People outside the south will never know how over Rock'N'Roll was. They shut down malls when they showed up and even had an amusement park shut down because the people were in such a frenzy. From the Carolinas to Louisiana and Mississippi, all the way up to Arkansas and Kentucky, Rock'N'Roll ruled the south.

Ricky & Robert were crazy over in the south during the 1980's, particularly 1983-1988. From Mid-South to Jim Crockett Promotions...Oklahoma to the Carolinas....they were crazy over. In my opinion, The Fantastics had better overall quality matches with the Midnight Express. But The Fantastics could not get the fans behind them like the Rock n Roll Express did. Plus.....the selling....Robert was good, but Ricky Morton was one of the greatest sellers in pro wrestling history, thanks in large part to Tojo Yamamoto (who trained so many Memphis legends and made selling an art form). Got a little off topic there....but yeah, The Rock n Roll Express could do no wrong during the 1980's down south. Great pro wrestling.

I was there at The Baltimore Arena for this atrocity. The Network footage nor tape does justice to the rage that everyone had and the "We Want Flair" chant were much louder than is on any footage. Also, the Scaffold Match was changed because of Maryland's Athletic Commission as well as the "Mixed Tag" which are still technically illegal in Maryland. This was the original hi-jacking of an atrocious show. Great job reviewing this near company killing PPV.

I was actually at this PPV in Baltimore. I had no idea Flair wasn't at the show until right before, the entrance to the arena o went in had a guy who had copies of a "dirt sheet" (I want to say it was Meltzer's I don't have it anymore and can't remember), and it had the headline about Flair not in WCW. From the START the "we want Flair" chants were going and didn't see to stop.

@@TherealRNOwwfpoohAnd Eric Bischoff Just Confirmed it That WCW Created The Character And Vince McMahon Just Changed The Name. It Had Been Said Vince McMahon Never Came Up With An Original Idea. After Ric Flair Left WCW To Go To The WWE, The Dangerous Alliance Storyline Made Fans Positively Forget All About Him Instead Of The Company Being Very Hurt.
@TherealRNOwwfpooh
@TherealRNOwwfpooh 6 ай бұрын
@@allencollins5666 Are we talking about when Ric Flair left in 1992 (complete with taking the Big Gold with him to the WWF due to paying out the deposit on the gold the champion had to abide by to carry it around with him before getting reimbursed by the company he represented by getting the money back he was owed as champion, only for the TV executive in charge who never understood wrestling to balk incredulously at paying Flair what he was rightfully owed, which subsequently led to Flair refusing to give up the physical belt until a new regime in WCW finally paid Flair back the money -- with interest [Flair was keen to point this detail out later when he was interviewed about the situation] -- after which he gave back the Big Gold to WCW & instead used a blurred out WWF Tag Championship to continue his "Real World Champion" storyline) due to a disagreement with Jim Herd (the guy who told the "Nature Boy" [who basically stole Buddy Rogers' entire persona, so much so that they had a match together, in which Rogers basically passed the torch to Flair] that he was no longer over/popular, to cut his flowing beach blond hair & take up an unwanted Spartacus gimmick that would've fit in line with the recent _Gladiator_ / _Troy_ films, but simply wasn't _Ric Flair_ in terms of character, nor name value/crowd recognition)? Somebody is forgetting that once the WCW audience found out far too late that WCW had to scramble to put Barry Windham VS Lex Luger for their temporary World Championship (which didn't look nowhere near as impressive as the Big Gold, which Flair still had in his position until he was properly paid) in place of Ric Flair, the crowd in attendance turned on the match, loudly chanting "We Want Flair" in unison. The Dangerous Alliance led by Paul E. Dangerously (Paul Heyman, pre-ECW) may have been a successful stable that had "Ravishing" Rick Rude, Medusa (aka Alundra Blaze), a no-longer "Stunning" but pre-ECW & certainly pre-WWF/E Steve Austin, "Beautiful" Bobby Eaton, and The Enforcers ("Double A" Arn Anderson & the owner of Larry Land himself, Larry Zsbysko) in it, but as good at being bad -- they were heels, after all -- as they were, they certainly didn't stop fans from forgetting about the face of the NWA/WCW, because excluding Sting, nobody epitomized WCW more than Ric Fair, especially in the pre-nWo era.

