In this episode of Bad Gear, the show about the world's most hated audio tools, we are going to talk about the Arturia Minibrute Analog Synthesizer. Is this self-explanatory instrument the ultimate tutorial in synth form?
Please excuse the disrespectful use of the word "schizophrenic" in the verdict.

Minibrute is a largely misunderstood synth. I have it since 2015. It's the softest sounding synth I've played or even heard (apart from Roland Alpha Juno). With resonance at zero it can be even too pillowy. But, if you listen to demos from the likes of Perfect Circuit...yeah, ugly, harsh sounding synth. Brutefactor at 9 o'clock is the sweet spot. A PWM lead with resonance from 12 to 2 o'clock and a bit of brutefactor has a really beautiful, musical crunch to it. And while everyone go crazy with the metallizer and accusing the Brute of sounding harsh, I've created really delicate leads with it. Such an underrated and misunderstood synth. It's good that the prices are low at the moment, because given it's prototype level quality it's good to have a spare one :)

@@magnuseriksson8081 I would recommend it to non-keyboard musicians who are interested in a synth to expand their pallette. They sell as low as $200 these days. They don’t take up any space. They sound amazing and excel at sounds that work well in a band setting. If you need presets for convenience and want to play chords, get a microkorg, but if you want to play melodies and bass lines and you are willing to learn some knob-turning, the minibrute is hard to beat.

I actually prefer the Microbrute both for its diminutive size and its lower pice. It's also got a few tricks up its sleeve that the Minibrute doesn't. It's a deceptively powerful instrument that can do more than its front panel suggests. That's not to say that the Minibrute isn't a good instrument as well. I like its layout and sliders. Both machines can sound really big considering they're single-oscillator synths. I tend to rather like the aggressiveness, and if you really dig deep, there are a lot of different sounds possible. I don't think the Minibrute, especially at low used prices, is a bad option at all. Personally, I'd like to get my hands on a Minibrute 2. It looks pretty awesome!

The Minibrute is an awesome beast! We made a Song almost entirely with it, using the mighty arpeggiator. (Song is called "Going in Circles"). But we still sold it after a while because the Microbrute made it kind of redundant with more features (that awesome sequencer!) and only a few minor features cut!

The main advantage of the mini over the micro is two ADSRs. Run either through a Zoom CDR and you have a mono synth that can do great things and make new exciting sounds for years and years. But be aware, if you want to play live you really have to keep your patches similar and simple so that you can change them quickly between songs. If Arturia would just make their drum machines and mono synths have patch memory, these things could really be INCREDIBLE. Since the polybrute finally has patch memory (I guess the matrixbrute does too), I'll just hold my breath for another decade. As far as the micro goes, I can't speak for the mini because I don't own it, but AudioPilz kind of confirms it is the similar, it does miss out on some basic sounds that you might want from a mono synth, mostly because you are stuck to only one oscillator, but it is also cool that it sounds DIFFERENT than other synths and might force you to think differently. Another pointer with the micro (don't know if it is the same with the mini) the saw and square waves are deliberately out of phase by a certain degree so that when they are added together they make a saw wave one octave up! This can be really useful if you understand it. EDIT: Another huge tip is that the microbrute (and probably mini as well) often sound BETTER when you don't push the oscillators to 100%. I usually ride them around 50%, because once they start to drive the filter (which they are designed to do) the sound gets thinner and loses a lot of character in exchange for that driven sound. I had a friend who hated his micro until I taught him this.

I always kind of liked VSTs and stuff as a kid, but was just getting into analog gear my senior year of college. I bought a JX-8P, which was ok, but did not really scratch that itch I had developed for the analog sound. Then this thing came out; I was blown away by a video from that year's NAMM, and knew I had to have one. I bought one of the first units to be available, and I was hooked to analog gear for life. 8 years later, I have plenty more monos and polys, and a decent sized eurorack system. But! Something about the Minibrute's sound and UI is still able to put a smile on my face. It may not be the best at classic analog sounds, but it definitely has a raw, unique sound that is polarizing in all the right places. Full disclosure, initial QA was not the best. I had to fix the keyboard for a bumper that came out of one of the keys, reconnect ribbon cables that were falling out leading to issues on top, and even had to desolder / solder a replacement filter select switch, which just died and rendered the synth useless. Still worth it!

This was my first real synth, coming into synthesis from a background in electric guitar, it was indeed the best starter synth, plus I loves the aggressive sounds, especially with after touch set on filter mode. This synth really starts moving when the filter is controlled with a step sequencer, and is pushed through a DS-1. If you fancy more girth, control another osc or two with it that are fed back Into the minibrute to fatten up that saw. Then Brute factor until it's unusable

This was really great! I actually bought the 2S because it would be my first introduction to using modular synthesis, so can vouch for how easy it is to learn and grow through Arturia synths. Excluding the Matrixbrute/Polybrute, I think it's safe to say that their synths are primarily for people who want to move away from DAWs or try new forms of synthesis outside of VSTs (especially now that the microfreak has a vocoder). Maybe not the best for veterans, but great for folks stuck in quarantine that want to learn a new form of sound design.

As someone who started with the Microbrute as my first hardware synth (and have now added a Minibrute 2S as well), I never really found it that hard to get smoother, warmer or bassy tones out of the Arturia stuff. Main points imo are not having the oscillators cranked to the max as someone mentioned here already (they will start to drive harder near maximum) and being a bit more sparing with throwing in every waveform on the mixer on every patch. Would you normally use a full volume saw, square AND triangle all layered on top of each other in the same octave on most patches on another synth? Not really. Pick one or two and mix to taste.... add some triangle in and the low end becomes very fat. And stay away from the Metalizer (except when you need it.) And then of course lpf and fx does a lot, any analog mono without any fx is going to sound pretty flavourless in a musical context except maybe for basslines. The Brute Factor can get really grungy past 50% but I find maybe 10-25% on a lot of patches can almost smooth it out and make it more "buttery" - that's how it sounds in my brain anyways. Just my 2 cents. Love this series btw!

I purchased an SE for a good price after the initial hype wore down...you can't deny Florian, that this was truly a "Game Changer" synth...a low priced analogue mono synth with modern parts and design, and one knob per function. The Moog stuff at the time was way more expensive, and the Dave Smith stuff, while better sounding and more expensive, required menu diving and/or an editor librarian to get decent patches out of. I still have my Minibrute and need to use it more...Thanks for posting, and I'll see you next time!

I always assume that the terminology "bad gear" is what the synth illiterati call it. I love how with every episode Florian, you demolish the notion and properly demonstrate that in the right hands (in each case yours), these pieces of synth hardware are anything other than bad. Every synth has its weak points (arguably the Moog One is its price) it has its compromises because it is aimed at a niche in the market. If calling gear bad means more AudioPilz then bring it on! With a friend we worked for 1 full year with the Minibrute, the only thing we ever used from this synth was his noise generator, which sounds great ; however despite me trying very hard to use the full capabilities of this synth, we ended up selling it because its a shame to keep a synth only for the noise generator; hoppefully it found a more concerned user! Also, some Arturia product can sound good, but I really need midi CC and I find it's a shame to not have midi CC capabilities ; they said it's because they choose to do it fully analog...but does it makes a difference ? If any one have an answer about this feel free to share!
