I remember watching that PPV. Our mom ordered it for me and brother as a birthday present. She wasn't a wrestling fan (told us every week it was fake), but she knew enough about wrestling due to it being a big thing as she grew up. When Hogan turned heel, my bro and I just stared at the screen, dumbstruck. My mom looked just as shocked and said "Holy shit, really?"

For the part about Heenan, he didn't even know it was going to happen. None of the announcers were told beforehand in order to get authentic reactions. So the "who's side is he on" comment was within his kayfabe character, and in this case, a well timed coincidence.

I totally agree, and as well in the match, we were expecting a third man on the heel team, and here comes another guy. In the context of the match and kayfabe, of course Heenan would say that. Really, something like "He must be the third man!" would make a lot more sense as a natural reaction for all of the announcers, so I think any criticism of Heenan here is ridiculous.

@@welcometothemovies9157 sometimes that was true but other times the commentators talked a lot about the cruiserweights, especially when they would bring in Mike Tenay specifically for their matches before he joined the team full time. My brother and I watched this live, we were 16 & 15, respectively, had been massive hulkamaniacs in the late 80s & early 90s, and had just started watching wrestling again with WM12 after stopping after WM9. I knew Hogan was in WCW, but was oblivious to his entire run prior to this. But when Hogan dropped that leg on Savage, we EXPLODED in disbelief, we had been trying to predict who the 3rd man would be, but never in a million years suspected it'd be Hogan. Within two minutes, one of my friends called, breathless, screaming, "Are you watching this?!?!?!?" We couldn't believe it. I logged onto AOL, and the WWF chat rooms were all flipping out about this angle. It truly is one of those "time in a bottle" moments. Still the greatest heel turn of all time, despite the NWO eventually over staying itself by several years.

Yeah that's not what happened at all. The nWo was about the furthest thing from a "kiss of death" as you could possibly get for WCW and had nothing to do with their eventual sale. Watched Bobby "The Brain" Heenan growing up and the "Whose side is he on" line fit his character perfectly as a heel commentator. For me, when he said it, it reinforced that Hogan (the penultimate good guy who was never my favorite but was still supposedly a "Face") was of course going to help out WCW.

27:16-27:45 I agree 1000%, Brian. The Hulk Hogan heel turn/formation of the New World Order is one of the greatest things to ever happen to wrestling. Granted, I started watching wrestling 2 or 3 years after this moment, and was exclusively to WWF/E. But, I can't deny how important and iconic this moment was. Also, the heel promo Hogan cut amidst the heat he was generating and the trash being thrown in was, and still is 23 years later, glorious. I know Terry Bolea gets a lot of justified hate for what he's done behind the scenes and in real life. However, you cannot deny how important Hulk Hogan is to wrestling, good or bad. Without him, we not only would have wrestling as we know it today. But, we also wouldn't have two kick-starts to iconic eras in professional wrestling.
@johnreid1552
@johnreid1552 4 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Even the most ardent WWF/E supporter must recognize the impact Hogan's turn had on the industry. In the early stages of the internet we didn't have spoilers so it made it that much more shocking to watch.

With the moment of Bobby Heenan asking who's side is Hogan on, I've read some reports that the announcers weren't in on who the 3rd man was going to be with Hall & Nash. They were also told that Team WCW would lose men as the match progressed so they saw Hogan coming to the ring as the savior for Team WCW but Bobby Heenan stayed in character as someone who despised Hulk Hogan for about a decade & a half. At one point in the show Heenan insinuated that even Dusty Rhodes could be the 3rd man so the mood of don't trust anybody was still there with Heenan. I don't know if there's any truth to the announcers being left in the dark but Heenan questioning Hogan's intentions was completely in character & fit perfectly in the story.

I think Heenan saying "Who's side is he on?" does fit his established character, as you said, but I think it'd have been better if even he was relieved that Hogan was coming out to stop Hall and Nash's invasion. He could've said something like "I hate Hogan, but the enemy of my enemy is my friend, I hope he kicks their butts". If even someone like Heenan was taken in by him and then backstabbed, it'd have added a bit more to it all. As for Hogan, anyone downplaying his contributions to wrestling is really an absolute idiot. In the 80's and 90's he made HUGE impacts in the business. He's a politicker, not the best worker, bit of a shit in real life...but he was heavily involved in two HUGE boom periods for the industry, and played his part to perfection.
