This video was originally posted in September 2010, and this is a re-edited version that runs 2m 20s shorter than the original, with the usual trims to film clips and to tighten up the pacing. This has also been upscaled to HD, and has had noise reduction applied to reduce tape and camera noise. I think this is a really strong episode, although if I reviewed the film now, I think I'd try to be a little more sensitive with regards to Mary's character, even if she is a stalker. This has been re-posted to tie in with Ocean's 8, which opens in the US this week. Have fun!
@clearspira6 жыл бұрын
Do you mind elaborating on why you would be more sensitive to Mary's character in hindsight? If we're honest... would you be suffering from just a small amount of double standards here? If a man was acting this way to a woman he would be in the eyes of most to be irredeemable, creepy, dangerous etc. and you have had similar male characters in other reviews that you have felt no remorse in targeting. But because she is female its suddenly "oh, I would be a little more sensitive regarding her if I made this today". If Mary was Marty, the words #MeToo would be following his name and you know it. She is crazy and don't feel bad for saying it.

Sandra Bullock accepted her Razzie for this in person and scolded and shamed the audience for daring to hate this piece of shit. She refuses to admit that its a bad movie to this day, I don't understand why she's like that. But the same year she won the Oscar for The Blind Side, also known as "White Guilt: The Movie". So maybe she just doesn't give a shit, you know? In any case, I once tried to watch this and I just couldn't get through it. Roger Ebert said in his review "It's not much fun to laugh at a crazy person" regarding Sandra's character in this thing, and he was right. This movie isn't funny at all, it's a method of torture. Making light of people with obvious mental illness is wrong, and that's the major problem I have with this thing!
@T5ComixCartoonz6 жыл бұрын
For some reason, this movie reminds me vaguely of "Nurse Betty"...only difference is that in THAT movie the female protagonist really was mentally damaged, having been the victim of stressed-induced hallucinations and amnesia. The movie also played that fact straight and didn't try and play her up as being some kind of extra special snowflake.

Honestly, knowing that Bullock produced this movie and knowing that before it came out, she got stalked by a couple of obsessed fans in two separate and crazy incidents (including the fact that the first stalker stalked her across several states), really makes me wonder if this was an attempt at trying to put personal stress and trauma into a light-hearted comedy. No wonder it felt so off and came across so sinister instead of funny or heartwarming.

Funny enough this movie has ALOT in common with "What about Bob" with how Mary stalks Steve and Steve is made out to be the bad guy for rejecting her and LEGIT being afraid for his life! It's like "what if we made What about Bob a romcom, but Bob is a chick and Leo is the love interest" (I mean Steve has that in common where like Dr. Leo, any of their LEGIT concerns about Bob/Mary are dismissed and their made out to be jerkasses who at the end give in only because they've given up by that point and accepted the world refuses to hear their concerns and might as well get on "the winning team!")
@socklock19578 ай бұрын
@@paulman34340 There is a big difference though; in What About Bob, Bob is well-meaning and just socially awkward and naive but he learns to bond with Leo’s family and Leo doesn’t want him around just because he annoys him and Bob gives him no good reason why he should stay away, not that this is a problem with the movie itself because it’s still funny. All About Steve not only is PAINFULLY UNFUNNY, but also shows Mary as some delusional lunatic who’s obsessed with her and Steve being together forever and there’s no reason given as to why we should like her in the first place, Steve has every right to stay away from her as far as I’m concerned.

