Whilst the JP-08 is tiny, the Jupiter-X is massive and very heavy. I made a video called "vintage synth nut trys Roland's latest gear" and the thumbnail is me holding it on my shoulder. Moments later I tried lifting it over my head for a shot and the weight was too much for me and it dropped. In a split second I bent forward and caught it on my back. I was then bent over with a Jupiter on my back. I slowly crouched down in a scene reminiscent of World's Strongest Man meets Mission Impossible until I was lying flat. I then slid it off my back. I haven't told Roland that and it's their synth. In fact, they might be watching. Hi guys! Might go for the boutique next time.

I had one of these and sold it as soon as the System 8 was released (and going for decent aftermarket discount). System 8 has the Jp-08 algorithm built in with 8 VOICES plus ju-06 and Jx-03 algorithm and the main system 8 engine (a total beast) and nice full size knobs and faders.

Damn, do I need to get a System 8 now? ;)
@rdean150

I need to pick one of those up. Of the 4 Boutiques I own and the other couple I've tried, the JP-08 is easily the worst. The knobs and faders are impossible to dial in. There's way too much range in their tiny throws. It's just a terrible interface.

@@AudioPilz Don't get it coz it's not bad gear! :-p It would be nice if Roland would release more plug-outs though. E.g. a Jupiter 4 and a Juno Alpha module would be a nice addition.

@@AudioPilz Yeah! I got the full 8 voices. When you chain them together, any voices after the 4th go to the second one and all the settings are solely handled by the "main" JP (meaning the sliders and knobs don't respond on the second JP). It's pretty sweet, though you're still probably better off with a system-8 or Jupiter X

I bought all three of the original boutiques the moment they were released, and was totally underwhelmed by the the JP-08. The lack of polyphony was an unpleasant surprise, as was the stiffness of those little sliders that made tweaking sounds a bloody nightmare. Surely Roland could have upped the price a little to at least increase the polyphony by using a more powerful DSP.

Although it sounds quite nice, I can't help but compare it with plugins like TAL's J-8 which feature: individual voice parameters like oscillator/filter/envelope slop, triple the polyphony of this synth, individual outputs for upper/lower layers, expanded unison behaviour, expanded possibilities for modulation, etc. The only selling point of buying a Roland VST in a box is the box itself, and seeing how small it is and how much they had to compromise to get it all in it's physical form, it ceases to be appealing.

@@CraigScottFrost Absolutely agreed! I don't really have access to a whole lot of hardware of any kind, my main keyboard is a Kurzweil digisynth that doubles as midi controller. Love it, don't know what I'd do without it, but even if I did own a lot of hardware, I'd find it easier and less troublesome to record using plugins. I feel like physical synths are far better for hands on sound design and jamming, maybe working out ideas, than actually using them for recording. But that's just me.

Once I played on a original Jupiter 8 (and Juno 6) at a guy’s home studio in a rich area in Belgium. I had no idea what I was doing nor did I realise back then that the Jupiter 8 was such a big deal. I just learned a bit how to make music with Ableton, a Microkorg, and I was yet to become the synth nerd I am today. I do remember very much liking the sound. I would play a random chord on a pad patch and I was like “Weuuuuw cooool, this thing sounds so lively and rich”. So yeah, all those clichés I read about it afterwards were true. When I saw the ad for the JP-08 - which showed a real Jupter 8! - I asked the music store about it. But we both - the seller and I - realised it was a bit of a scam and were both disappointed. Would be nice if there was a new Roland Boutique version, but fully specked (or - dare I say - a Behringer Clone). Meanwhile there’s the Arturia VST version. And that’s fine.

I think most of the Roland Boutiques sound great. I'm actually quite impressed with the Analog Circuit Behavior technology. However, the 4-note polyphony and tiny controls were a real deal breaker for me. That is why waited and eventually got a System-8. 8-note polyphony and appropriately sized knobs and sliders. Another thing to keep in mind is that daisy-chaining multiple boutiques together doesn't give you the proper polyphonic experience you'd think. The big failure is that if you have patches with long release times, they will get cut off before they finish. The design of the Boutique range only uses the next poly-chained instrument if you're holding at least four keys down. If you play a four-note chord and lift your fingers to play another four-note chord, it will not look at the envelope to see if those voices are still being used. It will see that you lifted your fingers and it won't use the second instrument. It will use the original instrument and cut off the releasing notes. Fortunately, this is not a problem for the System-8.

