Hopefully I'm understanding this correctly: so, once we have breathed in fully, we have created a "subglottal overpressure." Next, while singing through a phrase, at a certain point, this pressure will drop, and in order to maintain a consistent sound, we need to allow our breathing apparatus (ribs and diaphragm) to contract inward. This will maintain that pressure in the subglottal region. We engage our abdominal/thoracic muscles to control that contraction, not to force it open for as long as possible. Does that sound right?

Hello! Thank you so so much for this video! I was just wondering how can I properly do inhalation, because I feel I am having those feelings that you described in the over-inhalation. Also, when you do the exhalation I suppose you have to do it quite quick if you are doing 5 or 6 seconds, right? Do you have to exhalate until you feel you are quite "empty"?

Hi - professional vocalist here! I have posture issues, as well as dyspraxia, hypermobility, interoception issues (I'm autistic), and I also have a tongue tie. I struggle with tongue tension to the point where it affects my neck, jaw and chest muscles - these exercises immediately helped me release and relax them! Thank you so much ❤

I too have struggled with harmony. I always used to gravitate toward the lead vocal. I played instruments, but only originally learned to sing lead parts Later on I found myself in band situations where I had to sing harmony, and it was tough breaking away from that melody line. I often found it easier after someone in the band would quit who was doing a certain line, to fall in and do their part because I had that part so ingrained from hearing it night after night. It's taken a great deal of work, and I still have trouble doing it on the fly, but I can do it at least. Great pointers!

Wow ... I feel like I learned more about singing (intellectually, at least) in this video than a 4 year degree in classical voice and almost 40 years of being a hack singer. Having just taken early retirement from my IT career, I am eagerly absorbing as much knowledge as possible about singing to launch some retirement home gigs. This video is EXCELLENT and a great addition to my other training.

Speech pathologist and professional singer/ vocal coach here, applauding you for providing such a thorough and yet clear explanation of these matters! I often give a rather simplified version to my students/clients (as an introduction to a formant tuning activity). But if anyone expresses interest in a deeper dive, I'll now know to send them here!

Fantastic !! What a clear, clever and simple explanation of how to really understand the Farinelli exercise!! Thank you so much !! I would have just one question if possible : do you keep in the 3rd phase of the exercise as you exhale, the sides of the ribs slightely expended? Or should the ribs come back completely to the initial position they had before inhalation? Thank you again!! This video was such a tremendous help and have allowed me to reach the feeling of freedom while singing any aria, even the onee I used to fight with!!😊❤

Hey. Your videos are excellent. Thank you. Because I read a comment here I became a little unsure. May I ask why you are making fewer and fewer videos? That's such a pity. I hope KZbin or the comments here have not upset you in any way and you will stay with us for a long time with your exceptional, wonderful and instructive insights. 🙏🏻

Is this an exercise that will just help anyone's overall voice for singing? I'm a 66 year old man who isn't trying to become a true vocalist. But, I would like to be able to improve my voice to sing along while playing my guitar.

Your instruction and thoughts on vocal technique principles is par excellence! I haven't been able to engage with you or your teachings as much as I would like, I absolutely idolise you and what you communicate. The voice you write with (hah!) in your texts is authoritative and commands respect.

Any good books on thos subject? Im taking singing lessons for about 6 months as a near middle aged man and I am now very interested in the physics and biology of it. Would love to read through a few books on the subject.

Oh my gosh. I just went through 12 weeks of student teaching at the end of my degree and was sick for 9 weeks of that. I had RSV, Strep, RAD, and finally a cold with laryngitis and complete loss of my voice for at least 2.5 to 3 weeks solid. I finished on May 3rd, and it's July 20th. I still haven't recovered my full range and it's been scaring me to death. Listening to you with the airy onset, trying to get the note to come is exactly what I'm experiencing. My upper range is gone, I can't get those notes out, and if I do, it's because I'm straining. I do worry it'll never come back!

I wish I had have found my voice at a much younger age, think of all the extra range I would have! I'm in awe at your ability to convey the ideas and theory... It's got me to a place I can make the room resonate in chest, head, (one of two tones of) whistle registers. I might not make a polished sound but it sounds more of a pure tone than I have ever been prepared to hear from myself! My neighbours' lives will never be the same 😉-🎶

I remember having a cough that was so bad, that even when I thought about what I wanted to say aloud, BANG! I put myself on strict vocal rest, which made for a funny impromptu face game with the guest speaker in psychology class, an awkward "conversation" with a colleague, and substituting my voice with my viola in orchestra.

last week My son lost his high notes when he hit 13 years old out of nowhere, he used to hit all the notes in a steve-perry type of stuff and the day he was about to go and make his first street singing guitar show he suddenly couldnt sing high notes and he also started struggling with high notes and had the same problem at 3:17, i for sure know its not puberty since he had already changed voice before hitting 13 and he has the same voice as now
