This was my first piece of MIDI gear, bought from Musician's Friend at over 75% off list price in 1993. I put in a lot of time with that manual - Korg should have offered a certificate program to those who managed to decently operate the S3. The main reason I haven't let go of it today is because of all the time I've spent learning it.

The Korg S3, never heard of it despite being deep into music tech since the 80s. I remember around this time the fashion was to buy a workstation keyboard and either use the internal sequencer or an external computer based one. This was the original "in the box" concept, so drum machines were considered passe back then. Only really excellent machines such as the Roland R5, R8 and R70 could compete in this hostile late 80s/early 90s anti drum machine environment 🥁

I bought the Korg S3 because of the realistic drum sounds and SMPTE in 1991 and use it up to today. Specially the brush kits are great with sweeping !! Since I watched my first video in this series, I knew the day would come that you would be reviewing this unit. As a previous owner, I can attest to the cryptic operating system and serious menu-diving required to operate this unit. However, I was extremely fortunate to have owned the Alexander Press "Learn It Right The First Time" manual for the S3. What a difference for understanding how to operate this beast! While it was lacking in storage space, the Alesis Data Disc solved this admirably. I miss it terribly. Never should have sold it. Thanks for such an interesting channel!

I had to like and reply because I have the exact same set up. The book, S3, Alesis data disc. Also both the Instrument and Dance expansion ROM/RAM and a couple RAM cards for storage before I got the Data disk. It was my 1st drum machine ...I didn't know any better! One feature that was barely mentioned is the SMPTE time code generator. I used to stripe tape with a Tascam Portastudio 4 track cassette and was also using a Roland rack mount Guitar Synth (RA-100 I think?) for external sequencing. It was a total pain in the ass but it worked. Another note worthy S3 feature is the ability to disarm the 4 pattern tracks and use as a stand alone 8 track sequencer. That and the 6 audio outputs, the time code and 2 midi outs made it a pretty serious piece of gear at the time. It may have been late to the party as a drum machine, but it does have some pretty unique features and depth of editing available. Like a previous comment, I purchased the S3 brand new just above cost when they were being discontinued. Years later a friend loaned me an Alesis SR-16 and I met my first "friendly" drum machine. The S3 basically has no preset patterns, it was all about programming it. I bring it out every once and a while and the sounds are still very usable. In a sense I am proud to know the S3 is considered BAD GEAR because I made it work at the time!

1. That beat LED might blink so short that it might be shorter than your camera's frame time -- and so not get captured every time. 2. If you plan on keeping that S3, find somebody who does electronics repair; 1990s gear is plagued by bad quality electrolytic capacitors that leak and destroy gear. Weird hum and noise issues are typical symptoms of caps in the output amp giving out.

The S3 is the quintessential drum machine that sounds like a drum machine, at least not without drummachineherorics. Korg threw it all in there, wrapped in a wet paper towel, and threw it at the market. If you stand the editing you will be rewarded with... a drum machine. @ZetaCarinae I find for individual sounds that simpler is adequate. My Waldorf Attack has ADR and a ‘shape’ stage. Since sounds tend to be short and quick, all you really need is that variation in the attack vs sustain. Now if you want ‘one finger jams’ or short perc loops .... 8 stages is cool. Of course in a DAW any knob movement can be automated, or in hardware anything can be MIDI controlled.

I wonder if you would be interested in doing a dream gear episode? Quasimidi Raven (max) , Access virus T12, alesis Andromeda. You know, those holy grail synths that nobody could afford or even get their hands on in certain countries. Those were the type of synthesizers that turned your future music magazine into a Playboy.

It was the follow up to the proper 80s-styled DDD-1 and 5. The DDD1 was a serious box of instant doof-doof-blatt, with a horizontal learning curve. The S3 was a yacht rock drum box in an acid house universe.

those 'clacky' mechanical pads are awesomeness as precision note triggers... assign a note per pad (User Mode) or Major and Chromatic modes. Easily flip between 8 tracks (ch1-16) and assign them to either MIDI OUT A, MIDI OUT B or MIDI OUT A+B. Perfect for a DAW, where you can address 8 armed instruments singularly (on different channels) by simply selecting track 1-8 and if you had 8 hardware instruments... assign each of the 8 tracks to MIDI OUT A+B and have 16 synths available.

"You've never heard of that ground breaking product before? Me neither..." No kidding! No sooner than you named it, I was thinking, "Wait. The what?" Looking at the styling, I knew exactly when it must have come out. But, I had _never_ heard mention of it before right now. LOL! Okay. You just made that thing sound fantastic. I'll never deal with it (I'm horrible with drum machines anyway). But, I was prepared to hate it no matter what. LOL

So this is basically a Yamaha RX with some extra sound editing features but the same drawbacks (tricky UI, no filters, no real time tweaking, depends on proprietary cards for adding sounds or saving patterns). Easy to see why people who could buy an R8 or MPC60 ignored it in droves.
