They did the same match in NWA years earlier with Jimmy Garvin and Kevin Sullivan. Think there was also one in WCCW with Chris Adams. If the babyface is really over, the heel is really sneaky, and the match is fairly short, then the crowd gets into it, and it works. After that, it should not be attempted by anyone anywhere for 10 years.

I recently learned that the Punjabi Prison Match’s rules are so excessive because when they were developing the first one for GAB ‘06, they figured out the finish then worked backwards from there to make the rules. Apparently Pat Patterson and Undertaker spent a week brainstorming ideas, just tossing out whatever popped into their heads, and that’s how they came up with the whole “doors that only open once for 60 seconds” thing.

Yes, all they had to do is to simplify the rules, like instead of the doors opening for those god darn 60 seconds, if wrestlers have to manually open the door which is heavy and try to escape that, and if one escapes, another would be locked and he'll have to break the cage or escape by the smaller spaces of the first bamboo cages

I did have this one idea for a gimmick match I kind of wanted to float by someone in the industry, see what they made of it. Basically, it's a variaton on the 2/3 falls or Iron Man multifall concept. In order to win the match, you have to score two falls *in a row* over your opponent. Not got a name for it, but it does sound like something that could invite interesting psychology.

A Duece Match? That's what that's called I'm Tennis I think
@Drekal684
@Drekal684 Жыл бұрын
@@henri6207 The idea I had in my head was that it would be inspired by tennis in kayfabe, so that could work. Imagine a pair of wrestlers have been trading wins, and the authority figure comes out and compares it to watching a tennis match. He wants them to have a definitive win, once and for all and sets this up.
@FraserSouris
@FraserSouris Жыл бұрын
I think there’s potential. You could have a situation where a heel intentionally gets disqualified for the first fall using a low blow because he knows his opponent can’t get the second fall to capitalize. Perhaps the heel even gets a fall to reset the deuce. So you keep having situations where both wrestlers can trade falls via DQ to further hurt the opponent
@suntanironman
@suntanironman Жыл бұрын
An issue I see with this match type is that the person who losses the first fall would never have a chance to take the lead (while still continuing the match) because taking the lead after losing the first fall would mean instantly winning. Once the first fall happens, the winner of the first fall will always be up a fall or tied (until the match ends) and other competitor will always be down a fall or tied (until the match ends). There would never be an opportunity for the competitors to switch being up/down a fall (without the match instantly ending once the switch happens). And easy fix for this “Two Wins in a Row” match problem would be a “Win By Two” match (like tennis). Though when I say “fix” that is assuming what I just described as a problem is even a problem that needs fixing. What I just described as a problem could be exactly what you intended from your match type.
@jkakaqw
@jkakaqw Жыл бұрын
I feel like this match can only work if it’s a feud ender. Like having both wrestlers keep trading wins week after week, PPV after PPV and it’s a pattern where they’re so equal that they can’t be better than the other. The winner not only will get to pin them twice but prove for sure that they are better than the other wrestler

I don’t recall the buildup to the Zombie Lumberjack match, but it could work. Imagine the most obnoxious heel (ok, Miz, check), and it’s revealed in storyline that he has an irrational fear of zombies, possibly from watching movies as a child or something. So the baby face challenges the cocky heel to a lumberjack match, but he gets to pick the lumberjacks… the heel accepts, and the baby face announces that the zombies will serve as lumberjacks. They aren’t portrayed as real zombies, but everyone winks at the idea that they really are zombies just for the benefit of terrorizing the heel. Someone could’ve made this work at some point.

Honestly, I think Triple H vs D-Lo Brown was the best example of a blindfold match you can really get. I hate the "touch all four corners" strap match. They are always booked the exact same way, with one wrestler dragging or carrying the other to all four corners and not realizing the other person touched the corner after them. And then it's a race to touch the last corner. Regular strap matches can be great, like Punk/MJF and Piper/Valentine, but that one rule ruins them for me.

I also think touch all four corners variant is maybe stupid, it can stall if done poorly and what you commented. When I think of strap matches, I usually think of it like "escape to victory" variant where the straps would be much shorter and wrestlers have to escape the ring. this one can also make some compelling storylines like booking two big men will create a hoss fight if done correctly, and big man vs high flyer also has a great storyline, in which a big man heel has trapped a smaller, high flyer face to limit his high flying abilities and get a big man advantage over him.

Before the blindfold match at Wrestlemania 7, there's a shot of the guys adjusting their blindfolds and you can clearly see their hands through the mesh eye holes.

That stairs weight has reduced drastically since the Attitude era. I remember Kane once lifting them and JR saying they weighed over 500lbs. Stair technology must have come some way since those days.

Awesome stuff. By the way, what's the song that starts upon introduction of WCW Junkyard Match (15:56)? I've heard it multiple times in your past videos, but I don't think I've heard it in any WCW or WWF shows. Is it maybe a custom mix?

The Coal Miner's Glove match was actually a big deal in the territory days, when ladder matches weren't a thing, blood flowed like wine and most people in attendance knew what a coal miner's glove looks like.

Surprised the Orton/Wyatt match at Wyatt's house wasn't on the list. Match had to take place at Wyatt's house but end in the ring (?), and when Orton got there the house was LOCKED (???).

Brawl for all, anything "On a pole", evening gown, hell, pretty much any WWF womens gimmick match from the 80s or 90's, loser gets their head shaved, scaffold match, backlot brawl.....so many terrible gimmick matches

Bucky bottle on a pole match. It was wild drunken and rainy Wrestlemania Sunday night in Glasgow, Scotland...2 best friends decided to duke it out in a living room with more classic finishers than a full1998 PPV. One man ended up with an egg shaped lump on his head...it was not me

I don't know about the rest of you but the "Strange Bedfellows" matches at Raw Roulette never hit the mark with me. You had 2 guys that were feuding and then they were tagging with generic lower midcarder #1 in a match that didn't make no sense even for the undercarders. HBK & Mr Kennedy vs Charlie Haas and Trevor Murdoch springs to mind. This was January 2008. Other than "ooo anything can happen at the rumble" this was a 6 minute match that served no purpose

If you do another video you need to put WCW’s “4 Way Tag Team Caged Heat Match” on the 7/24/2000 episode of Nitro. It’s easily the dumbest, most convoluted match of all time! It was so convoluted that it seemed no one including the commentators, ref and wrestlers understood the rules of this match. Must be seen to be believed

You could've just made this a compilation on TNA from its start to the twenty-teens. Lol. A good gimmick match either allows the babyface to overcome obstacles against them, or a heel steals a victory by exploiting the gimmick to win. That allows the babyface to lose strong. It's not rocket science but I don't know, I don't book anything.

Watching wresting in the 90s when Mick Foley was in his prime, I thought a backyard wrestling match would be cool. You'd have a little yard with grass and a shed in there. I'm sure you could throw some other interesting stuff in there.

I actually feel like World War 3 would work a lot better these days; the biggest problem with it was the fact that the 3-way picture-in-picture TV format of the matches would wind up leaving the action too small and grainy to really make out much on TVs of the time, but here in the widescreen HDTV era, those issues would be mostly if not completely eradicated.
