I bought a mint used one on reverb for $800 for the keyboard version, saved myself $200 off new, and for that price, it's totally worth it. I'm still in the learning phase with it, but the sounds that come out of it, are really insanely cool. The randomization and arp applications are very, very inspirational for creativity.

I'll never forget the day I was buying a Minilogue XD and the cashier kept telling Clerk: "Yo man you should get the hydrasynth it's better" Me: "But I want an analog synth" Clerk: "There is no difference dude" Me: "There kinda is also I don't like menus" Clerk: "It's more powerful" Me: "Yeah but I already have a good digital wavetable synth (Serum and Arturia Microfreak)" Clerk "It's way different" which in his defense is true Clerk: Look it's really good analog emulation Me: I already have enough VA I want a real analog Clerk: I can give you a 5% discount Me: no Clerk: ok I would later proceed to beg my parents to get me the minilogue for 2 hours. For the price, the Hydrasynth Explorer is quite amazing. Some people think it sounds a bit sterile, but I don't think that Glen and the ASM team were shooting for the perfect analog emulation. It's just a damn good and fairly priced digital polysynth with just about everything you need. A great first hardware synth to get you started. I guess the Arturia Minifreak would be the closest competitor, but I would probably pick the Hydrasynth Explorer myself.

So I dont know hoe to judge the hydrasynth, as my desktop synth is quite limited, but these guys did an instore live demo at detroit modular(synth store in detroit area). Kind of an afterhours thing, It was such a good experience that I hold this synth in high regard while not at all personally knowing its advantages or disadvantages.

Serum in real life is kinda how I see it. Wavetables, Different filters, Analog Emulation, Fx, Mod Matrix etc. I see how dawless jammers would enjoy having such a versatile piece of gear that can make a lot of sounds, but for me its a pass. I don't like menu diving and its just a hardware wavetable synth. Nothing too out of this world. Its a interesting concept but I already have enough VSTs that do the same thing (probably even better since less menus). Its not a bad synth but I personally don't find a use of it in my studio. if I start dawless jamming and stuff I might get the desktop version but I still have the microfreak and minilogue bonus digital engine.

From the area myself and love DM! Sad I missed their demo. Not much of a fan sadly of the synth itself, but it isn't a bad option for a lot of people I'd think.

@@Johanthegnarler I mean it definitely makes cool sounds, but most people seem to be put off by the workflow. I could see it being a sound design tool. That aside, Demos at DM are very enjoyable. I wish they did them regularly. I live downriver, so its an hour drive for me, not terribly long, but still kind of a hike. Whenever I go anywhere remotely close, I love to just pop in there and buy a pack of patch cables just to chit chat and toy with a module or 2.

The bad gear is that in 2024 you only get 8 voice of polyphony and it’s not multitimbral. An MC707 has 128 voices polyphony, Zen core engine and 8 part multitimbral…

I was heavily looking into the hydrasynth recently, and from what i gathered, the express is the only one not worth getting, esp if you are experienced with synths. People said they got bored fast. The Take 5 is pretty sweet for sound design and percussion shit

I liked Bad Gear better when it was about bad gear. I understand there is a finite amount of gear to review, but surely he didn't exhaust the list of actually bad gear before moving on to good gear...sometimes good gear that just came out within the last few years.
