You are the hard drive repair wizard! I would have never thought it was possible to get any drive with that type of damage to work again, yet you did it! At least better than being dead : ))

Well you just turned it into a Maxtor 7060
@arnlol3 ай бұрын
Pretty much. I tried this because the PCB has a jumper to select the drive model so I figured what's the worst that can happen right? (The top platter had a massive head crash) I didn't really think it actually would work though.

Did the pc detect it? And what did the drive do after the seektest?
@arnlol3 ай бұрын
The PC detects it and it works as if it was a 7060, it has a lot of bad sectors though.

This is the one time I'll allow you to say that, cause it doesn't make any sense for it to work, and yet it does...

@@arnlol also kinda late but could be that the same ROM chip is used on the 7060/7120

I love early '90s Maxtor drives such as these, But it makes the seek of a 7060? That's odd. You did say in one of the replies of someone's comment that it had a headcrash at some point in time on the top platter, But have you seen a difference of the 7120 and 7060 PCB? That could be a factor, The ROMs may be similar, But I barely know such a thing.
@arnlol3 ай бұрын
You might remember that I posted a 7120 short in the past, that's the same drive. The PCB had a broken off ROM, and I tried the drive with my 7060 PCB then but it didn't work right. Well I managed to fix this drive's PCB but it still wouldn't work right, so I tried messing with it to see if I could make it work better but the bottom head of the top platter suddenly crashed making a very loud scraping noise. It all lead to this point. This drive works with it's original 7120 PCB and with the 7060 one, and my 7060 also works with both PCB, so the ROM doesn't seem to actually matter.

@@arnlol Maybe I did see that short at one point, But I'm too lazy to remember, lol. And usually with hard drives if a head fails or the platters are missing, It won't seek, Deeming the drive unusable. But given the fact that it seeked and was even recognized by your PC is unusual, Even with a missing platter! There may be servo info spread on both platters, But for this, there could be servo info only on the two sides on the bottom platter, But who knows?
