Bad News Brown is pound for pound one of the toughest pro wrestlers of all time. Bad News won a bronze medal for Judo in the 1976 Olympics before later emerging as a professional wrestler. Allen Coage also won Gold in the Pan American Games for 1967 & 1975. After his judo career was winding down, Allen's coach encouraged him try professional wrestling so he started up with Antonio Inoki in Japan.

This is one [hillbilly sharecropper] who loved the way BadNews wrestled, Foleys army was the best group of heels in the business and the reason the Pavillion was packed every week at that time.BadNews, Honky Tonk, Dynamite Kid, and J.R Foley as a manager it was great to watch on t.v but it was spectacular to see in person. As kids growing up in Calgary this was something we could afford and you were entertained every week so glad I got to see him in person.

Allen did win the gold at the Pan-Ams in the heavyweight division, but Doug Rogers went on to win the open weight division to avenge the loss in that competition. (Doug Rogers was a Canadian who trained under Kimura, the judoka who easily defeated Helio Gracie, breaking his arm twice with ude garami---later named the "Kimura" by the Gracie's.) Bad News was obviously a serious judo competitor to have a victory over Rogers. (There's a short documentary called Judoka about Rogers on KZbin.)

Do you know how well these people knew him? For years I've read snippets about him training in Japan and not liking the Judo politics in the USA, but that's all. I read that he was writing a book before he passed, but I guess didn't finish. If any of the people you know have more insight into this man's life, I would greatly appreciate it.

Bad news always came off as such a good guy, even if he was tough and blunt about things. And he’s the real deal. Gold medalist (bronze in the Olympics) Judoka and trained wrestling under the great Antonio Inoki. Not a guy you’d want to shoot fight/wrestle

Back in late 1980s I saw him vs Jake the Snake in Miami. Bad News was getting the better of Jake when suddenly a teenage looking kid got a little too into seeing Jake getting had and rushed into the ring. He attempted to open Jake's bag to let the snake, Bad News summarily grabbed this stupid kid and tossed him out of the ring. Security finished the clean up by scooping up the kid and carrying him out of the arena.
