It always puts a chip in my heart to hear about people whose parents were/are strict about grades. I never had to go through it, but it's so common amongst my friend groups, I can't help but feel that I was spoiled or am undeserving of my parents. My mom wanted to give me a better childhood than she had, and my dad gave me more affection than his parents did. They keep assuring me that I've done more than any ordinary person has, but I feel guilty for not being a fully functioning adult who can work through their social anxiety faster. I feel like other people would've been more deserving of my parents, at least until I think of my younger brother and retract that statement for his sake. -I got sad and vented here; don't mind me.-
@RhysezPieces2 жыл бұрын
Same. My mom typically only worried if I got Cs or lower, and her response to those were "What are you having trouble understanding? Maybe we can look at it together or get you a tutor?" She knew that there was more to grades than what was on the paper, and also checked if my lower scores were due to outside factors like stress or bullying at school. Even stood up to my choir teacher when he tried to fail me for a performance I'd had the first stage of pneumonia during.

Nothing incentivises your child more than never being satisfied when they do well, and devolving into a violent tantrum when they don't. Remember kids: the best parenting looks exactly like a 5 year old having a meltdown in an adult's body. Whenever someone calls you out on it, just say it's a cultural thing and you'll NEVER have to grow up and parent like an actual adult who comprehends the responsibility for your own child's health and education.

My Asian mum scared me so much that I became obsessed with not failing, which meant I would be ecstatic of the thought of having all the time that I need to study, because not failing made me feel so safe and happy. Eating, drinking water, sleeping, exercising etc have always been incredibly hard tasks for me, and I can’t remember the last day that I went to bed not feeling guilty as undeserving, because technically ‘I can always do more work’. My internal critic is towering harsh and I have no sense of support because I was never praised, so I break down or give up super easily. I wish I had nicer Asian parents :(
@Amreen__ Жыл бұрын
that's so... i don't know what to say really. please try to not be so harsh on yourself, life does not revolve around good grades and studying. if you dont take proper care of yourself then how will you study in the first place? self-care, health, entertainment, etc MATTERS. please don't ever break down or give up! even if you don't have anyone, you will still have yourself. build up your self-esteem and tell yourself that you are doing AMAZING. you really are, just go easy on yourself dear.

I never understand this type of parenting. When I struggle at something, or a subject, my parents start finding ways to help me. They still do the “grades are important!!” Stick. But it usually ends with some sort of plan on how I can improve my grades. A child doesn’t learn anything by being yelled at. Or at least not something that improves grades.

That's insane. If my child gets bad grades, first, I'd think I'm a bad mom for not supporting them properly, second, knowing they are not great at some subjects, why do I only bother to care at the time my child is graded? Why did I not bother to be interested in when my child feels they understand subjects during the semester? I'm not the one learning, I'm not the one going to school, but I could do something to help them instead of just letting steam out when it's too late, when whatever I say is useless. If my child is a complete dunce, I'd still love them. I want them to be successful for their sake, but my love doesn't depend on their school grades.
