Yeah I love the boutiques. They´re not perfect and they´re getting better with every new generation, but the experience of interacting with something inspired in a vintage gear is there, but there´s a lot of snobbism in the synthesizer community, and digital is a bad word, Volca, Boutique... and nobody cares what other people thinks if the instrument is good for you. I see a lot of people complaining about the size, but boutiques are sound modules, so of course you will need a controller. Maybe for live situation they´re too small, but again, Roland never sold the boutiques for a live situation, they´re selling this line as sound modules for the studio. At the same time, a lot of people complaining about the boutique or volca size and they love Eurorack so basically some people wants to look more smarter than other or they just love trolling. And they{re not expensive. A VST insturments is around 150, an audio interface probably the same money, and if you add a hardware controller with knobs and sliders (even when they´re small), they´re not expensive at all.

FWIW, I've never used one of these, but I do have an original TR-808 and have put the Roland Cloud 808 (which theoretically should sound pretty much identical to the ACB hardware) up against the original. If I give it a bit of thought (and add a bit of saturation plugin), I can create a "digital" 808 sound that is nearly indistinguishable from my 41 year old analog machine. I mean, you could give your money to Satan and get an RD8 I suppose, and maybe that Buli machine has an edge in performance just due to size and format. But in the studio, I don't think you're missing much soundwise between this thing and an original 808. Also, keep in mind, that the OG 808 is kind of a pain in the ass to use and has very few features. It would have been nice to see this 21st Century update at least include a "tune" function. Alas, you're probably better off with a TR8 or TR8S.

Likely unpopular opinion, I vastly prefer the sounds of every other x0x over 808. (606 especially, it's so nice and soft when used in a chillouty song). Although it's the signature part of it, the kick is just too bassy, even in the unmodded version. i feel like the “too small for live use” is the only real issue it has, and it’s also the only thing i don’t really make use of with mine because i use mine for entirely different purposes. to me it sounds fine, and the USB out doesn’t bother me as a mac user. a lot of people talk about the RD-8 being both better and cheaper but the TR-08 being as small as it is made it the better choice for my setup since it sits nicely on my desk easily within reach without taking up too much space. i also don’t entirely mind it not having more modern/anachronistic features since i picked mine up intentionally because of the sequencer being more accurate to the original. if i want more modern 808 sounds and a more modern sequencer i have plenty of options in the box for that. enjoyed the video tho, i love your channel cause you take honest looks at gear and try to find where they fit into your own workflow, and i appreciate that honesty much more than the legions of nerds that just complain about “oh it’s small and digital” even if a lot of the things that were negatives to you were positives to me.

Please try to do the TR-606 next or in the future. They are still cheap enough and no one seems to like them at all....perfect for Bad Gear! I like mine a lot, $25US on small town craigslist! Also, what do you edit your videos with? They are great.

Having grown up learning to sequence on a TR505 and not really spending much time in the electronic or hip hop scene, I've always hated the 808, I've never understood it, and I'm tired of being at the gas station and hearing 808 beats with what must be 64th note hihats blasting from shitbox SUVs. That being said, I'm glad Roland has offered it in this module series, which overall I'm coming to enjoy (the JU-06A is a killer unit that makes a hardware Juno accessible and easy to integrate into an automated DAWless rig), and I wouldnt mind if they brought back the 505 with some improvements as well.

I'm a big fan of acb. Much more so than rompler based synthesis. But I don't know why anyone would buy a TR-08 when the TR-8s isn't that much more cash (used anyway), but I actually like the very small form factor of the boutiques. Anyway, I'd never use this except for fun. Way better overlapping gear out there like the Elektron Rytm or Jomox stuffs. Why haven't you done a vid on your Jomox yet? That thing is classic "bad gear". So frustrating to use in a way, so limited (by design, but so dialable relative to other kick generators), but the results are so glorious.

I went with the TR-08 + 09 instead of a TR-8S because I can use all the sounds simultaneously (the TR-8S lets you mix and match but has a max of 11) and I love the classic look and workflows. The tiny knobs don't bother me at all, but then I'm not trying to do Jeff Mills style performances on them either. That said, I wish the TR-08 had a mute mode you could lock into instead of the two finger contortion.

I'll take the Behringer RD-8 a 💯 times instead of this boutique 808, I really don't understand why Roland is doing that, is not that hard for a big company like them to bring back their products. If Dave Smith of Sequencial wich is a smaller company compared to Roland brought back the Prophet 5/10, why Roland can't, and don't forget Korg with ARP comebacks.

Never seen the appeal of the TR-08. It's always seemed massively overpriced considering it's running the same OS as the big AIRA with most of the functions locked off, and there are so many multi-sample packs available at various price points including half-decent ones for literally nothing. I do prefer using hardware in general but ultimately once it's in a mix with other stuff are you really going to be able to tell enough of a difference between this and a sample pack to justify a £400 price tag? I'd say probably not. IMO Roland really dropped the ball with the analogue revival considering what brands like Korg and Arturia have been able to do with *actual* analogue hardware at reasonable prices over the past five years.

Bad Gear means it's really Friday and now the weekend can begin. Excellent. I loved my OG 808 back in the day but I'm quite happy with my TR-8 for practical tweakage. If I were to succumb to nostalgia I'd probably get this rather than a Behringer - it would be primarily just for looking at and my TR-8 and Novation Circuit can handle all the drums I need in a hardware setup. Double extra points today for the kick drum at 4:40 and "more Rover".

Big mistake I made was selling this when I moved. I tried to replace it with the uno drum, but it's just not the same, and ended up selling that too. The tr08 may be digital, but the sound is loud, crisp yet warm, and huge. Spent many an hour playing with it by itself. The only other drum machine I was able to do that with was my tr 505. Great drum machine if you can get it for the right price.
