You should really ride it off road before doing any mods. At the very least it gives you a baseline for if your mods are helping or making the bike worse. Also, if you want it to be street legal why didn’t you buy the street legal version?

The manual break in is bs, they tell you to take it easy so YOU don't get hurt and sue them-its not about the engine getting hurt. Many successful race teams do a hard break in, warm it up and start doing moderate pulls right away. Make sure you use lots of engine breaking to slow down after a pull, the vacuum inside the engine helps clean metal shavings off the cylinder wall. Loading the engine hard is the best way to get the rings to seat well
@CollinMac96
@CollinMac96 6 жыл бұрын
Also bikes are held at redline for quite some time in the factory. I usually just follow the break in because it will take me about 700mi to get fully confident with a bike

@JaredHIll13 6 жыл бұрын
Alistair B, I agree...A VERY competent engine builder once told me that you break in the engine like ur going to use it... his were broke in on the dyno, quick warm up at varied low rpms then wot pulls.... same guy won the Mopar Muscle magazine engine build-off in the early 2000's... he just might have known what he was talkin about lol.

Warp 9 is junk. You're right in that 5 inch rear is too wide for the YZ450. You need to go with a 4.5 inch rear. Excel rim laced to a Talon hub is a great set up.

I want tubeless though. You can't change tubes on a street tire like you can with a dirt tire on the road. If you get a flat with a sumo tube you will have to get a tow. I know you can use the 3m super tape to get tubeless but I hear it can fail.
@Bruce.Wallace
@Bruce.Wallace 6 жыл бұрын
@@CycleCruza - That's true. Do you carry a tubeless repair kit on your Blade everywhere you go ?? And how many times have you used it ?? They are hardly quick and easy to use, and if you get anything bigger than a nail you're gonna need a tow anyway. I think you're overthinking it.
@ILoveNeeps
@ILoveNeeps 6 жыл бұрын
It's worth giving the 3M tape conversions a shot IMO as the pressure inside of the wheel will force the tape to seal against the spoke nipples. Worst case scenario you can just refit the tube if you encounter any issues.

1. Buy the Alpinas 2. Buy a chain without O-Rings DID Chain, they are alot thinner and the maintenance is higher but you wont ride it alot (as the wr) 3. You can get a spacers for the sprocket which helps to get the chain a bit more away from the tire 4. you can offcenter a spoked wheel to the right side If you do all of this or atleast offcenter or buy spacers for the wheel and a thinner chain you will have 0 problems with chain rub.

I made a change of plans, going with Warp 9 spoke wheels (blue rim, blue hubs, blue spokes, black nipples) and I will make it tubeless by using the 3M Extreme sealing tape method and will use 90 degree stems. From what I hear this works great. I will not only save a lot of money this way but I will get the rims within a week. Alpinas take 6 weeks and will be more than double the cost.

I have a Warp 9 multi issue story from 1st hand experience. Put a new rear on my Honda CRF 450 flat tracker, kept breaking spokes. I replaced the entire wheel with stock Honda spokes and never broke another spoke. I was very happy with it until I loaned it to my son who mounted it on the Honda CRF 450 moto bike. He came home with a hub with a bunch of bearings that were loose inside the hub ripping everything inside all to crap. So you getting what you pay for is a fact to live by.

I’m totally confused with what your doing with this bike. You could have got a Husky or KTM with emissions and if you wanted more hp there are different avenues to go through which isn’t much work or buy a Beta and you’re good to go. All legal anywhere in the US, what you did seems ass backwards and you can’t ride it on the street in some areas.

Cool but I wander how different the swingarm is compared to 2019 is from the 2007? I hear the swingarms got narrower on the newer bikes... Either way I don't feel like waiting 2 months for wheels to come from Italy. I'm just getting the Warp 9 spokes and will do the tubeless 3M tape mod.

not sure why lotta guys on here hatin on the Warp-9's , I ride with a large group of supermoto's out here in SoCal and over 80% of us on WR's CRF's , KTM's etc all ride with Warp-9's spoke rims. I personally have 5" rear's with a chain block/guard to prevent rubbing on my 07' WR450F. plus Warp 9's have good warranty plan.

Just drop the rear from 50 teeth to 45 or 43 and it should make it better for street use it shouldn't compromise the dirt ability too much if you still have a 13 front. I have 14/45 on my DRZ 400 and it does great on road and off

Just to add some fair warning...sometimes the DMV is a real pain in the ass about registering anything classified as something other than a "motorcycle" (often MCY), even if you put the street-legal accessories on there and follow the rules to a "T". You can always register in Vermont if Ohio gives you the runaround.

iron monkey LMAO! Not hardly... And my success in business proves the exact opposite of your marshmallow test theory, however, aside from that, the KTM IS SIMPLY A BETTER DIRT BIKE, and by the time he gets done, he’ll have the same amount of money in this one, WEEKS of time blown, and it STILL wont be legal in all 50 states, and it STILL won’t be able to keep up with the KTM. And I know because I own the KTM500 EXC-F, along with 13 other bikes, including a WR like he just put in the shop, AND I’ve also owned several YZs... Just knowledge and experience, and 43 years of riding, and owning over 30 bikes... And I’m primarily a Yamaha guy. I’ve always had more of them than anything, but when it comes to the pinnacle of dirt performance, KTM is a next-level machine... Ditto with Husky (same factory), but Husky has a thinner dealership support base in most states than KTM...

it is still your experience and preference, KTM may be a better bike for that purpose but for CC is all about dealership support and reliability, I stay with Yamaha because they have been #1 in reliability for a long time, there are dealerships everywhere near me, and for the bikes I have, I only have to do very little maintenance and the one time I had an issue, the fix was free of charge (dead battery) no they didn't charge it, they gave me a new one.... so to each his own but if KTM had bigger dealership support maybe he would have bought that one, that still doesn't make KTM as reliable as Yamaha, and finally, you can mod any vehicle to be better than others, in other words, he can mod that Yamaha to be unbeatable by a KTM in the same class modded as well, it is just how much money and time you want to spend to get better stats. At the end of the day it is all about having fun, there is always going to be someone better than you.

