I venture out in bad weather to enjoy some landscape photography with Simon Baxter. The conditions are sub-par and it feels like everything is against us, but I always say that you have to be in it to win it and more often than not I will experience regret if I choose not to go out because of bad weather. Woodland photography is difficult, but that's why it is so enjoyable, however not every photo shoot results in a good image as I show in this video :)

That was one of my favourite videos of yours in all the years I’ve been watching. Your intro talking about regret was perfect! And as an ex-pat Brit living abroad I often miss those wet and messy adventures in the woodland. It doesn’t matter that you didn’t get an ideal image, it’s the adventure and exploration that counts. It’s also so refreshing to watch a KZbin channel on photography with someone that actually takes photos (and sometimes fails) instead of all those channels that bang on about gear all the time with no photos to show for it. Keep up the great work!

Hi Thomas. I feel your pain - I've had two fails this week. I went into the Central Beacons on Sunday evening and it clouded over while the light on the coast was perfect. Got up at 4:00 this morning to drive across the border to photograph the Wye near Monmouth and after climbing a hill for 40 mins couldn't get a clear shot because the woodland had grown so much. Gutted !! What I'm doing now? Watching your vlog then checking Clear Outside to see if there's any chance of a shoot this weekend. Cracking video (as usual) - glad you didn't drop into the abyss !!

I very much enjoyed that, Tom. It's interesting to see you tackle the challenge of one of my local spots and also fun to watch you struggle with the terrain - I love trudging through woodland undergrowth in search of the next best shot :-D I think my episodes from there will be out over the next 2 weekends (hopefully! Definitely maybe!)

My view is that of yours: landscape photography (both in the large and the small) is really a solo experience you have to immerse yourself into in order to focus on the environment and capture it from your viewpoint on the schedule of the subject, not your schedule. thought-provoking video on photography per usual. Great work.

Good work, it shows the challenges of reality, not just the plumbs. And it provided good information on shooting thoughts for that kind of landscape image. I have this one tree I like to shoot over and over at different times of the year. I like the tree, what can I say. Personally a great image of a fabulous looking mountain can be a challenge getting there, a challenge to get the right weather and sky and time of day and position of the sun etc. But it is the more mundane that makes me work in other ways, it kind of forces me to think like I am shooting film and work more slowly and think more, and worst case scenario it exercises the mind. Good work! Best wishes!

Most days of looking for the ‘shot’ are appreciated by just experiencing the environment. Even if I don’t get a keeper, it’s still a great day. BTW, recently took delivery of my TH 2020 Calendar, it’s a reminder of what excellence of craft looks like! Can’t wait till January to put it up.

I have to say that I was worried that this might be the last Thomas Heaton video we would see for quite some time. That hillside looked mighty sketchy. You had me thinking, and I have to agree that I don't recall a time that I was ever sorry that I got up early in nasty weather for a photo shoot. There has always been something that I got out of it, even if I didn't get a good photo. Thanks for that reminder.

Because lately I've seen a lot of you feature in each other's videos quite a lot, for instance, you in Gavin Hardcastle's video, this one with Simon Baxter. And then there's the one with you, James Popsys, Gavin and someone else, (whose name escapes me, and whose, name I will probably instantly remember when finish typing this comment!) Oh, and by the way, I don't know whether to commend and congratulate you on your determination to photograph the Rowan tree, or to think you are completely bonkers even attempting it, risking life and limb for the shot! Hello Thomas, I am a first-time poster. I am an anatomic/clinical pathologist with a subspecialty in cytopathology and am an amateur photographer with little to no interest in making photography a business. However, I do have a question for you. But before I ask you this question I just want to share the level of education in the sciences I have undertaken (in the USA). Bachelor of Arts (4 years post High School). Master's Degree in Biology (2 years in addition to the Bachelor of Arts). Medical School (4 years in addition to Bachelor of Arts). Pathology Residency (5 years in addition to Medical School) and finally a Fellowship in Cytopathology (1 year in addition to Residency). Now, I know that that level of education is extensive. Of course, it does not provide me the knowledge of everything (LOL). But I do have a working knowledge of how science and research work. In all your travels over the last decade, have you noticed a change in the general climate? You may have not paid much attention to that but nonetheless, I wanted to ask :). Btw, I do believe the scientist consensus on climate change. Just wondering about your take on it. Thank you, Sincerely, Alex.

You need the app, "What three words." You could have sent Simon the three words describing your location, if things went really badly he'd would have been able to start from where you were. No guessing. Or you send it as a matter of course to Mrs H. Just a text message, it will go when you have coverage.

I feel a bit bummed about the UK going bonkers too. I get how hard you work in wading for hope (as we do). I have not taken a picture for a while - and a part of it is to be aware of news and watch the British left as a democratic fact. Myself as Norwegian and Oxbridge guy and stuff - I feel uneasy. It itches me what goes on. It itches me what goes on in Swansea and London. I feel a bit empty due to what goes on in the islands. Because to take a picture should come from a point of joy. what goes on is not joy. So the narrative is changing to do it "despite".
