😂 I don’t have the heart to (right now) remove our DIY garden bed (we definitely used earth tones to play off our home colors/columns) since our “little” family of boys + hubby helped create it and along with our paver walkway when our new home construction was done. Great memories- but it took forever lmao 🤣

I developed a passion for landscaping and started reading and collecting books. I bought a house that did not have a front landscape, just a measly evergreen or two. By this time I had learned enough to know that I did not know enough to make good decisions about such a large and important investment. I knew enough to hire an expert. I went to one of the oldest, largest, and most reputable garden centers in my region and made an appointment. For just 50 dollars, a bonafide landscape architect came out and measured my front property, we discussed dreams, expectations and reality. A week later, I received a scale drawing design complete with a list of plants and materials and a break down of costs. That was the best 50 I have ever spent. We negotiated who would do what work. It kept my costs down to their rock bottom for accepting the contract. I hired them to cut away the sod. I graded the soil to a gentle slope away from the house. They planted the ornamental trees and installed the brick edging. I planted all the shrubbery and perennials. They came back and filled in all the landscape rock. It did look skimpy the first few years as expected, but its been gorgeous ever since. I encourage any homeowner to hire a designer at the least to prevent dreadful or expensive mistakes.

OMG! I love this type of video! Please make more like this! Would love to see more common mistakes we need to avoid and simple ideas which provide a ton of impact, yet hardly anybody does. Like edging and mulch in beds! This makes my blood boil! Another common mistake is people do major jobs themselves to save money and they have no experience. Then they end up ripping things out in the future. So glad I found this channel!

If you are buying your own plants, it's really important to read the tag information. It will give you light and water requirements, height, width, spacing. It's really important to put plants that have water requirements nearly the same. I have been asked with my work if I would weed in between the spaces of the paver inlays on the driveway. I do not do this and stick to plant and flowerbed weeding only. Once in a while I do the cracks in the driveways or sidewalks, only because it looks so much better and maybe the homeowner is out of the area and not able to do it.

@BobbyKDesigns2 жыл бұрын
@Ska ya Bluuya. If they were a gift I understand wanting to use them. They could be used an edging INSIDE an existing bed. Then hidden with landscaping. That way they are being used to separate elements and functional but not really seen. Just an idea.

Hi Bobby! I have the same retainer wall blocks except mine are all gray (thankfully). I ended up adding another row of them to an upper retaining wall and now I have the top row that are light gray and the originals (4 rows under the light gray) and an entire lower wall) that are all aged and weathered dark gray. Is there a way to clean the older ones to their former glory?

So. New construction and I am deciding between a garden wall around 18 in high, (not really retaining anything just the bedding area)....or using boulders to define and raise the bed. In my head the wall is so much more difficult for the reasons you mentioned - it has to be perfectly flat it can fail if the water behind it isn't managed, and it feels like I'll have to redo it at some point. Are boulders a better choice in the long run?? Moving them in place may be a nightmare but is installation/maintenance generally simpler?

@Haydee Skeet I say go with what you want and then decide if this is something that you can do or need to hire a pro to do.

I love your vids!! 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾Very helpful!! What color landscape rock would you suggest against a red brick home? We currently have tan/natural colored river rocks but my husband wants to change them out for all white. I love the idea but don’t want to make it look bad. Your suggestion?🤔
@BobbyKDesigns2 жыл бұрын
@Cheryl S. Thank you so much for watching! A red brick home can be tricky. I don't like the contrast of red with white. Very aggressive. I like to install rock in the mindset of it almost being a backdrop and what your eye really goes to is the landscaping/plants. So, if you install white rock it may really stick out and look off. I personally like to go with a dark brown mulch with red brick homes. It's soft and can let the plants really stand out. If you're dead set on rock I'd stay with something multi-colored or tan/brown. Thank you for the comment and I look forward to hearing from you in future videos!!!
@cheryls.71442 жыл бұрын
@@BobbyKDesigns Thank you!! I should clarify that we have brown mulch in the front of house and the landscape rock is in a courtyard area w/hedges up against the house. Would white rock be too aggressive there?

What is wrong with that retaining wall? It’s like every other house in my neighborhood uses it. What do you recommend instead that is reasonably priced and DIY’able?
@BobbyKDesigns3 жыл бұрын
Truth... there is nothing functionally wrong with the wall if it’s under 2’ feet but as the wall gets taller more weight goes behind it which increases the hydrostatic pressure. I would definitely jump up to a bigger block (6” 65 lb+) to support a bigger bed and stay away from terra cotta colors. Just so much more to choose from nowadays. Why go to a block that’s ugly? Just my opinion...if a person likes bright red, go for it. 🙃
@ddomingo20163 жыл бұрын
@@BobbyKDesigns ahh ok, gotcha. I actually thought Terra cotta was the style type, not the color. I'd definitely wouldn't want anything bright red or orange 😎 I'm still a noob learning, thanks for your response and putting out these videos!

I was in the field installing for almost 15 years so that helped me tremendously in understanding this business, how to design, and understand what price ranges are for clientele. If you’re looking to design, I would continue with getting a design degree to understand the basics but there isn’t really a substitute for experience. I would learn how elements of what you are designing are constructed. Ex. If you’re creating landscapes with retaining walls, then understand how to install a retaining wall and the different types. I hope this helps.❤️

My pet peeve is a landscape that is overly contrived, too many different types of ground cover, brick and pavers and mulch and rock all adjacent to each other for no practical purpose with a menagerie of lawn ornaments. It always reminds me of a miniature golf course, too cute and too much gimmick. Keep the cute stuff in the back yard where the kiddies play.
