I think about selling my Octatrack every once in a while but then i come to my senses. I bought and sold a Digitakt 2 because after years of Octatrack use, the DT2 felt limiting. I get why people hate the OT because I really didn't fully understand it until i used it for a year. Now every other sampler/sequencer feels like moving backwards. I still learn new things to do with it! This is truly the best bad gear.

It's swings and roundabouts innit? I had an octatrak 1, I found it intuitive and got a really nice flow, I could visualise everything I wanted to do with it, which steps to lock, parameter changes, parts, alternative parts with the cross fader, and with the parts chaining, then I sold it and went 'in the box' with reason, I got a Roland MC 101 and couldn't make head nor tail of it...

I got my MK1 in early 2017 (about a month before the MKII was announced and the price of a new MKI dropped to $800), it's one of the most used pieces of gear I've ever owned, and I still finish plenty of tracks*. The MK1 is good gear, though, for these reasons: -Hard plastic buttons that won't get sticky and awful in a few years -LCD display that won't be unreadable from burn-in in a few years -Educational: lower headroom inputs teach you about the importance of proper gainstaging -Slow, unresponsive encoders give you more time to reconsider bad decisions -Unintuitive, unmarked button combinations to keep out the hoi polloi *finished tracks were not made with the Octatrack.

Someone donated an Octatrack mk 2 to my local thrift store. It looked like it was in perfect condition, complete with gig bag and decksaver. Unfortunately, the store personnel must have looked up what it was and what it was worth, because they kept it locked up in a glass cabinet and it had a price tag of €1100. After two weeks they lowered the price to €900 at wich point it sold in a few days. This was not a pawn shop or second-hand music shop. Everything there is donated and sold for wellfare. No, this is your typical thrift store: Kids ice skates, pots & pans, old ladies' blouses, smelly leather jackets, disgarded exercise gadgets. Octatrack mk2.

Octatrack was the first instrument that took me 30 minutes to get sound of it. I borrowed that from a friend to play around with that for 6 months, and I really didn't click with that. I played couple shows with that tho, but I used it as sample player only with the simplest use case possible. And that's actually the best way to learn octa - select one use case and practice it. Since its basically DAW in the box with tiny screen, be ready to spend equal amount of time as learning new quirky daw.

Thank you, AP, even before the review begins, for helping me to figure out that laughing GIF is supposed to be Alfred Molina. Pertaining to what you are reviewing, I’m going to make note of one thing. Back before I discovered that I prefer triggering all of my cells with my own hands instead of using sequencers if ever possible, I had thought on occasion about getting such a dream machine as this Elektron model showcased here (or a Clavia ddrum model). There was something appealing about having a drum machine with modeled drum tones on it instead of just a module like the Novation Drum Station. That changed when I discovered not only that I don’t like sequencing any longer but also that somebody needs to model the Simmons drum line as well as the Roland beatbox wine.

I still love the OT. It's weird as hell but it's incredibly rewarding. To this day the most glaring omission on this unit is the 6 parameter knobs---as in there should be 8--so that I can pull up a mixer screen that gives me levels on all 8 tracks. But this isn't possible. The "mixer" screen is more for input and output levels and mutes but no dedicated level knobs for individual track levels.

I have two co workers wanting to buy this, I have walked them through positives and negatives, but neither really understand when I tell them the learning curve is extreme. Also push3 standalone should be next

That second jam really cooked! Gotta admit, the final number kinda had me hearing "All your base (base base) All your base are belong to us" in my head.

That Spring Reverb sounded nothing like a reverb, let alone a spring. And flashcards……….. in 2024?

That spring is quite controversial indeed

I have a friend who got so totally frustrated by it that the machine ended her life smashed against the wall. Yep, some gear do make you feel that way and some feeling that way may well go all the way!

Destroying an OT is insane but also completely understandable.
@AudioPilzАй бұрын
I would call that a rather drastic measure...

Merry Christmas as well! This time's suggestion is the very hands on but still powerful semi-modular desktop synth Intelijel Cascadia.

Wow. It’s not often that people publicly ‘own’ being a Sex Tourist, like this … They did change the name - to Fugging - in 2021, didn’t they?

Octatrack.... they made a gear that make you wanna use DAW and VSTs again.... instead of being created for the opposite.

Love it or hate it, it is a centrepiece of many studios and live sets. I am extremely annoyed with the lack of overbridge, and the fact it is basically stuck somewhere between MK1 and Digi MK1. I have it for years and for what I need it, it is an amazing device, but it could use a fresh take and modern stuff like storage (I lost two cards to the "operations" and I am lucky my OCD forced me to back these up). I do not use pickup machines, but sampling etc - there is nothing out there with so many features that also does this much sampling. I know you were saving this one for the holidays, Happy Bad Gear! Merry Christmas and happy New Year, cheers mate!