Well,in true retrospect here-SHE COULD HAVE been one of those..girls who've been either rejected and ridiculed constantly when she was a young girl in school (either due to potentially/possibly A learning disorder-not specifically autism,but something roughly like it or similar that may or may not be related to it or not-or probably caused by her being/becoming who she is during her childhood and living in/through her family's upbringing) that might've-or MAY'VE-been bullied a lot and thus kinda lives with this ditzy,manic-dream pixie girl persona that she uses to cover it -the years of bullying,harassment and/or torment she may of secretly suffered in the past-up in the meantime,in which she acts a bit differently than many-others, including the so-called point of her immediately rushing into her relationship with Steve/stalking Steve cross-country/state order to fall for him without any second reason or complete sense of thought entirely (as I'm kinda/completely paraphrasing buddy's point in the video up here,though)-I could also think that on top of this,that Mary here..might also apparently has (or has HAD) commitment issues,regardless of it as being either severe or non-severe in-nature...possibly shown how/by in the scenes with the school kids,most of her colleges and well obviously enough,Steve and his plan to get the hell away from her while during his news-filming gig attempts,for example..?! Try thinking about Mary in the same way you would watch and/or describe the character of elder Cunningham from The Book of Mormon musical or similar characters (and most real-life people right-here) are consistently being pushed around/told to go away/that they're always considered annoying and you'll practically/BASICALLY get what I'm meaning/trying to mean here,unfortunately-so..hmm...?! I don't know if you take requests, but do you think you could review the 2008 movie Made of Honor? A lot of people like it, but I am baffled as to why. It's clinched and really makes me angry. The guy is a playboy (he changes women faster and more often than his underwear), but we're supposed sympathize with him because he fell in love with his "best friend" (whom he didn't stay in much contact with) and she's getting married. I saw no chemistry between them and she told him off about his garbage behavior ONCE, and I guess he was hooked. She asks him to be her maid of honor (the wedding is less than a month away in Ireland). She's pretty vapid herself, though, snubbing their dressings and traditions. They try to make the fiancé (Colin) look horrid because of his upbringing and family, but I was on his side. Stuff happens, traditions are neglected and the main gal falls for the main guy the NIGHT BEFORE THE WEDDING (or realizes that she always loved him), and dumps Colin ON THE WEDDING DAY to be with MG. As far as I'm concerned, they deserve each other. The only consolation I got was that they beat the crap out of the guy before the leads return to the States. Now, it may be completely possible that I'm remembering this movie wrong (I only saw it once over 4 years ago), but it didn't sit well with me and left a sour taste in my mouth. If there was a deeper message to this movie, it went totally over my head.

This review is pretty good for an odd yet sad movie. It’s comes across as Satire. The enemies being the media, perceptions about others and relationships. Some commentators must have missed parts of this movie or lack emotion intelligence. So She was played by assholes when all she knew was rejection, damn her father even makes fun of her. Maybe her enabling parents give her the space to use unhealthy ways of coping skills. The funny part is how Ken Jeong’s character is the one with good morals. He sees Mary for who she is the Smart girl in the red boots. Mary is over the top authentic and as creepy as some perceive her actions her intentions aren’t bad. She’d been played by all the wrong people, made fun of and used by the creepy anchor who has ego issues. Steve is the Idiot here and Mary’s awkwardness is likely a result of being judged by others who misunderstand her. Seems her character is someone who’ knows what it’s like to be told they’re not good enough. Those people learn to survive by doing their best so she’s socially awkward many are some are kind and others take the road of being an asshole to cover their awkwardness. The end of the movie shows she’s intelligent, kind and caring unlike her costars. The way the movie was advertised as a comedy about a stalker is disturbing. It’s hard to follow at first yet by the end it shows how people judge others based on one person’s point of view, Steve and the anchor asshole show their stupidity and lack of emotional intelligence by portraying Mary as the enemy. This movie was about making a mockery out of someone who didn’t deserve it. She’s the better person than they are.

Well everybody is just way too serious and can't just watch a movie and have fun anymore. I thought this movie was hilarious! Is it a perfect film? No! But it does what it's supposed to which is make me laugh my ass off and enjoy the time I spent watching it. It's just a feel-good comedy. Lighten up everyone.

8:50-8:57 Because screw differing opinions, right? If a film sucks, that's because it's bad, and anyone who likes it is wrong.

I want Sandra Bullock to reprise this role in a stalker thriller as the insane horny woman obsessed with crossword puzzles, name of the movie? 4 Letters Across. Yeah... Self high five.

Y'know, I was thinking that, too. But it doesn't even get that quite right! People with autism tend to have a greater sense of empathy, if a relative lack of social perceptivity. If Steve was that visibly uncomfortable around her, even she'd most likely pick up on that and leave him alone. But yeah, that idea has promise, but more as a drama. Show someone with moderate autism trying to lead a normal life, including having a relationship. I think "Mary" could work as someone who's sweet, but lacking in social skills. "Steve" would be a friend of hers who knows who sensitive she is and tries to let her down easy after a bad date. Partly because she didn't get the hint, partly out of desperation to 'be functional', she'd still think there's potential for their relationship to blossom when there isn't. She'd also be much less aggressively creepy.
