better bowl a swing and a climbing toy. then a few days later ordered some more toys cuttlebone and treats online (will be here tomorrow) I had the cash on hand for that stuff but would have been about $25 short on a bigger cage.. (thats why Im ordering that as soon as my check comes) will also be getting some more toys and some perches a mineral block and 2 more bowls (to throw away the others) Is this a good cage size?? 30 x 18 x 18 in
@CornBeanSoup5 жыл бұрын
BeccaBearSc I would think so... I’ve got a pretty small cage for mine, but they have full access to go in and out, along with a corner of my room with a perch and lots of toys scattered on the dresser and hanging from the ceiling. They hardly ever spend any time in the cage, only to eat and sleep, so I never really bothered to upgrade it to a bigger cage that they would hardly use. As long as theres plenty more than just the cage, I think you’ll be fine. Ofcourse that all depends on the time they spend in it. If their like mine, slightly smaller cages are fine, but if they spend mass amounts of time in them, definitely go for bigger.

I say those crappy cages be good as a temporary set up,when it's time to clean out your hamsters main home,just get rid the pips and plat forms and just put one hide or something,for your hamsters to hide in,till it's time to put them back in their freshly clean home. Or just don't bother,and use a box to put them in while you clean out their home.

Only other use I see for them is if you get your kid a new hamster for a holiday and it's good for a presentation reveal- "Oh, I got a toy Castle- OH MY GOSH NEW HAMSTER FRIEND?!" and then immediately transfer to a proper set up. But the price tag on them kind of negates that use. Honestly if you want your hamster cage to look like something, use paper or cardboard, decorate it yourself and stick it to the outside of it on your own.

I find it funny that these are the types of cages people think are fine for hamsters but they are also the same cages that take a lifetime to clean and put together. Instead of just buying a proper cage that is not only good for the animal but easier to clean and open. Getting a big glass tank or bin that you can give the animal plenty of space and be able to take it out back, spray it down, do a little scrubbing, dry and set back up in less time than putting that monstrosity together. Funny how the ignorance sort of punish in a way

I bought a hamster yesterday and this is the exact cage that the store employee told me to buy and I naively listened to them (despite the fact that I should have known better as they had also led me astray when I was buying a home for my snake). It took both me and my roommate about 30 minutes to figure out how to get the lid to properly fit. That was the first warning sign for me that made me feel uneasy about it. This morning I woke up at around 5:30 am to see my hamster sitting on top of the cage. About ten minutes later I found this video and, needless to say, I was first in line at Lowe's at 6 am with a giant plastic bin that I immediately fixed up for the lil guy and then was first back at the petstore 2 hours later to return the crate.

I changed one persons views since their daughter wanted a 200g big boy Syrian hamster and he would not fit inside of their "Crittertrail" cage and tubes. I even held the tubes up to him and the parents were like "Oh god, no he's not going to fit". I'm so thankful i worked Christmas Eve and after Christmas Day. I had more people buying pets after than before but all i was hearing from the hamster and mice owners that day was "We are so glad we talked to you" "We are thankful to know about proper care" "We are going to spoil him/her rotten now, thank you for your help". Seriously the best feeling in the world to know you did good to help someone understand a hamster who cannot talk to you and tell you its needs. So blessed! But of course i've gotten those "Idc, its a rodent" people before and i just wanna throw them out of the store (If only i could) But we can only try to help others, we cannot change everyone.

Went to a pet shop today to browse cages for a dwarf hamster I want to get... and was pleasantly surprised at how many decently sized cages I found... I spotted at least three that could be a good alternative. (Though I may just end up ordering Skyline Barney online as it is cheaper :p ) My main gripe was seeing a cage I thought would be great for a small hamster...advertised as a rat-cage. Still ended up looking at some small ones too since I need a safe transport cage for a 14-hour train-ride. XD (Getting rescues from around here is pretty difficult, and even pet-shop hamsters are usually unhealthy hybrids imported from Sweden)

I'm more of a fish keeper myself (although I would like to possibly own a hamster in the future) but I can't thank you enough for making videos showing potential hamster owners why these kinds of products are terrible and recommendations for better environments. First time fish keepers have a similar problem, getting a tiny tank- or god forbid a bowl- for their betta or goldfish (the most common culprits) and not providing any sort of enrichment. Just because an animal is small, or doesn't have a very long lifespan, or isn't 'cute' doesn't mean it's any less deserving of a good life with proper care and a suitable environment.

My mum once said ‘well it’s ok to put them in a small cage because they’re small’. I sent her like ten videos about why it’s not ok and also explained to her myself now much they need space. Then I told her that making a hamster live in a small cage is like making her live in our bathroom.

Thanks for having this series and educating us! Prior to watching your videos I knew nothing about hamster care. I had hamsters as a kid in a tiny cage and now I feel horrible that I did. But now that Im more educated im confident in getting a hamster once again. I'm getting the Prevue 528 next month c:

Ah! I rescued a dwarf hammy around a year ago, and when I was buying new supplies for him around the time all these cages came out. I was listening to this family argue about what cage they wanted, and all the things/accessories and the expense, and I was like... my dear, dear friends... just go next door to pick up a cage to DIY it. Unfortunately my hamster passed away a couple of weeks ago, so he didn't have long to enjoy all of his new toys and tunnels, but :( I'm glad he could enjoy them for a little bit before passing on. And hopefully the family listened and will give their hammy a good life.

Thank you so much for making these videos. Before I started watching your videos I had no idea how misleading the packaging could be in pet stores. I personally only have cats and I'm not planning on getting a hamster. But I am hoping to get a snake and your videos taught me to do more research about that type of container to keep it in instead of trusting the box completely. Well, more in depth research on everything, more research than what I was planning to do. Thank you, thank you so much. You not only teach people but you also present it in a way that is easy to understand, at least to me. It also doesn't feel like I'm being patronized for not knowing. Thank you for reading all the way through this and dealing with any mistakes I made.

I don't have a hamster anymore but when I did I had a pretty small cage for it. Surprisingly my 8 y/o self thought that it wasn't big enough so I convinced my mum to buy another cage. Instead of throwing out the old one we put the new one (which was bigger) on the bottom and the smaller one on top and connected them by tubes (my hamster was fairly small). We tried to just use the newer cage but the hamster wasn't settling so we tried layering the cages and it worked. I'm not sure if it's unsafe but my hamster seemed to like it sooooooooo 🤔🤔

@MunchiesPlace5 жыл бұрын
Rats would do best in wired critter nation type cages with levels and hammocks. They do not do well in glass tanks. Their care is similar to that of ferrets where they need to be out of their enclosure for a few hours and then put back inside of a spacious leveled cage.

I wouldn't recommend glass for any animal other than fish, reptiles and amphibians. Wire is always best for mice, rats, hamsters etc. I do recommend high cages though, rather than wide one, so you can give the rat several levels which will make them exercise more and they can avoid one another more easily in case they have a fight!
