I think it’s to do with hesitation because I was taught if you see an opportunity to go you go or you can fail your test for hesitation at roundabouts and that’s why the priority to the right rule goes out the window. 12:15 my personal view is that the hospital do this deliberately firstly as retribution to the locals and council who in May 2021 objected to the proposed 5 storey carpark and, secondly, the senior management are running the hospital down and will use the traffic chaos to strengthen their argument.

A few years back I was turning right at a mini roundabout and was on the roundabout when a car from the left smashed right into me, her excuse was that she didn't see me and that she thought she had the right of way, I told her to go back and read the rules of the road and get a fucking eye test. That’s the thing about miniroundabouts. Some are at junctions that are so tight, it’s practically impossible to around them, so you may have to, on occasion, ether clip them or drive completely over them. That does not mean however that the rules change and as always priority it to the vehicle approaching from the right.

There is no "first arrival at roundabout has right of way". Only try it you think your insurance company will pay out if you get rammed because you didn`t give way. Here`s a clue. They won`t. The situation at Epsom hospital is much the same as the problems we get at Frimley Park Hospital.

I think this misconception has kind of evolved from the fact that you should ensure your path is clear on a roundabout before proceeding. Especially on mini roundabouts. That idea developed into 'if someone is there first, you have to give them priority'. I can understand the confusion, but as you say, there is no 'first come, first served' rule. Personally, i just assume that 90% of other drivers are idiots, and adjust accordingly.

@@1milliondogs There sort of is a first-come first served rule in practice, because the 'give way to the right' rule applies on the junction itself, and not what you imagine might possibly be approaching in the distance from the right (although good judgment is advised, as you implied). Tony gets this aspect of it when he points out that he was on the junction before the Audi. If he were not, the Audi would technically (but not advisedly) have the right to enter the junction.

There are a few solutions for Epsom Hospital, all of which would cost a few bob. One: Remove the bollards and move the crossing further down the road. Two: As stated, make this entrance a one-way, and the south entrance one-way out (and left-turn only) Three: As much as Brits hate traffic lights, one at the north entrance which will alternate which direction gets to turn into the hospital. Four: Create a parking garage to handle the parking issue.

Don’t get hung up on the approaching from the right bit. Approaching just means getting nearer to; you could be approaching the roundabout 5 miles away. There is case law regarding mini-roundabouts which decided that priority is often hard to determine, and all drivers need to be prepared to give way. In this case, the other driver is clearly in the wrong as they have gone over the central markings, and, if you had collided, they would have been found mostly to blame as a result. However, you may well have also been deemed partly to blame if you were unable to stop.

It has occurred to me that perhaps Epsom hospital specialises in brain transplants and this is the queue of patients coming in for their surgery. Side note, I was told off my driving instructor the other day for *not* pinching the mini roundabout. For transparency it was at 51.255191,-1.113421 and I was heading north, turning right.

After years of wondering why I finally found the cause of the confusion on mini roundabouts. In AUSTRALIA it's whoever arrives first has priority, and AUSTRALIANS always say "there's no priority to the right". I think some people in the UK have been seeing those videos and assuming it applies here too.

In the UK, it's the first already on the junction, all other things equal, who has priority. I'm curious - how would 'no priority from the right' ever work? Is it like the USA 4-way stop, where you're just expected to work it all out at a walking pace, because nobody really stops? That usually works surprisingly well, by the way.

You have to give way. That's the law! Likewise they have to slow down or stop if there's something coming from their right. It has worked for nearly a century like this.

@gingiitausuas3532 that's still not quite right, nowhere does it say the traffic must already be on the roundabout - it's the same as any other give way situation - if you make someone with priority over you slow down or change direction then you have failed to give way. We are taught in lessons to check vehicles approaching the roundabout and think about who is able to join without stopping to avoid this exact problem. The "on the junction" is a total myth fabricated by people who like pulling out in front of people and giving them the finger. It is categorically incorrect according to instructors, the highway code and any other official sources. 100%.

