My Corgi has been having breathing / nasal issues, which we're still trying to diagnose and I'm so afraid of a similar story happening to her. I'm crying so hard right now. She's turning 8 years old next month and you and Gatsby were a major influence in me getting a Corgi. I'm so insanely sorry for you both and wish nothing but health and success. We caught her cancer too late and made the decision to just give her the best life she can with her remaining time. Seeing Gatsby so happy and energetic is extremely comforting. Unfortunately his nasal cancer treatment with radiotherapy is not curative. It will stave off the cancer for the time being and hopefully buy him more time but it is eventually likely to recur and unlikely to be responsive to further radiotherapy the second time round since the nasal cancer cells that survive will have mutated to become radio-resistant. By the sound of it, it has metastasised to his adrenals

My advice, Ryen, is to concentrate on the good. All the happy times you've had together and WILL HAVE together. Believe in Gatsby that he will come through this second surgery with flying colors. Yes, he will have to be on medication forever, but that's true for lots of people and animals as well. And we know that you will ensure Gatsby receives the medications he needs. I lost my childhood best friend 5 years ago from a cancerous tumor that ruptured on his spleen so seeing you go through this is horrible. The day we found out about the tumor was the same day he died. It was horrendous. I am so glad you are at least able to extend his time with you. Every decision you have made has made a huge difference for Gatsby and he is SO much happier than he was when he was first diagnosed. I don’t think you were naive, I think it is hope. And hope is very important, especially in times like this. I have loved and survived many fur babies and their short lives means I will likely survive many more, and it never gets easier, but at the same time that will never stop me from inviting new love into my life. Every horse I touch is touched by the horses that came before them. Every dog I love is launching off from where the last love left me. Doesn’t make it less painful, but does keep me going forward. My 13 year corgi girl was taken by cancer recently. And that love is forever a part of me. The pain is only representative of the amount of love we shared.

I understand the pain of watching a beloved pet struggle with illness, as I too once had a faithful Dalmatian who brought me endless joy for 15 years before succumbing to cancer. Though it may be difficult, I encourage you to stay strong and keep hope in your heart. Remember that even in the hardest moments, there is beauty to be found. And while it's important to prepare for the worst, it's equally important to hold onto the possibility of recovery and the joy that comes with it. Dear Ryan, I have watched you with my Mom and Oma since you got Gatsby. I grew up watching him and you, lol! We watched you in 2020 and then we got a doggy too. We use some of your tips with her and she woofs when she sees Gatsby on the TV. Our rescue Corgi needed monthly injections for Addison’s disease. He loved going to the vet for the extra attention and extra treats. Praying Gatsby’s surgery will go well and that the injections and daily meds will get back to full Gatsby mod again. I hope a closer vet can help with the monthly injections and med refills. That might help reduce your stress a little.
