Yes, that was Jeonyul, the maknae. She was just 20 at the time I think, and she had to shoot a scene where she had to drink milk and spill it a bit on herself. It was edited in a very explicit way, and Jeonyul was so shocked that she can't drink milk anymore. They were also very uncomfortable with some outfits during Vibrato era, they took pictures and danced while wearing them but didn't like them at all. They were told that the pictures wouldn't be released as well as the dance shots, but it turned out they were in the end. The company also didn't pay them much.

I noticed not only kpop lyrics but songs in general always have these lyrics like "I need you" "I can't live without you" or those breakups songs that promote not moving on and unhealthy longing for someone. Like always know you don't need any human to validate you.

@@nat_to_world yeah good example! I'll check it out! but even though I don't agree with messages in the songs it doesn't mean I don't like the songs, and this doesn't mean I think you can't have a healthy long for someone but these songs make it seem like if that one person doesn't love you then you're nothing and its the end of the world. Day6 have some amazing songs about moving on healthily. “Still” is one of my favorites like this. “So goodbye. Even if we don’t want this break up, the moment one person turns around, the end is decided. You and I can’t turn things around now” “Letting go” and “goodbye winter” are good ones too
@aka7117
@aka7117 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah i have noticed that. One of the few examples that actually portrays how unhealthy that mindset is. Is BTS'S 'i need u' which talks about a toxic relationship and how even tho the person knows their doing the wrong thing, and someone is hurting them and they should leave, they still need their tormentor because of the manipulation and dependence that has have been forced on to them by their tormentor, hence the title 'i need you' ' implying how bad the manipulation is that the person still needs the tormentor/love. And the bts song Hold me tight where they use the lyrics i can't live without you, to describe the end of a relationship and a person is not coming to terms with their mistakes and is saying i can't live without you because they still want the relationship to stay together even after all the nonsense they have done.

I agree that some of these are just weird and wrong, but others only talk about instances, they don't necessarily attempt to spread any kind of message An example would be f(x)'s shadow, a song I really love. It actually IS about a stalker, told from their point of view. It's even more creepy because it seems cute, but even in the music, something is off and it builds this sense of unease. Kinda like movies about serial killers only show you a story, not really promoting the behaviour.

As a Korean, I would like to share that the Korean language as a whole is just softer than English, so sometimes translations when translated literally don’t necessarily carry over the same connotation. Not all, but a lot of the misogynistic, sexual, etc. lyrics in these songs are pretty mild, but because there might not be a direct English translation, a harsher English word alternative is used. I hope that makes sense!

For Zico's Tough Cookie, I personally felt more hurt and disappointed by some fans' defense of the lyric than the actual lyric itself. When it was first released, I was a bit conflicted because on one hand I was so very deeply upset by the use of that word but on the other I also get that he genuinely might not have understood the context and connotations of the f slur and needed to be educated not hated. All this is to say, I understand the instinct to defend him from people saying he's a terrible person for making a mistake, but you can do that without also defending a literal slur.

Unfortunately so many non English speaker really don't know the actual meaning of English slurs, some even think it's cool to say them because American rappers use them in their songs or they learn them on social media. I feel like zico actually learned from his mistake because he didn't do it again.

@Swikriti Singh TL;DR Explanation Below the Cut If you listen to the song now, there IS nothing wrong with it because he changed the lyric. However, in the original version (what Midnight Theories censored), he used what is commonly referred to as the f slur or fa- word. It's a personal preference of mine to never say it, but there are still lyric videos on youtube that have the uncensored, original lyric if you've never heard it before and really wanna know. There's a lot to say about this term that I won't be covering, but if you're interested in a more in depth look at its origins, I would suggest reading the Origins of the Fa- Word section of NPR's article titled The Fa- Word: An Insulting Slur in the Spotlight. This article's kinda old and I don't 100% agree with everything it says, but it is easily accessible and the info in that section is good. TL;DR: It's a derogatory term describing gay men with a long history of ties to anti-gay violence and is used to generally belittle and terrorize members of the LGBTQ+ community. Even as recent as the early 2000s, it was commonly used to insult others by implying they're gay and by extension lesser. Today most recognize it for what it is- a hateful slur. Hope this was helpful to anyone who wanted an explanation.

tbh it might just be that i’m used to the more vulgar american rapper lyrics but most of these aren’t that bad. the cheating songs are mostly funny and toxic relationships shown in songs aren’t usually romanticizing them but showing their harsh reality- you keep coming back. songs like “war of hormone” are more ironic than actually serious to me bc there’s more in the concept than the lyrics. i guess we all have our own opinions when it comes to “controversial” songs.

