It may be comparable to a snail in terms of performance, But it has one of the best steppers in terms of sounds.

Seeing the seek times on this thing really makes you think about how fast the voice coil actuators on modern drives really are, and how even those pale in comparison to solid state!
@TheDiskMaster
@TheDiskMaster 7 ай бұрын
Keep in mind that even for a motor actuated drive, this is extremely slow. Look at the Panasonic JU-128 or NEC D3142 if you want actually good examples of performance from this era.

I have one of these on a hard card in my Corona Data Products PPC-21. Somehow despite its reputation mine is in perfect working order, however it is backed up like there is no tomorrow. I have yet to find a product made by Tandon that hasn't had corners cut on its construction (they remind me of as seen on tv products; they could be great if they were built to a higher standard).

Something like that. There is only one Tandon model I am missing from my collection, the TM755, which is my last hope for a quality Tandon drive.

@@TheDiskMaster The only Tandon drive I have found to be decent is the TM-500 series. They are fairly common, and are a cake walk to swap heads on (literally one screw and the whole head stack comes out). I am curious as to why your TM-362 seems to hesitate with its head movements at times (mine doesn't do this unless the interleave is set wrong).

@@bobjoe2827I'm not sure, but my WD262 behaves identically. I've got a few Tandon TM500s but my 503 actually laid down and died in the middle of trying to film it, so I don't really think those were all that great, either. Do you have a TM755?
@bobjoe2827
@bobjoe2827 7 ай бұрын
@@TheDiskMaster I used to have a TM755 that was just as bad as the TM702 in one of your videos. I sold it to an interested party a couple of years ago with the understanding that it was failing, and it died on them 2 weeks after they bought it. They sold it to a local watch repair business which turned it into a clock. It is a pity about your Tandon TM503, I have had good luck with my TM500 series drives but I still consider them untrustworthy due to their heritage.

@@bobjoe2827 Ouch, hate to hear that drive got turned into a clock. I'd love to have one someday, even if it was dead. Sadly, they're excruciatingly rare these days

It's hilarious seeing the specs on the computer at the end with a GB of RAM but only a 31MB hard drive.
@TheDiskMaster
@TheDiskMaster 6 ай бұрын
I built the machine with the intention of running Windows 7 to allow testing of these drives under "modern" windows, but NT does not include driver support for this after 4.0, and we have not patched the driver in a way that works yet. I test every drive with this same machine, so there's even one with an 8MB drive at the end.

It's a shame this one is struggling to seek as much as it is - it does make me wonder if the stepper bearings are getting a bit sticky, or if there's something wrong with one of the surfaces or heads (these Tandon stepper drives seem to have a single servo wedge on one head, probably head 0, but I've never been able to fully confirm this).
@TheDiskMaster
@TheDiskMaster 7 ай бұрын
Nothing is wrong with this drive at all, sadly. It has fresh oil in the stepper bearings and pretty reasonable media for what it is. These drives are just utter garbage.

@@TheDiskMaster The erratic settling time (most visible in the speedsys graphs) seems to be suggesting otherwise, especially considering how other similar Tandon drives tend to behave during seek issues. Admittedly I've never seen another example of this model, but similar drives I've seen in operation have been *much* more consistent.

I had two of these and they both sounded the same as this one. I did not keep them for long and sold them. One went to someone doing a restoration that used that model of drive that did not have a drive bay to fit a 5.25.
@TheDiskMaster
@TheDiskMaster 7 ай бұрын
Interesting, all of the ones I've personally handled were exactly like this. It's possible Tandon changed the firmware later on.
@TheDiskMaster

Agreed. The 5.25" version of this drive would have been the TM262 - Which has a nonstandard 5.25" bracket from the factory installed on it.
