First of all, Thank You Bill and Scott for sending me the PDF of the Transmission Death by Electrocution papers. I called A1 and they gave me a few helpful pointers and tips. I got all 3 of my ground wire installed yesterday. I used 2AWG wire. I made my own for around $35, I even soldered the ends before crimping them and heat shrieked to keep the weather out. My passenger side ground was almost deteriorated in half. I even used 4 cans of satin black RustOleum while I was under there and my frame looks new again. Thanks again for all the Extra help you give to us Powerstroke owners. You ROCK!!

Great video. I took your advice. I ran a new ground wire. From the driver's side battery to the left frame rail. Then left frame rail to the transmission. On the right side I replaced the body to chassis ground. Then ran a new ground from the right side battery to the right frame rail. I load test them with a 9007 bulb. The lights on the truck became brighter. Transmission shifted better. I even got rid of the famous Ford Voltage gauge sweep when the turn signals are working. Thank you again.

I can confirm this. I'm friends with a guy that does nothing but build transmissions. He specializes in E40Ds, 4R100s, 5R110s, and up. He had a guy a couple years ago bring him a 5R110 that was completely welded together like bill has shown in the video. It was the first failure like that he ever saw. He rebuilt it and gave it back to the guy. Two weeks later the guy blew another transmission. Same thing. Gears welded together again. Guy is furious at my friend saying he messed something up. Friend knows he didn't. He rebuilds it again for him. Two weeks later it happens AGAIN. Long story short they realized it wasn't my friend, but something else so they started looking for at anything and everything. That's when they realized that the truck was grounding through the transmission because his grounding straps were rotted off. They fixed the ground, put in another transmission and it's been good since. CHECK THOSE GROUNDS.

I can see this happening with all automatic transmissions. Solenoids not shifting properly because of bad grounds is one example.
@JohnDiMartino
@JohnDiMartino 5 жыл бұрын
Connie Tiesenhausen This is likely more of an issue cranking the engine where a large amount of current is needed to turn the engine over and there’s so much. Resistance on the grounds that it goes elsewhere to get to ground ,the current welds the parts together,then they fail from being welded on.
@MrTheHillfolk
@MrTheHillfolk 5 жыл бұрын
Connie Tiesenhausen Old vw rabbits would try and ground thru the speedo cable if you had a bad ground. Turn the key , watch the needle move and fry it right up as it tried to ground thru the speedometer head. Bad grounds can also attack engine bearings in the same way, from it trying to ground thru the bearings. Electric motor bearings can do it, install a grounding brush on the shaft..... I’ve seen too many bad grounds screw up the most unsuspected things over the years.
@edsequip
@edsequip 5 жыл бұрын
MrHillfolk when you have strange electical issues get out your voltmeter and do some voltage drop tests on your ground circuits to start with. This will often resolve the problem.

What I love about Bill is that there's absolutely no pretense. He doesn't have the fancy foyer of a dealer, and his mechanics might have grease under their fingernails, but he and Mikey and all the guys are MASTERS of the Powerstroke Diesel engines. Like Bill said about his uncles in an earlier video, they might "put all the money into the motor and paint the [truck] with a brush, but they go out and whoop some ass on race day," but these guys don't EVEN half-ass paint the truck with a brush! They go full sprint, line to line every day. People like these make America great--the honest doers. I don't own a Powerstroke, and I don't know Bill personally, but the character is there. Businesses like his turn over the engine of the economy on a 10-degree day.

I work on all sorts of cars and I have seen some weird ass problems caused by bad grounds. Once had a 2004 land rover discovery that the main engine ground broke off then when you tried to crank it over it would send the ground through the parking brake wire melted the cable insulation and locked the parking brake on. it basically welded the parking brake cable.

The paperwork actually says not to run a ground to the transmission case!!!!!! The easiest way to fix this issue/what I do is,,I run a new ground wire from the drivers side motor mount bolt to the drivers side battery negative connection. I buy a 4 foot 4 guage ground wire from the auto parts store for about 10.00 ,,it has a round eyelet on both sides. I do this on every 5r110w transmission rebuild,,even if you check for voltage on the ground wire during cranking,,,it may pass but the vehicle can come back a year later with the front pump destroyed,,that's why it's important to add a ground wire between the block and drivers side battery

Not trying to burst your bubble but how is the drive shaft giving you a ground? The carrier bearing is in rubber, there is rubber bushings in the leaf springs and hangers, rubber bushings in the shock mounts and rubber bushings in the away bar link ends. A rubber brake hose. Is it the parking brake cable? I think not, that would melt the first time it had to become the starter ground.