@@elliottsw I totally understand - but my point is that those dotted lines on the road demarcate a junction, and that's the stricture. On The Junction, and not to traffic not on the junction, you give right of way to the traffic from the right, as you correctly state. if the Highway Code says something vaguer, - good luck to anybody approaching a junction at night and staring to the right wondering if something is approaching the junction. In practice, I'm surprised it all works as well as it does, to be honest. People seem to be kind, mainly.

Audi had no intention of stopping - hadn't even considered taht your vehicle might ben there because he assumed your entrance was blocked by the lorry. Love the way some people are trying to defend the clown in the Audi on the mini roundabout. You were over the give way markings, hence on the roundabout. He was behind the give way markings, hence obligated to give way to traffic from the right. Had you hit his car he would have been 100% liable for everything- no argument about this???

It seems more and more drivers now no longer treat mini roundabouts (the smaller painted circle on the road) as a roundabout and cut across them on the wrong side/fail to give way to the right. I was knocked down by a car coming out of a car park (Give Way line) onto a mini roundabout. I was already crossing the road to the right of the car and had he driven AROUND the roundabout correctly he would have passed behind me safely. Instead he simply ‘turned right’. Struck me on the right side of the roundabout (anti-clockwise on the wrong side of it). Police attended ambulance and photographs taken of scene. Police later rout to me to say NFA as no offences disclosed!!

Roundabouts are my biggest bug bare, the lane discipline is just nonexistent in most cases, even when it is so simple as there are only two roads off the roundabout, and it's hell when they have 4 or 5 options to leave from, I say it's all down to instruction whilst learning to drive, and we all know that the rule book goes right out of the window 30 seconds after you are given a pass certificate, I'm 67 and passed my test in the 70s, I have been a road user ever since then, both for pleasure and business, and I am appalled by the driving standards today, both by so called " professional" drivers and private drivers, and no it is not confined to the younger ones, it really is all ages and sexes

Well I did point that out to LDC. No specific reply from him but you may see that just like you he could have let the car go around and turned it into an Ashley Neal non event but that's not for LD , he makes events out of non events!! And in the previous video where it first came up, the incident straight after him had a black cab doing not the best emerge but again a mountain out of a molehill when he could just have reduced speed and given the cab space.

At the Countess of Chester hospital at busy times people don't park they abandon their cars as in Paris. In Wales e.g. Wthybush Hospital in Haverfordwest the parking's free so shoppers/workers use it so it's rammed with people who are not using the hospital. Seems ti's all hospitals these days. Make the hospitals biger and bigger and don't worry about parking

I don't condone their actions but I do understand why they did it. Part of it is definitely impatience but it is also the only way to help traffic flow and try to get the queue down away from the high street. If anything, maybe they should remove the bollards. I know they are there to help pedestrians get into the hospital, but they could put a zebra the other side of the junction maybe so cars coming from the town centre wanting to go straight can overtake the queue for the hospital legally, assuming there is space with oncoming traffic that is, and pedestrians still have their safe crossing point.

In the early 80s I had a girlfriend who was a nurse at Epsom hospital you drove in the way you did but at the back of the hospital was the nurses accommodation you could go out that way as you went out of the nurses accommodation car park turned right it would take you up to Epsom racecourse I used to go in and out that way, don't know if you can now I haven't been there since 1986ish

It's all changed quite a bit now, where I entered the hospital you can't get to the rear exit of the hospital it's all one way coming towards me you can still go from the back of the hospital to the front of the hospital but you can't turn right to get to the main hospital entrance that way because you can't turn right again it's one way you have to go back out onto the main road and turn right where everyone was turning right in the clip. Hopefully that makes sense 😁.

