This is very important. I remember when I would go slightly flat on high notes because of tension and poor vowel tuning my teachers would mash the key on the piano and make a cringe-like expression in order to prompt me to correct the pitch. This was extremely damaging to my moral. I thought I was tone deaf (when we are slightly flat due to poor vowel tuning/tension we often can't hear it for some reason).IT'S NOT AN AUDITORY ISSUE YOU CLUELESS WANNABE VOICE TEACHERS, IT'S A TECHNICAL ONE.

Your story is exactly the same as many others that I've heard. No one wants to sing off key all the time and a voice teacher's job is to help you sing better, right? But as you discovered, it's not as simple as hearing a note played or sung and then you echoing that same note back. You're already struggling to sing on tune, so what makes a singing teacher think that his/her pitch cues are magically going to produce the desired results that the student hasn't been able to produce up until that point? Tensions will definitely made it hard to adjust for pitch and register. Deal with the tensions first (including their root causes), and then better intonation will follow. Order of operations.

@@singwisevocals exactly! On a side note, why are we sometimes unable to hear tension or bad vowel tuning related pitch inaccuracies? I heard that it happens because the vocal folds have actually stretched to the appropriate length, so the brain tells us we are singing the correct pitch.

This is wonderful. It just proves exactly what I told my friend 3 years ago when she told me to start working on pitch: "I can't work on pitch yet because I'm not comfortable with hitting notes in general. I'm gonna focus on technique first until it's easier for me to sing." Unfortunately, my teacher back then thought otherwise, pushing me to hit an F4 on the piano even though I was practically shouting at a C4, then complaining about how flat I was. After I learned how to blend head and chest voice correctly two months ago, 60-70% of my pitch issues went away. These days it's mostly about me accidentally singing the wrong note or just not having studied the song properly yet.

For me it's just a lack of ear training. I wish more teachers on youtube covered that aspect rather than just mechanical issues :/

Thank you Karen for your insightful video's. I'm still having problems matching the shape of my throat to the pitch and vowel type in which I sing. Should the epiglottis always be gently lifted? Another teacher said that it should. Whenever I work on a recording I seem to struggle to unify all my singing into one identifyable characteristic sound... Any advice?

I just started singing and got told my voice nice but my pitch off by a singer I know and now I'm determined and focused on that and I been doubting my self to sing but I have a lot of keep going and try my best motivation I can here pitches when playing a piano or guitar and I know if I'm even flat a bit I'm proper confused trying to listen to get the low notes and high notes correct in the song I cant even express my self and enjoy while singing anymore but like I say I'm very deterred to practice I have now got a teacher only had a first session he were trying to get me to learn half notes instead of dropping or going up a whole note and when I sing I'm always sharp in every key when in my comfortable speaking relaxed voice but when I try lower my voice to be on exct major keys it'im not relaxed then

Great video! I feel like I have this problem a lot with pitch intonation even after 3 years of lessons but I have a feeling it has more to do with my posture and being tense or incorrect placement rather then being tone deaf cause I can hit the pitch accuracy most of the time when all is aligned correctly and can mimic the note that is being played . I was wondering if you give me a little bit of feedback on one of my singing videos on my KZbin on my pitch as I’m very self conscious of it and am trying to improve love to hear what you think it mean so much to me.

Darren D She mentioned doing sirens, tongue trills, moaning and groaning sounds. But Karynn, we would love to see you do a video where you show what scales you use to practice on and where you show us each of these exercises individually.

I can sing Rosinni and Mozart runs on pitch, but when switch to singing contemporary music I tend to be off pitch... so ... is the root cause flexibility? Do we need to completely retrain ourselves to sing pop music?

is it normal when in order to get good cord closure and get rid of breathiness I tend to really pack up my lips, I don't know how to explain this, but I'm just sort of bringing every part of my mouth together , making it smaller than it actually is and leaving a tiny gap so that , regardless of how good my tone sounds that way, at least I can sing high notes more freely and I don't feel like I have to go beyond my abilities to get to a certain pitch. I've seen some vocal coaches saying that your mouth has to be wide open, but for me, that techique only feels unnatural to me
@chrismartinez1445 жыл бұрын
The same phenomenon happens to me! I'm really interested in singing theory and my understanding of all of this is that it's just your body choosing its preferred muscle coordination in your voicebox (larynx)... which your voice "thinks" is easier to do if it changes your vowels... which is kinda strange. Yeah one weird thing about singing is that your whole vocal instrument is most definitely a *non linear system.* That is to say, like, some of the stuff you do with one part of your voice will affect other parts of your voice. What you talk about is a great example of this: increasing cord closure affects vowel shape sometimes. It's just a consequence of singing being the weird non linear system that it is. Also, you don't necessarily need to have a super open mouth to sing well. I mean, will having a somewhat closed mouth negatively affect you're singing? For me it generally doesn't. Some people say when they close their mouth a lot, they have a tendency to induce tension in their voice (like glottal tension specifically); other people don't have that problem. If that's your instinct to close your mouth when you get a healthy amount of cord closure, then it's probably not creating bad tension. And even if it were, I reckon you yourself would probably be able to tell. Yeah so long story short I say with confidence that it sounds like you don't have much to worry about. But you know I'm not a vocal coach or anything lol. Good luck singing friend!