Measure the distance between the chain and the other side of the swingarm exactly 8.5 inches up from the axle, if it's less than 5 inch, you probably wont fit alpina, the wider the tire the more you can lean, ideally you want to get a 160 width tire on there at least, they might even fit on a 4.5 inch tire, but I dont know, I run the stock 5.5 inch on my aprilia sxv 550 for 180 tires. You might have to cut off some rubber from your tire like Saraazh did, but trust me the wider the better it's worth it.
@Foredore
@Foredore 6 жыл бұрын
@tom tom it depends a lot on the tire, and how steep the angle is, a wider tire with a steep angle will get you to a low lean angle smoother than a thinner one will, but for his yz he needs to try to get 160 tires to fit, because that's where 90% of the supermoto tire selection is at
@Foredore
@Foredore 6 жыл бұрын
@tom tom Maybe I mis spoke, a wider tire doesn't lean you further over necessarily, but it does provide more traction while over and is smoother because of extra surface area and the added suspension of the increased inner tire volume, which is to say, combined with a supermoto that is as torquey as my aprilia or any big single, it is an added advantage in the corners at the cost of tire weight, which slightly decreases acceleration. I'd say definitely for the streets go as wide as he can because the streets are dirty and full of potholes, which a wider tire is going to be less affected by the gravel and bumps on the road, again, because of tire surface area on the ground, and inner tire air volume. If he were racing track I'd say again anywhere between 150 and 170 is best, 160 being the most common, that's what the racers use, and I'm sure they have good reason.

Wouldn’t the WR250R be a better Supermoto platform? I mean it’s got a bombproof engine that can handle sustained riding on the road, you’d just need new wheels. I’d seriously just keep the YZ for the dirt man.

Had a yammie mechanic tell us street legaling the 450’s isnt a good idea at all, he claimed that motor is not built for the street and wont take it, the bike it built for trails/tracks & not meant for the steady rpm of the street.
@CycleCruza
@CycleCruza 6 жыл бұрын
Actually the yz450fx is a cross country bike, same category as the wr450f, which is meant for high rpm runs on open tracks. They use these bikes in the baja races. It's not a motocross bike, has a motocross engine but set up for both. Basically, it's a unadulterated wr450f with a little stiffer suspension. Everybody and their brother has a wr450f sumo with no issues. In Austraila, yamaha sells the wr450r street legal.

Sumo is just a dual sport with street suspension brakes and tires. A dual sport is more tailored to dirt so you will get some knobbies smaller brakes and soft suspension for bumps. CC. Supermoto's are awesome. You won't want to ride your yz in the dirt after your first supermoto blast. You may want to stiffen the suspension. The WR is stiffer from the factory. You'll have to ride it then decide. Excell rims, eagle hubs.

I think you're overthinking the whole tube thing. If you put in heavy duty tubes and don't drop the pressure too low, you'll be fine. You can still jump the bike and ride up staircases (I do it all the time) with a regular tubed spoke wheel.

For the love of God, go with a "clip" master link chain. Dirt bikes are about as harsh as you can get on a chain and they all come that way for a reason. Ease of cleaning, rehearing etc..., also on my YZ I made into a SM, I went with the 5" rear so I can use slicks. You will get chain rub!! It will scallop the tire. If you dont mind that then go for it, but think logical. If you will not be "backing it in" where you are really sliding the rear at extreme lean angles. It pointless to go with a 5" rear. Also. It is very wise to run 2 chains. 1 for SM 1 for moto or a dirt wheel. The SM wheel is a 17 so the rear sprocket will be 44-46ish. And dirt will be 48-51 depending on what riding you do. The ratio between the two requires 2 chains. Just dont skimp on the quality. Get an ERT or even an X-ring but they do have more drag.
@CycleCruza
@CycleCruza 6 жыл бұрын
Alpine says the 5.0 will fit without modification on the YZ. They sponsor pro sumo races and supply wheels to pro riders. Their website even lists the 5.0 for a 2018 ya450f. We'll see. I will use a narrow enduro chain. I might do two chains.
@OGPokey151
@OGPokey151 6 жыл бұрын
CycleCruza yes it fits but when the chain moves it goes over and scallops. I had wheel custom built for my YZ. It will scallop but it will "FIT"
@OGPokey151
@OGPokey151 6 жыл бұрын
CycleCruza btw they run slicks and the width is different than DOT tires, so a 160 DOT will measure usually measure wider than say a 165 slick (in most cases) but it's not the end of the world. It's a major pain in the ass for tire swaps. You need to remove the chain guide remove the axle suspend the wheel push it all forward remove the rear caliper then you can remove the wheel all while trying to not scratch the rim. It's not like pull the wheel off on a normal MX bike or your WR. A 5" is great for racing but if your aren't, most likely you will regret it. But they are sexy as hell
