I think about selling my Octatrack every once in a while but then i come to my senses. I bought and sold a Digitakt 2 because after years of Octatrack use, the DT2 felt limiting. I get why people hate the OT because I really didn't fully understand it until i used it for a year. Now every other sampler/sequencer feels like moving backwards. I still learn new things to do with it! This is truly the best bad gear.

It's swings and roundabouts innit? I had an octatrak 1, I found it intuitive and got a really nice flow, I could visualise everything I wanted to do with it, which steps to lock, parameter changes, parts, alternative parts with the cross fader, and with the parts chaining, then I sold it and went 'in the box' with reason, I got a Roland MC 101 and couldn't make head nor tail of it...

I was one of the first MK1 owners of this fine instrument. I was able to do everything on this, but as you say, I found myself struggling to remember functionality after spending any time away from it. I would often have trouble figuring out where a sound was coming from. It's a strange beast and I still love it. My favorite thing was real time pitch on vocals. I moved to an Akai Force. I'm getting similar complications vibe but it's much easier. Love your videos! Merry Christmas from Detroit.

I still love the OT. It's weird as hell but it's incredibly rewarding. To this day the most glaring omission on this unit is the 6 parameter knobs---as in there should be 8--so that I can pull up a mixer screen that gives me levels on all 8 tracks. But this isn't possible. The "mixer" screen is more for input and output levels and mutes but no dedicated level knobs for individual track levels.
@rorz999Сағат бұрын

Thank you, AP, even before the review begins, for helping me to figure out that laughing GIF is supposed to be Alfred Molina. Pertaining to what you are reviewing, I’m going to make note of one thing. Back before I discovered that I prefer triggering all of my cells with my own hands instead of using sequencers if ever possible, I had thought on occasion about getting such a dream machine as this Elektron model showcased here (or a Clavia ddrum model). There was something appealing about having a drum machine with modeled drum tones on it instead of just a module like the Novation Drum Station. That changed when I discovered not only that I don’t like sequencing any longer but also that somebody needs to model the Simmons drum line as well as the Roland beatbox wine.

If you watch an octotrack video and watch somebody's hands they will push 3,000 times and move the slider 5,200 billion times and the sound will actually not change at all. Just go and watch the videos and scrub through them and you'll see that the sound is basically the same during the entire performance. It's exhausting really to consider this device in any capacity.

The coolest thing about it for me is that you can dj with it. Basic sample playback with a crossfader plus separate filer and fx per "deck"/track. Sounds simple but it's the only groovebox that can do it. The deluge almost can, but the cpu sometimes crashes on playing back full songs and trying to mix live
@rorz999Сағат бұрын
You can do that on the Pioneer Toraiz SP-16 as well (no crossfader, but you can put 2 FX on every sample, up to 16 samples at once, and one of those FX can be a filter)

Wow, the best Christmas special ever! Also, my favourite feature you didn't mention: Did you know you can use the track buffers as regular samples an use them in sequences? That way you can sample something live and have the sample automatically drop into the prepared sequence. You can even set it up so that the recording happens automatically during e.g. first beat of the measure and turn that track into a glitch processor. Oh and speaking of glitch processing, the Through machine allows you not only to process external sources through the Octatrack signal chain and effects, but also to sequence the automation of those effects. Honestly one of my biggest gripes with the Octatrack is that a single track is so powerful it almost feels like a waste to just use it as a drum track...

These are the reasons I quickly sold my MKI in 2015: _ Audio Mutes instead of sequencer mutes (!!!!) _ only 4 sound kits per bank (to me a pattern is a song) _ volume knob was for headphones (at that time) _ The sound is very cold and thin, I dont like the converters (just compare it with a digitakt) _ I had some gigs in Europe and needed to finance my plane ticket from Uruguay :)

Someone donated an Octatrack mk 2 to my local thrift store. It looked like it was in perfect condition, complete with gig bag and decksaver. Unfortunately, the store personnel must have looked up what it was and what it was worth, because they kept it locked up in a glass cabinet and it had a price tag of €1100. After two weeks they lowered the price to €900 at wich point it sold in a few days. This was not a pawn shop or second-hand music shop. Everything there is donated and sold for wellfare. No, this is your typical thrift store: Kids ice skates, pots & pans, old ladies' blouses, smelly leather jackets, disgarded exercise gadgets. Octatrack mk2.
