In this episode of Bad Gear, the show about the world's most hated audio tools, we are going to feel our blood pressure rise in the face of two of the most despised guitar amps of all time. Can we get some usable sounds out of them? Should they be destroyed?

Funny. Most people who buy the Marshall MG series really like them. Even guys playing Marshall half stacks have said they like the MG series for dragging around to practice. I'm probably going to buy a MG30GFX for less than $300. Can't go wrong for a practice amp.

I had a MG100HDFX Head unit with the 4x12 and it was unbelievably solid. It’s what introduced me to Marshall. It blew Peavey, Kustom, Crate, Randall and Line6 out of the water. Sure, it’s not the greatest Marshall to exist, but if you want affordable, raw, with tone and range, and that historic Marshall sound, the MG100 is great for that. Just know at the end of the day, adjusting the settings and a decent pedal or two, and you can find a sound you’re looking for without paying $2,000 or more for in just a head unit alone. Don’t settle for this stigma of shitting on lower end Marshalls because of the price. You can get anything you’re looking for with some extra equipment. Just know every band you listen to, and most KZbinrs doing reviews, have extra hardware in their guitar or pedals and it will never be the same as you and your raw amp. Just get some new pick ups, and pedals, and you’d never know what Marshall you’re playing on.

I recently had my MG10CD listed for sale after parting with my guitar and it just wasn’t selling. I watched this episode and wondered how my Microbrute might sound plugged into the 10 watt MG. I was pleasantly surprised by the tone I was getting. It complimented the Microbrute nicely. So, I decided to keep the MG10 and took down the listing. ‘Tis now my little synth amp.

I bought an mg15dfx dirt cheap, slapped a 10" greenback in there, changed the cloth grille from the boring black to a cool black and brown grille, got a custom marshall block logo, and boom. A completely different looking and sounding amp. It sounds cheap, but it still sounds good. Its a little muffled even with a great speaker but it has a cool ambient vibe. Like the sound you want when you're playing on the balcony of an old lodge in the middle of the woods.

I love my MG15R, the distortion is really good, specially after turning the volume knob past the 4th marker. My mids, treble and reverb is at max. Bass and gain are both dialed around 9. It's kept underneath my desk on the floor, so that adds a nice depth to the tone, and you'll stop hearing some static noise this way. I mostly play stuff similar to lamb of god, bodom, nevermore and such. If anyone is looking for a metal monster for a small room and this is within reach, have no doubt.🙂. Even with my 7 string it packs an insane punch. While i respect this videos opinion, if a metalhead is checking this, go check out Ola Englund's review of the MG15.

Love your channel, and as a long time guitarist this episode really grinds my gears :D Try finding a 15 watt combo amp with diverse range, excellent tone and lack of sweet spots in this price range, they don't exist. Review the 1 watt battery powered Marshall MS2 next haha. Beginner guitarists should save their money for a real half stack and pedalboard, don't spend $$$ on a low wattage practice amp because you will likely blow the speaker rocking in your garage regardless of the brand. Both of these product lines sound great with a reasonable size amp head, 4x12 half cabinet, and an experienced guitarist. I've owned a Marshall MG100HDFX with the slanted 4x12 half cab for many years and it always turns heads. I dial in the tone on the clean channel and one of the distortion channels only, same with the fx section (doesn't get much use, what pedals are for), and the amp head and cabinet sound amazing with any pedal in your signal chain. Line 6 makes some of the best value entry level combo amps out there; I don't prefer their bite for my music, but it works very well when done right and their amp emulations are perfect for beginners looking to expand their sonic palette. Just my two cents, keep up the great work!

I bought a brand new MG100FX COMBO in 2010 for 350€. The sound was very very un-clear and I couldn't get to make good repetition with it. It stayed at my parent house for some years and I finally tryed to sold it for some years first for 200€, then 150€, 100€ and finally 50€. No one wanted it ! In the mean time I bought a Orange Tiny Terror and a 2X12" cabinet with two celestion vintage speaker. Long story short, I cut the amplifier in two and separate the amplifier from the original speaker of the MG100FX and I short-wired the effect potentiometer (exept reverb wich is ok) to be sure I could ONLY use the clean clean on the cabinet. It works ok now (for occasionnal use).

I'm a Bass Player who wanted play a little guitar and got me a Spider V3 so I have a soft spot for Line 6. I have couple of their products. However, the Spider 3 is the rather "special" one amongst all the other giants made by Line 6. And, my opinion on items like this are the following: everything has a place, you just have to figure out where you want to use it. If "shitty" sounds are you thing, welcome to the "Spider" way of doing it. Otherwise, get yourself a Helix floor or rack model and be happy with a financially thinner wallet in the process and have an eargasmly useful sound in perpetuity.

I'm the proud owner of a MG15 DFX, the original MGs, I bought it some 15 or 16 years ago, and to me it sounds fantastic!!... the only drawback is that you can't dial a small amount of gain, even at its lowest position, it really goes to eleven!!...you have to play with the guitar volume for this, but you don't hit the gain channel of a Marshall to play skinny poppy songs, right?...having said that ,the cleans are round and very defined, and with the right guitar, you could even play some jazzy lines if required...the effects are a sweet addition ,but not top...but all in all the package keeps you playin'!!...was my practice amp until I got a Roland Microcube as a gift, and now the MG stays ay my holidays home...but still used and loved!...And there I can make it roar with it's tiny 8", and man, it's LOUD!....Maybe some day I'll try the ext. spkr. mod, but for the time being, I'm happy with it.

@@AudioPilz their Crush series are surprisingly great sounding for being a budget-friendly solid-state unit. There's no modelling with that one, the signal chain is completely analog. The enclosure is super solid too, it has the same feel as the Orange cabs. The 35RT impressed me enough that my first proper tube amp will almost guaranteed be a Micro Dark with a matching Orange 2x12. Their cabs are legendary for a reason.

I had an orange amp. Those amps mean business. Even the cheap budget amps seem like a good build quality. The only reason I got rid of it was because it could rock ANY tone EXCEPT those late 80’s hair metal tones, so I bought a MG15DFX and its perfect for those late 80’s hair band sounds that are my absolute favorite

As someone whose straddled both the synth and the guitar worlds for some time this was a great vid, maybe try another guitar vid now that you've gotten alot more subscribers? Dunno that I'd even recommend the Line 6 for industrial though. TBH I don't even know why you'd go with either unless you were a kid because $500 should get you a good used Line 6 Pod Pro and while even that ruffles purist feathers, you can get great tones for recording purposes. I talked once with the Singer/Guitarist for the swiss band Sybreed and I was shocked that they didn't mic a single cab for any of their albums.

I have been able to get good sounds from entry-level amps like the Peavy Blazer (II/Red) and a Fender (Japan) SD-15CE, but with so many great options for guitarist now, I am kinda surprised at how shieze these best sellers sound, especially in your very well made video. The speaker is invariably where the cost-cutting occurs on practice amps. I wonder if a $40 speaker swap would help these.

Why bad gear? The Marshall MG has no place in bad gear. The Spider is right there, it's really bad. But what do you think makes the MG bad? I have 3 MGs, the MG15 CFX, the MG30CFX and the MG100HCFX and I am more than happy with all 3. I even think the MG100 HCFX is better than my previous bugera tube amp. As I can unconditionally recommend the Marshall MG series. The old MG series (DFX) really wasn't that good, but the new MG series, which can also be seen in the test, is much better. Many probably don't know that there is the new FX series and connect the FX sound with the old FX series
