I have a bunch of older stuff I recorded on my PC/Phone, and this is one of these older recordings, from September 2023...
This drive is the one that was in this video here : • I saved these 7 vintag...
It has a lot of bad sectors, and I have multiple drives of the same model that work just fine. I don't really like how I moved a lot when I recorded that thing, but whatever it's probably worth sharing anyways. I guess I could always open it again if it's a big issue (but it probably isn't)
It is demonstrated booting Windows 95, then doing HDMotion and speedsys.

Speedsys is always so nice to see on an open drive!

Yes it is, and because the first part is just seek commands it will still look nice even on a drive that has a lot of bad sectors!

It's great to see what the drive is actually doing when hdmotion is running. Thanks!

Yes it’s really nice. If you want to see hdmotion running on an open drive I’ve done that multiple times before, and there’s a bunch of videos from other people too.

I recorded this in 2023, and put the cover back on as soon as I was done. This exemple has a bunch of bad sectors and I have 3 more drives of the exact same model that are working perfectly with no bads in my collection, which is why I even opened that one to begin with.

Hi Arnold0, thanks for helping me with HDmotion, I used it and it’s really cool!!! How do I run Speedsys and where do I install it?
@arnlol

I got it out of Phil's computer lab dos benchmark pack. I just copied speedsys.exe out of the pack onto a dos floppy and run that.

@@arnlol i also found version 4.70 somewhere online, i have both speedsys and hdmotion in a folder somewhere

just like hdmotion , you look the file online , move it in your dos device and execute it by entering "speedsys"

you should make another spin ups and down of your recent HDD collection in my opinion

I am planning to do that, I recorded some of the drives, but my collection is over 400 drives now so that takes a while, but yeah it will eventually happen, just not sure on when.

Did you put the cover back on? Or did ya scrap it? Or did it get the open drive cover?
@arnlol
@arnlol 3 ай бұрын
I put the cover back on the drive. I’m not scrapping a drive unless it’s completely dead (which this one isn’t)

Hi Arnold0 great video! I have a question... how do I install hdmotion on msdos??
@arnlol
@arnlol 3 ай бұрын
You don’t need to install anything, you just need to copy hdmotion.exe on a DOS boot floppy and once in dos run hdmotion 0x80 (for the first drive, 0x81 for the second etc)

Yes that’s why I don’t open my drives that are fully working, but older drives like these don’t care that much. This one has a lot of bad sectors, and I have 3 more of the same model fully working, that’s why I opened it to demonstrate it.

so as per your experience which is best for backup data for longtime? HDD or SSD | 2.5inch sata? any specific brand?
@arnlol

My collection is mostly of old drives. I don’t have a lot of modern drives and not much experience with them. I personally went for cheap used drives and copied the data I want to keep on 3 different drives so if one fails it doesn’t really matter. I think having multiple copies is the best solution if possible regardless of the drives being used? If you want some information about modern drives I know backblaze makes annual reports about the drives they use in their company.
I bought bad drives AGAIN, let's check them out!