A lot of people mention the System 8 and Jupiter-X, but there's an even better option. Since OS 2.1, the Roland Fantom has supported "Model Extensions", which give you very accurate virtual emlations of various classic Roland synths. Currently, these include the Jupiter 8, Juno 106, JX3P and SH-101, but they may release others in the future. The emulations give you the full polyphont and zone layer capabilities of the Fantom and can be combined with any other Fantom tones in different zones. (or you can run up to 16 of them together, so you could have 16 Jupiter 8's going at once). So it's very flexible and powerful. And, of course, it's a professional unit with a great keyboard, impressive I/O and reliable construction. So that's the way I went. Of course, it's not cheap, but it's still a lot cheaper than an original Jupiter 8 these days.

I bought, a couple of years ago, a fancy eurorack dual analogue sequencer that used the same sized faders as on the boutique Jupiter to set the step pitches. As set up, the faders controlled a frequency range of 0-10v ie 10 octaves on a 10mm fader throw. It had to go, and I'd never buy any piece of kit that uses them.

So I'm a lucky owner of the original, since the '90s. I love it but I'll point out it had no MIDI, no CV/Gate input for pitch, and some (like mine) don't even have Roland's DCB interface. So the boutique does have more to offer as far as connections go, as well as the built-in sequencer. It probably doesn't weigh a million pounds either. 😁

I've got 2 of these in k25m's. I love them. Awesome machines. And Roland seems to be moving away from acb, much to my chagrin so the older boutiques are better than what they are doing now with last gen. acm in the new ones IMO (no, the extra polyphony is not worth worse emulation). The SE-02 is best in the boutique line (relative oddity that it is), but I'll place the JP-08 as my second favorite (tied with JU-06a). Funnily enough, I'm buying a mint JP-8080 in Synths & Wood oak cheeks this weekend (my old one is a bit beat up). Not that it sounds anything close to an old jP. If anyone NEEDS a decent JP clone with polyphony, the Deepmind 12 is one of the most underrated synths of all time.

@@alexwestconsulting Have the SE-02 too, man that thing is just awesome. Would like to see a Sequential take 5 in desktop version though, it would not have the same polyphony as the Deepmind and maybe a bit more expensive, but more waveforms, VCO and also good effects.
@alexwestconsulting
@alexwestconsulting 2 жыл бұрын
@@PORRFNK agreed. I've got a DSI Mopho X4 and a couple Tetras, but Take 5's proper VCO's, panel layout, extra voice and very good value will see me picking one up. Yes, If they make a desktop version I won't hesitate to get one. The multi-timbrality of the tetra, coupled with the chaining ability puts it in a special class though so I'll never get rid of them. But yes, the Take 5 no doubt is a great machine at a great price. Pads are tough with only 5 voices though ;). Korg prologue 16 (not the 8) is another underrated option. Sounds more Korg/Yamaha though rather than Roland.

The Roland SE-02 boutique I thought was amazing. I got some incredible bass tones out of it and I loved using it with my OG beatstep sequencer. The chorus 1/2 only available though a midi cc message that’s very strange indeed. The OG Jupiter’s huge draw was its 8 voice polyphony, 4 voice w/ no note priority (known of) no arpeggiator , tiny sliders, mini keys, no key split this JP-08 is ticking many bad gear boxs earning its place.

I got a JP-08 quite a while back, I got it when I got the TB-03 and I found that it is a very intersting synth. I took my JunoG and went out via midi to the JP-08 and then midi out to the tb-03 so they all play in unison and then feed the audio back through the JunoG, added a bit of chorus, delay and crunch and well, it's phenomenal. The small size of them I don't mind that much the JP-08 unlike the Juno-06 kinda does piss me off that the arpegiator isn't there, it is half polyphony because of course it is, and a lot of the features are sorta hidden via menu, but that isn't really that big of a deal breaker as what I love about physical synths vs a VST is that I can get hands on with both hands and tweak it in real time. A vst, unless you have some sort of duel mouse set up, or external controller, you aren't going to get that feel as you do with a synth. The JP-08 though like most jupiters, never feels like a lead instrument to me, it always was softer than a juno in tonal quality so I always have it as a backing or a layer to harder tones. Not sure if that is a just me thing or what.