It's not funny when there are a lot of people suffer from cheating, toxic relationship, and misogyny. But it should be okay if it used as satire, written to mock the society, and make listeners sympathize with the victims (great example would be yoshiwara lament, it's not a kpop song and it's sung from the victim's perspective but you could search up the lyrics). Lame ass excuses like "used for the artistry of the music" doesn't sound too appealing for me. But it's just my perspective. I listen to songs for the lyrics and songs with bad messages automatically sounds unappealing to me even if the music element is good

"Yes or Yes" is cringey; if male idols sang that, folks would riot. Also most Psy songs are filled with innuendo so it's kinda funny when people sing it in public. I think alot of songs in every culture has a bit of darkness and questionable things ("Hey Ya" is about unhappy relationships, "Muddy Water" is implied as either a man being left by a closeted partner or feeling dirty for his attracion to another, "Senbonzakura" is about WWII etc.), so it's fun to look into the lyrics. I'm a lyricist and I do it with my own songs.

For every song that has a "bad" message or "questionable" lyrics, there is still something to learn from. It may not match our current mindset, but these songs help us to acknowledge that there are people in this world and in history that truly believe and do questionable things that the lyrics describe. They tell stories in a way that songs containing less questionable lyrics would not. It is possible to appreciate such music without truly believing in the song's message. However, it takes a wise person to truly appreciate the art without falling into or criticizing such decadence and corruption.

I think some of your choices were a bit strange tbh. like F(x)'s Shadow. Yeah, I think it's about a stalker. A couple of the songs on that album have double meanings (eg. Toy on the surface being about a regular plaything and then when you look further into the lyrics, you realise it's about more mature toys). But just talking about an uncomfortable topic doesn't mean the message is bad, it's when it's perpetuating a harmful view when it's bad. For example, GaIn's F**k You is a song about marital rape. Just because it's a distressing topic, doesn't make it a bad song, in fact it's a really great song highlighting the problem. And just because the song sounds bright and innocent at first listen also doesn't make it a problem, for most songs, it could just be creating cognitive dissonance between the message and delivery to make you consider the message further.

I love this song so so sooo much and the MV even more, exactly bcs of the theme, it's not supposed to glorify but to show how unhealthy for both parts and how horrible the relationship showed was, in the MV we star thinking they're just normal couples going through a breakup, that they don't like each other anymore or sm like that, but then, there's the twist and it shows the boys dead. the girls are holding and "feeding" a love that is not there anymore. It's art, honestly. Also Jseph's rap has such beautiful hurting lyrics.

The discussion of toxic relationship or any negative side of humanity should always be allowed in songs/novels/any form of art. Remember that arts are not responsible for moral education, which is the job of family and school. Arts are more like explorations into the places where we can't get to in real life.
@lenqueen7907
@lenqueen7907 2 жыл бұрын
No, it shouldn't??? Just because they're not responsible for moral education doesn't mean they don't influence/have an effect on it, and that should be taken into account. Not everyone's family/school teaches them properly and not everyone has one, so pushing it onto those two things is you ignoring that fact. Just because they may be explorations doesn't mean they should explore everything. Not everything is safe to 'explore'.

Some of these songs are inherently bad that's true however, some were just lyrics taken out of context. I understand we can interpret this differently but sometimes songs have hidden meanings or even two different meanings at the same time. That's the beauty of evaluating them. I wouldn't go in to detail on every song on this list but I would use BTS' War of Hormones as an example. The song is supposed to be (and does a great job) at the inside of a teenage boy's mind. I am a teenager and female for anyone wondering. We are dirty minded and sexualised each other males and females do this. Most people would never say what they are thinking especially to the opposite sex, but we still think it. Anyone who says they don't are lying. I don't view the lyrics as misogynistic, they are just real.

I 100% agree. The only reason it doesn't recieve as much backlash and is defended till death is because its a BTS song and bts can do no wrong in their fans minds. Like can you imagine if a girl group had that song? Hell even another boy group the backlash would be insane. That song is completley messed up but army's really can't see it. I don’t think You In Me should be seen as bad message, they weren’t glorifying any toxic relationships. The whole album was actually about a love that starts out nice but gets toxic as time goes on because one side gets distant. If you listen it as a whole and look at the lyrics it displays a whole story and I think it’s so beautiful to see that in an album. Not that toxic relationships are beautiful no but they were telling a story with the songs as a whole

I remember a Seo Taiji & Boys song that talked about being a rebellious student. But I can't quite put my finger on it.
