Hey AudioPillz! Where did you get that (at 6:32) sample from? You have put some effects on it, but I believe the original is some kind of large wind instrument (in a huge hall). It's a classic sample that was also used in some classic drum 'n bass tunes. I'm dying to know where it's from.

My 303 turned 21 this year. I bought to play samples in a death metal band, since laptops were frowned upon for live use back then. 😂 Later on it lived on the send/return of my turntable mixer for a number of years, as an effect processor. Finally about 9 years after buying it, I started using it to make beats. It's a pain in the ass to make full tracks on, but definitely a gem for what is does well.

I gotta say, your walkthrough of the UI of the SP-303 suddenly makes a lot of the more inscrutable design choices of the SP-404 mkII easier to understand, if no less frustrating. So many things on that box seemed designed to work around hardware limitations that no longer exist on the 404.

I have one of these. I bought it way back in the late 90's. I use it primarily as a sound FX trigger box that I also run my mic through when I DJ , on radio usually, sometimes gigs. I use the delay FX on my vox and it means i can monitor all that myself live on air without headphones etc. I still use it at gigs now! It still has the same samples that I loaded onto the internal memory. Sirens, foghorns, "Hardcore will never die", "All Junglists!", mentasms, "woop woop, its da sound of da police" and of course Alan partridge saying "back of the net' and "dan! Dan! dan! Dan!'

The Dr sample, and the Sp.505 Digital Workstation, was a Great tool, to begin learning actual Beat making, ( I started on sl1200s, Having to scratch in a Kick and snare which now, is like way cooler than anything i hear now, what I am saying is For what It was, and Once one got firmiliar with the endless menu pushups, It was a solid machine that not only Captured many a ''Nostalgic moment'', But also was an INCREDIBLE tool when having to switch mediums to a digital audio workstation on a computer, I was already firmiliar with Transients, Wave editing, and sampling to almost an artistic degree to get the sounds one wanted, I loved that I could just record a raw sound into it, and be able to make a Beat from the atmosphere I was in, Before I had the seemingly ''unheard of SP5'' Inna mi backpack for three or four years, I had learned the uber basics of sampling as a Turntablist. Back then it was Just cool to Have a Loop of a Beat playing while one could Utilize BOTH records to form a Scratch sentence etc.

Not the same, but better than the later ones. The Compressor of the OG 404 is particularly nice, too. Why do they have to mess with stuff?!!
@rorz999Ай бұрын
The OG 404 is the worst of both worlds. I'd rather have an SP-303, or the 404 SX/A over the OG 404. Horrible remote control style buttons (unlike the 303's god-tier pads), and it sounds like a 128kbps MP3, without the modern conveniences of the SX/A (clean sound, faster load times, SD card, ability to move samples between pads), or the lofi goodness of the 303
@OPdbxАй бұрын
@@rorz999 I currently only own the 202 and 404OG, but I've owned a couple 303s in the past. The 202 and 404 have nearly the exact same pads, and from my memory the 303 was no different and looking at pictures online they don't seem very different, but they could be 🤷♂. Regardless I don't think any are even close to god-tier

The sp 303 was best for what it became famous for: recording in a raw drum loop, a bootleg chop, and playing in a bass line from a synth, and making your whole track on just that. You didn't need much more than audacity or any random vj software for syncing and pitch-shifting your drums to your samples. Once you realized what it was good at, you found why it became famous for the unique sound and warm, raw flavor it had. For someone accustomed to sp404mk2 or akai equipment, the limitations might be too severe. But if you just want old school, east coast production that's more akin to dj mixing, then it's endlessly useful and fun.