Flair's firing before the show had more of an impact on Luger than anyone else. It may not have saved this show, but it might have saved Luger's title run by giving it some credibility to start the run.
@martyklestadt6766
@martyklestadt6766 2 жыл бұрын
According to Barry Windham on one of the WWE DVDs about either WCW or the Four Horsemen, it was supposed to be Windham who would get to have a run with the WCW World title had Flair not left. (Maybe at Starrcade?) Instead, they had Luger beat Windham here, and Windham missed his turn to be World champion. He would later get a run with the NWA (later WCW International) title, but that was not an official World title at the time.

What is sad is Morton had he turned heel in the mid 1980's , he'd have been huge. By 1991 the business had changed a lot and Morton then was a low card guy. Also in a shoot interview , Gibson did tear his knee up in real life and it blew a big pay day the team had waiting in WCW as they were gonna be pushed. Gibson told Morton to do the singles run when the company suggested it.

@@joshbouman1654 oh im not a booker and if I could have watched this live back in 1996 I would have loved it. But watching when I was in my late 20s vs when I was 8 in 1996 are two totally different things. I didn't hate it or anything I just didn't think the ppv itself was anything special outside of the Hogan heel turn and the NWO storyline. And to some extent I think even WCW realized that too. If you listen to the commentary team they just put over the main event more than anything else, and I think that's really smart tbh.
@joshbouman1654
@joshbouman1654 5 жыл бұрын
@@heisensaul5538 I think that's part of what makes that night so special, it's a legitimate twist. In the months prior they were doing the Uncensored Cage match, THE YETAY and the utterly horrendous Slamboree show. The fact they turned the entire product on it's head with one segment on an otherwise mediocre show is what makes it so memorable.

@@joshbouman1654 The main event is the best part of that show, You wont get any argument out of me from that. But once again, looking at the undercard, even like the Ric Flair match was just ok, and usually he tends to have the best match on the card.

Even worse, BW was sort of reprogrammed going into the match and doing promos afterwards in which he "didn't know what Lex Luger was capable of". So he walked out on Luger three years earlier to join the Horsemen and feuded with him for most of the next two years (other than his Widowmaker stint), yet he "didn't know what Luger was capable of". Good job WCW!

The Russian Chain match was booked like the majority of Koloff's Chain Matches. The other finish I recall seeing out of several of their matches was the babyface getting the fourth corner when the referee was distracted, or knocked out (thus not seeing him win the match) leading to Koloff knocking the babyface out with help from foreign object/outside interference in the center of the ring to get all four corners easy with the ref looking.

I think the worst part about Brad Armstrong? A number of wrestlers have said Brad Armstrong, behind the scenes, is one of the funniest, most charismatic guys there is. It's like, he has all this personality but he could never seem to get it to come across on camera. On camera he was just a fantastic, very underrated worker. Also when I first watched this show, I felt sorry for OMG for having to try to carry El Gigante. OMG was never a great worker or anything but he was at least competent as far as big huge guys were. Sometimes you can tell a guy is really doing his best and OMG was trying *really* hard.
@jonathanturbide2232
@jonathanturbide2232 Жыл бұрын
Yeah either Brad just wasn't able to be "that guy" once the camera was on due to shyness or just being incapable of doing it, or perhaps he decided to be serious/dull/vanilla on purpose since he was representing the Armstrong name and was taught by his dad to take the business seriously. Either way, him being unable to connect with the fans or to show his bosses he could be more than just a "good hand" really hurt his career. Good career, but it should have been much much better. Truly the definition of underrated.
