Originally posted in June 2010, this is a re-edited version that has been tightened slightly to shorten some of the film clips. This is still probably one of my favourite episodes, and showing how strong it was originally, the edits have only removed 38 seconds, compared to some episodes that have lost far more. Enjoy!

The sexism in "Knocked Up" comes less from blunt school of "women are less worthy than men" and more from the "all women want is responsibility and all men want is to have fun," so it actually is a rather unflattering look at both sexes, but the problem is: women are ALWAYS portrayed in those movies as absolute killjoys who only want to marry you so you can never see your friends or ever have fun again. I don't think it ruins the movie and doesn't stand out to me personally any more than their absolutely gutless refusal to even entertain the word "abortion." After all: you want it to play in the boonies where people are so overly sensitive. And because they won't have that talk, Heigl's character comes off as completely insane, willing to risk her career for a man she barely knows who ALSO doesn't want a baby!

Why the shocked disbelief when the chef says his dish contains duck and not chicken? You'd think he said it contained rat. Lots of restaurants serve duck. Duck a l'orange and Peking duck are popular dishes. You can buy duck in the grocery store. Duck hunting is a popular sport. I'm absolutely at a loss to understand why this movie thinks there's anything wrong or unusual about eating duck. Did the writers just assume their audience was so ignorant that they'd never heard of anyone eating duck before? Weird.

Ok, this movie is depressing, but think about it. When you look closely, this movie's message is actually that women aren't supposed to be straight, naturally. I mean, if women seek romance and men are incapable of loving and caring and just pretend to, women have no reason to fall for men. They can't give them what they want at all! Therefore, no woman should be attracted to a man. That such a conservative movie can hold a message like this is very funny to me. xD
@JanetStarChild6 жыл бұрын
If the heteronormativity wasn't constantly hammered into everyone's psyche by western/Christian culture and society, most women would have romantic relationships with women. Our closest genetic relatives, the bonobos, are matriarchal and very pro-gay.
@MysticDragonPrincess6 жыл бұрын
I like the way you think. Most of my ex boyfriends were exactly like the character in this movie. I don't doubt that there ARE caring guys out there, but unfortunately the clique gives the lazy, selfish ones an excuse not to try and to gaslight women into thinking its normal to be treated like an object and not be given any kind of romantic attention outside of the bedroom. Yes, society tells us that its good for men to be romantic because it will result in better and more frequent sex for him, but it shouldn't be that way. The one happy relationship I did have was with a guy who was nice to me because he wanted to be, because he actually cared about me, not because of whatever sexual favours he was going to get in return.
@wannabehistorian3715 жыл бұрын
@JanetFunkYeah No, they’re more bisexual than anything. And I’m sorry, but most people are straight. I’m a straight woman, BTW. Because unlike bonobos we are mainly monogamous, and we also need to reproduce. Hence, 90% of humans are straight.

I must agree, look at what they did to Chris Hemsworth in the new Ghostbusters. If they genders had been switched people would be outraged, and rightly so. Sending the message that it's okay for a man to be objectified.

I'm pretty sure the people in Hollywood wanted to make both genders equals but figured that idea is boring so they rely on days-old stereotypes to make things interesting. They made it interesting alright...In really wrong ways like that new Ghostbusters movie you mentioned.

Ashley Co that's literally the joke. It's making fun of the stereotype of the dumb (always female) secretary.

Background checking your date (a stranger who could be a psychopath) is shrewish and uptight? Is she supposed to let herself sit there with a potential crazy guy or something?

There's a difference between that and the fact she invasively brings up his credit rating and so forth.
