As a Virus C owner, I couldn't be happier with having this emulation on my PC because now, I don't have to recall all of my multi single presets when reloading a track, and I don't have to spend time recording the audio into the daw, but I *can* still use the hardware as a control surface to design patches-as long as the track with the plugin is armed and the synth is connected to the track's midi input, any changes I make to the hardware patch will be made on the software one as well due to the 1:1 cc mapping (for the most part). If anything, it helps me use the hardware more often than I normally would.

The ability to recreate my home studio synths on a laptop in a sleazy Euro-hotel is not to be sneezed at. Being able to dump and tweak sounds in both directions is fine by me, although the sheer hands on wibbling joy of the hardware is hard to beat. The manufacturers don't necessarily all see it that way. Yamaha protect the copyright of VL synthesis (or did - I may be out of date on this) despite not making any VL products any more. They allegedly see any attempt to make VL for free as competition for their current range of synths... mostly with good reason, IMO. VL was amazing and could be something truly special, with more development on modern hardware.

@@TooSlowTube…like just about anyone who uses Karplus-Strong? As Virus B and TI2 owner, the TI will be sold before I ever let go of the Virus B. It' just sounds better, the plugin emulations are nice in a pinch if you MUST have the virus sound but if you got the hardware it's far easier to plugin midi & audio than jump through all the hoops on a PC to get the plugin going, also there's no CPU overhead on your DAW with the real thing. The benefit of devices like Nord Rack or Access Virus is not the sounds (which i find inferior to some VSTi's like Surge or Diva), but having a hardware control panel. I'm much more comfortable tweaking a patch using knobs rather than hovering with the mouse pointer over the screen. Besides (i still have to check out the idea myself), you can run a hardware polisynth through a mixer with a fader and do volume sweeps. Good for filmscore music. Unless of course you prefer to program those sweeps in your DAW also.

I looked up whether the Proteus 2000 line of sound modules had the DSP56300 (it likely has the MC68020 instead as the CPU), but it seems I have to rely on the aging Emulator X3 for that kind of sound until Windows no longer can run it due to eventual API changes. I likely can look up how its filters work, which are pretty good. I've used it in Reaper as a CLAP plugin and have in a couple of cases also been using the CLAP plugin version of VCV Rack in the same arrangement. Again, no issues. If you're making a song with lots of instruments, it is often advisable to bounce some things down to audio and disable those instruments. Just a basic part of life on any OS with any DAW. I have the Virus TI desktop. I took it out of storage a couple of years ago to find that it would not boot. After a factory reset all the patches I collected from the now defunct community of users were all gone. Virus used to host patches made by Virus users all ranked by other users and it was really easy to import them into one of the many available empty slots. The VST plugin for a DAW used to work like any other VST but it served as a remote control for the Virus hardware. I was unable to get that plugin to work on my Mac. The hardware has a USB port and 6 x 1/4" outputs and 2 x 1/4" inputs along with SPDIF and MIDI 5din in/out/thru. The sounds on this thing are really good and stand up to the best soft synths you can get today. I wanted to figure out how I could revive the thing and get it integrated into my setup, but learning today that there's some emulations available seems like a better quest.

Certainly most of us are aware that mininova & Peak have already been stars of your show (beside the host himself!) but I'd still enjoy that beautiful controller-loaden Ultra-miracle ending up in your skillful hands sometime.

0:43 Did you have that issue of---fuck I forget if it was Sound on Sound, Keyboard Mag, or some other publication, but it was a sweet-ass comparison of all the VAs out at the time (late 90s). I kept that issue for a long time, before I probably used it for collage work, or who knows, but it was essentially a wishlist for me. And you rattling those synths off like that is tripping me out (I mean, so is this Cali herb, but still).

At first glance the DSP56300 is ticking all my boxes Virus, Nord, Waldorf. It's just a matter of time that I can basically use half of my studio both tactile and as a plugin. And I am really happy with that in the case of the Waldorf Microwave XT/ Xenia. Aside of that, I am really happy with the tactile control. Using less screens always improves my creativity and life in tracks ❤

For the Virus models without SPDIF, I would expect a bigger difference between DSP emulator and hardware. This would give you the interesting option of having for example, a pristine Virus B emulation against the much warmer sound of the hardware. Also, I suppose any synth with analog filters wouldn't make much sense to emulate.

Of all the goofy things, far from whetting my appetite to switch to VST plug-ins, the presence of the Virus TI module in the foreground suddenly made my palms itch for a Virus *C* module. Of all the Virus iterations that hit the market before Access began shunting all its attention to the Kemper Profiler range of guitar amp/effect modelers, the Virus C is the one that has held my attention, despite it now being over 20 years old as of my comment.