Somewhat unrelated but deff a ground issue. So I work with generators on movies/stages/rock shows and so on. All generators are ground/neutral bonded, I ALWAYS PUT A GROUND ROD DIRECTLY TO EARTH. Many ppl try to tell me I'm wrong and make their points of why and blah blah blah. But I ran into a situation on a film set where a extension cord got pinched in a lift gate on the hair and make up trailer, they said they were getting shocked everytime they were entering/exiting the trailer via the stairs and half the lights were out inside and certain outlets were not working. I imeditally told them all to exit the trail and don't allow anyone near it till I could trace back the problem. So walked the main trunk line from the genny and started checking all the camlocks connections to see if maybe one one loose and checking each distribution box, I kept getting amp readings in the ground and neutrals from the genny all the way down the line and was puzzled that the breakers were not tripping. Finally made it to the trailer and sure as shit I got shocked, another guy was inside the trailer checking the panel to see what the issue might be. And he noticed that when I got shocked the lights that were out flashed. Now we r really puzzled wth is going on here. So I walked around and found the the. Cord that was pinched, it had rubbed the insulation off the wires and was grounding threw the gate but wasn't tripping the breakers. So soon as we unplugged it the lights came back on. And everything started working correctly. Even more puzzled now we plugged it back in after isolating that circuit I the panel nd turned it off and then repinched the cable as b4 and then turned that breaker back on and sure as shit same thing happened but the breaker didn't trip. Now mind u this LA guy who is a "electrical engineer" I got in a huge debate with him that this was prolly being caused by the genny not having a earthened Direct ground. He proceeded to tell me basicly I'm a dumb younge kid and had no idea what I was talking about and the genny trailer is grounded threw the jack to the earth and blah blah blah. So I got on the phone to one of the old guys in my union who knows a hell of a lot more than me and has his own genny truck, he explained that yes I was correct and the probability of what was happening was cause it was a electrical backfeed lower than what the breaker would trip at. So I shut down the genny. Added a direct earthened ground from the camlocks port and then fired the genny back up. Sure as shit lick clock work every single distro pack tripped all the way down the line including the breaker in the panel of that trailer. We corrected this problem and that LA guy was fired and sent home on a plane. I was then appointed to his postion for the remainder of this show. and ALL THE GENNYS HAD DIRECT EARTHED GROUNDS from that day forward. This is still a debate I get into with gennerator guys still to this day. The thing is it, was circling the system and didn't have a ground so with the ground and neutral bonded it was trying to find a earthened ground to trip the system. All generators should be earthened grounded right at the genny so u don't get this situation. Be safe ppl!

to test bad grounds don't get misled by the term VOLTAGE DROP.bad grounds will display ELEVATED voltage.good grounds need to be low volts about 1 tenth of a volt,except while cranking they might go as high as half volt.always try to test dynamically loaded by at least having ignition key forward.

I did have the trans serviced ( by ford), and I believe they flushed, and “cleaned” the solenoid area, and my have even changed a couple solenoids - I’d have to pull the paperwork to be sure, but it’s still very bad ( like you are hitting something) when it downshifts... I’m wondering gif this grounding could be an issue... anywhere else I should check? I’m going to install some ground straps myself and see if it helps... I’m in Ottawa CANADA...

I'm having a issue that I can not explain and now I wonder if this is my problem! Grounding is so important.. I will check grounds but if it doesn't fix it I would like to send a video of my issue if possible?

I guess to ask a stupid question, but could this be a potential problem with the 7.3 manual 6-speed transmission?

sir I have a 2000 f350 cab chassis, it has a dead short that has me stumped. I have removed the gem module (that was shorted out and destroyed), and the interior fusebox. it still has a dead short. the row of mini fuses nearest the engine on the outer fusebox are shorted out. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
