Another fantastic episode, this time on my FAVORITE piece of gear... you can have my XD module when you can pry it from my cold dead fingers! That being said, I understand the lack of LFO options, and the limited sequencer ticking the box, but not the needs of sound designers. Thanks for covering this "bad gear," it's always nice seeing what you have to say about these machines! The XD is great, but it really shines when you sync it to grooveboxes or a drum machine. I noticed none of the visual examples of the synth show its sequencer running at a non-default resolution: you can get a lot out of it by (i.e.) turning down the resolution to 1 step per bar and having 16 steps of pad/arp/chord motion sequenced...all before you even consider the FX chain! If you're using it for its sequencing, the 4 motion lanes that control almost anything give you back a lot of what you lose in traditional modulation.

My go-to synth for years. Its simplicity and versatility are its strength. But I think its versatility comes mainly from its user oscillator, and I would never bought one without that huge feature. Tom Shoebridge's OSCs are awesome, among others. It's a multi genre synth. I constantly find ideas with just by browsing sounds, tweaking knobs and effects etc. 80% of my jams use at last one XD. It's so good that I acquired a second one recently. Not only it doubles the polyphony in polychain mode but I got to reuse the user oscillators I bought. Yes, modulation is limited. But that's enough for making great jams/prods. Love that tiny hybrid synth!! Thanks for that video, because I do think it's still underrated. And I love the key bed (the keys size especially). It's a great synth when you are a beginners, it's still a fun guy when you're a seasoned home studio enthusiast, IMHO.

Im planing to buy another used module, to tower them ontop of eachother xD. it will be more flexible than a bi-timbral prologue, cause each can be tweak, motion/sequence independently, but most importantly, the footprint of one is good enough to be taken to the couch to do chill sound design

I do think they sound pretty good in a specific kind of way. It’s not something that I could get by with if I could only have one synth, but I had one for a while and it was a nice workhorse for a while and it sort of occupied a different sonic region than my vintage stuff did. It has a really modern and focused sound to it, and while it doesn’t have the thwump that you want from an analog synth, it does have something worth having around.

@TooSlowTube2 ай бұрын
Maybe it's the result of digitising it. You don't get to hear the analog parts directly, You only get to hear it digitised then converted back to audio, after the effects section. My main gripe is that the saved patches don't contain all the information for the digital oscillators, so if I make a patch I like with those involved and save it, what I load back next time can be quite different. I really liked it at first, and still have it, but that's put me off playing it for some time now.
@ianmorton17992 ай бұрын
@@TooSlowTubeThat's odd, I've had one since they came out and over the last year I've been mostly using the digital oscillator, partly because it never goes out of tune and partly because I had made about as many unique analog patches as I could with that synth architecture...but I never have had issues with the patch loading differently from the time before. Might be an issue to contact Korg support about.
@cornoc2 ай бұрын
@@TooSlowTube It's not the result of digitizing anything. You don't get to hear analog "directly" no matter what unless you're listening to the analog outs through an analog mixer on your speakers or headphones. By the time audio is in your DAW, or you're listening to it on Spotify or Bandcamp, you're hearing it digitized. It doesn't matter. As long as you're using a reasonable bit depth like 16-bit or higher, it's more or less perfectly reproduced within the bandwidth the sample rate allows, according to Shannon-Nyquist sampling theorem (at least as far as human hearing can detect), with some quantization noise floor depending on the bit depth (at 24-bit or higher, you're not hearing this unless your monitoring is ludicrously loud, especially while other sounds are playing).
@TooSlowTube2 ай бұрын
@@cornoc I don't use a DAW for any of that, only to host Ctrlr for setting up MIDI controllers to control hardware, or occasionally to play free VST instruments. So, yes, normally if I play an analog synth what I'm hearing is analog, not digitised.

The minilogue xd is this inbetween thing, like a highschooler with ADHD, so much potential but it's all left unused or mismanaged. They could've easily added another LFO and at least an aftertouch capable keybed. On my keybed, 2/3 of it is so bad that it requires a lot of force to actually trigger notes. But the worst about this is the sequencer. 16 steps, no proper transpose function (it restarts the entire sequence when you transpose) and very difficult to also sequence anything else with it. Still, due to its versatility I use it for 90% of my sounds and just let something else sequence it (either Ableton or the also kinda good, kinda bad Korg SQ64). Btw, you can change arpeggio modes by twisting the "Voice mode" knob. Speaking of knobs, the stock ones are impossible to see in a dark environment, so I replaced mine with Moog style knobs. Good SDKs can be had for free from Hammondeggs, he even has a free Plaits oscillator for the digital oscillator. Speaking of custom SDKs, I hope you never change the ones you have because your patches really depend on them being there, and not just being there, but also being in the exact same slot it's expected to be. If you move an oscillator/reverb/delay/mod patch and you have patches that use it, well, the patch won't work.

Another one!" 😀 I love my XD. It's the only keyboard synth which sits permenently on my desk. I wish multi-oscillator had more dedicated controls - it needs that desperatly considering how much additional complexity to explore is there. There's motion sequencing for every parameter and each 16th step can be arped independently. TBH I kinda expected you'd groovebox the be-oscillator out of it in this demo. Being a drummer, I bought one, along with the deck saver, as a versatile spontaneous addition to guitars and singers. Because i can easily throw it into my back pack on the way to rehearsal room.

Actually, SDK means "Software Development Kit", so even tho the oscillators can be made using the SDK, they aren't SDKs themselves

For me, it comes down to whether you vibe with the filters or not. It's got everything you'd want in an entry-level analog synth (excuse me, I meant to say it ticks all the boxes), but the filters are weirdly cold to my ears. It's grown on me, but I keep going back to my DW8000 when I want "warm" or even "fat."

It is hard to complain about this thing given the sound options it offers on multiple levels for a pretty great price. I guess the complaining needs to be left to professional synth complainers.

I really like this synth. I have the desktop version as I knew the keyboard was... shait. But I like the sounds and the multi osc is really fun to play with. It's the one I reach for first when designing sounds. I create sounds to play on a keyboard, not necessarily to sequence which might be contributing to why I like it so much.

Never had GAS for these. Thanks for keeping it that way. As always you manage to squeeze something good out of whatever (crap) piece of gear that you lay your hands on.

love the melodic playing. i did buy mine partially for the joystick though 😆 i thought i was the only one thinking it was lacking a bit of punch and grit for an analog synth. thanks for the episode!

I had a lot of fun with the sdk for this, it was the reason I bought this synth. I could get it to do what I wanted to do and it came in a proper package with some analog VCOs too.

Wow! 2 bad gear videos in a row of gear I own, and almost good respect by AudioPilz for them. I just need to remove the dust covers of the Circuit Tracks and Minilogue XD and make them play together again.