I saved up for the Virus TI2 for years, and finally bought the Keyboard version about 2 years ago, this is quite a bittersweet topic for me, as its really convenient to have the somewhat cumbersome TI workflow now easily available in the DAW, it does somewhat render the already aging hardware totally obsolete. The plugin sounds exactly the same, I've done many comparisons myself. I'm also sad because I've been waiting for the bad gear on the Virus since this series started and it didnt even get a proper 'bad gear' video :((((( Real question though, what are peoples thoughts - should I sell my Virus TI2 hardware????

At first, when I don't think it was even named Osirus and OsTirus didn't exist, it was a bit processor heavy on some computers but it's good now. All the Motorola DSP56300 VSTs only take a few % CPU on my Intel 13700K. When Nodal Red 2x comes out of beta it's going to be very popular. The two Waldorf emulations shure are ugly though. The official Microwave 1 plugin from Waldorf is much nicer to use.

So I have a beautiful Virus Kb sitting here. I've been running this emulator (on an M1 Mac) for about two years now - it's really close on about 85%-90% of the patches I have A/B'ed. They did a great job but it's buggy at times. Finding the ROM wasn't difficult but you really need to pay attention to the instructions.

I tested the Virus C in Linux and it ran fine, but I've never used a real one. I think I did have some xruns when running several instances of it, but I expect some of that to be ironed out in the future. The way I look at it, so long as a computer can emulate a single unit, that's all that really matters. Most people don't have 8 Viruses or Microwaves in their studio anyway. I think the key to these emulators will be finding the sweet spot for running one instance on a dedicated machine and not overbuying for that system.
@AudioPilz3 ай бұрын
Aren’t they all multitimbral?
@desktorp3 ай бұрын
@@AudioPilz I wonder if the emulation handles multitimbrality better in a single instance versus running multiple instances of it. I don't think I even tried layering patches in a single instance. Also would be interesting to see if it performs better in a headless mode; without the GUI. I know the Virus has kind of a bad reputation for how it handles multitimbrality, but I'm not speaking from personal experience.

Does being able to identify the TI1 vs TI2 in the video get me nerd points? The hardware can easily max out its polyphony and get glitchy with 4 or 5 patches at once, at least with the sounds I go for, so I've been waiting for the emulator to come out to see how that fares. Should be fun!

There are so many options these days that, for me, I don't "crave" these old virtual analogs. Never thought the virus sounded that good anyway. A kind of cold and sterile sound.Okay, good for some type of trance tracks, but there are other options that do that good too. That is especially true for loads of VST-i options like Dune or even Sylenth 1, to name a few. Yes, it's an "all arounder", but I think we have got so much stuff these days that does everything better than a virus. We don't "need" it, even if it is for free! If this wouold have been around in around 2004 though it would have been a different thing! I'm going the other way now of ditching things I don't need. Too much stuff I never use or if I use it, it is out of random when there is often another plug-in that does the thing I want to do better. Besides, I got lots of hardware now too....

I have a real Virus TI and the OSTirus. The latter runs well on my Win10 22H2 system powered by an AMD Ryzen 7900x. But it’s a lot harder on the CPU than a plugin coded for a modern CPU. Probably not that thing sucked but I got a few dell micros from the state surplus I can use to make dedicated hosts. Theyve got I7-8700 cpus and 16 or 32gb of ram so should do the trick. Also got some older ones with 2nd - 4th gen I7t cpus just ran the test on the 2600s based one and they seem more than powerful enough for the access virus C. Very very cool find Im definitely going to get a couple dedicated machines for these going. I did long for a Virus and a Nord Lead 2, but that was before I bought analogue gear. And I'm happy to admit that I may be wrong here, but...I no longer crave for any emulations of digital VA synths as I believe that any software recreations are more than capable of producing almost identical sounds. Not just VA synths, but any digital synths, including the Yamaha DX series, the Roland Boutiques and many of the Korg Volcas. That said, that doesn't mean I don't want some of the new recreations...some, such as the Roland JD-08 or the Korg Vocla FM2 offer the almost perfect emulation of the original digital synths at an affordable price, but these two examples also have the hardware feel (as I get some of the hardware VAs highlighted in this video do). But, I would never buy an emulation of a VA such as a Virus now, nor do I think I'd go to much effort to get a software version. HOWEVER (to contradict myself for a THIRD time), I do appreciate that software versions for these recent classics are available for free to young producers. The synths like the Virus and the Lead 2 were out of reach when I was younger, and the software versions didn't live up to what the hardware could deliver. But now it does, and I'm all for it. In short, I'd recommend newer producers to start with software, then figure out what it is you want from a synth and then either a) buy a hardware equivalent or b) get a software emulation. Don't download everything you can get your hands on...get a handful of synths (maybe one analogue mono, one digital, one rompler, etc) and learn how to use each one properly before even considering downloading or buying another.