2:36 there is only 2 thing there. First, hes vision was blocked by the truck, same as yours, you both enter almost at the same time, which lead to this issue. But that wouldn't be any issue if he did went around the roundabout, that is true, and the biggest issue really. Two people can enter the roudabout at the same time, but then can't cross the middle at the same time. So for judgement, you both had visibility issue, so it make sense to go slow, he went a little faster. For roundabout "correctness" yes he was on fault there, one don't simple go over the middle. It supposed to big a giang concrete block. Honestry 3:30 I would just stop at the right position just before that car, and waited her to move instead of going over the roundabout

I do not think the criticism of you was that the others drivers were in the right and you without priority, it was and is that you showed a distinct lack of forward thinking and, like the other drivers, drove into a potential area of danger that you could not see to be clear. Yes, the other cars were driving carelessly, but I do think a good, forward thinking driver either would have waited for the lorry to clear the roundabout and so get a good view yourself AND make yourself clear to others, or edge forwards slowly until you can likewise be sure it is safe to proceed.

Safe driving is about skill, not their payment method. I do think that the person is new to that car and hasn't gotten used to the size of the vehicle which does take time to learn. At last! A comment from you that relates to driving. A pity you've got it all back to front. I'm not advocating the driving of the other car. If there was a collision then I would say responsibility is 50/50. The car should not have emerged until his view was clear and Tony made no allowance for that possibility so it was poor hazard awareness on his part. You cannot go barging around a roundabout saying 'my priority - get out of the way'! Tony has said he's a fan of Ashley Neal yet constantly ignores Ashley's advice of turning an event into a non event which normally only requires a slightly slower speed. The clowns are the people like you and Tony that think this is OK. 80% of his driving is good but he let's himself down badly when defending the times he gets it wrong. Don't forget that a few months back he devoted a whole video to defending a similar roubdabout case near Leatherhead. That backfired on him as 75% of the comments were saying he was wrong! Including Ashley Neal.

At the first mini roundabout if the Audi driver had not cut across the middle there would have been no problem at the second roundabout if you had not crossed the middle there would have been no problem learn to drive properly yourself before criticising others I cut the middle also and know it's wrong so I keep my gob shut

Just for a change I agree with first roundabout but not with the second. The other vehicle was on the roundabout and should have cleared but you should have stopped at GIVE WAY LINES until it cleared . The give way lines are there for a reason. Any vehicle on any roundabout should give way to the right that is on the roundabout however many lanes there are. I just can’t understand why you don’t get the concept.

Now tell me where it says any of that in the Highway Code because what I say is in the highway code, what you tend to forget for some strange reason is the other car had giveaway lines too and didn't stop because it couldn't clear the car in front of me that was turning right that had priority over it then I turn up and I've got priority over it as well, I'll say it one more time it's not first come first serve it's priority to traffic approaching from the right.

The main problem with you Tony is that you need everything to be black and white. "I'm right and they're wrong". Quite a few people on the previous video of 'that roundabout' comnented that there was shared responsibility for any error and you had ample opportunity to reduce speed and take a wider course and not use your horn. You say that you're a big fan of Ashley Neal but you are yet to take on board his approach of turning an event into a non event. And funnily enough, in the last video after 'that roundabout' you had an event with the back cab that could have been a non-event but you made it an event. All you needed to do was slow down.

This is the preamble to the general rules 103-158 - "The rules in The Highway Code do not give you the right of way in any circumstance, but they advise you when you should give way to others. Always give way if it can help to avoid an incident." This is what LDC ignores every time he has drivers 'get in his way'! It doesn't mean the other driver is right but it is no excuse for his aggression and inappropriate use of the horn.

When it comes to the roundabout I don’t think the big problem was the failure to give way as both of you could have gone at the same time. The problem is both of the cars went straight over the middle, running over the concept of a roundabout. I’ll be upfront, my philosophy is that if your vehicle is able to do it you should always go around the roundabout, if you don’t you don’t have much of a leg to stand on when moaning about the failures of others (sometimes, it’s only a problem because of the failure to go around).

It's not only your philosophy but it's in the Highway Code as to what you should do at a mini roundabout and which LDC admits that he often does not do!! Only large vehicles that cannot navigate around are allowed to 'straight line'. Having said that there are some mini roundabouts where even a car cannot go around.
