Missed that flash. I have been driving nearly 60 years. Yes I'm that old biddy who drives at the speed limit, always indicates where I'm going, and will yell if you use your phone or park in disabled bays because " I'm only going to be 5 minutes ", when you're not disabled. I curse when people don't have manners, cyclists don't follow the rules of the road, don't indicate or use their mobiles. No wonder I have high blood pressure 😂

Thank you for the videos. I,too, am an old sod who passed his test many years ago. 1976 to be precise. A time when people had manners, both on and off the road. I drive a fair bit along the roads shown in your videos so if you encounter an even older sod than yourself in a grey BMW hatchback using indicators and the correct lanes, that may well be me. Keep up the good work and hopefully the Grand Theft Auto generation will learn how to use the roads in the real world 🤞🏻

Thank you so Much Tony for this it’s given me more confidence. My request was because I had a bad experience on a slip road joining a motorway I was with my instructor and my speed matched I’d found my gap but then the car decided to speed up and closed my gap so I had to brake hard as I was going to enter my instructor beeped her cos it was dangerous. Luckily there was no car behind me. So it made me wary of joining from a slip road. But my instructor always told me never assume plan for both. Thanks again great video ❤

How are you on the procedure for leaving? The Highway Code is a bit vague and says get into LH lane well before exit and indicate in plenty of time. I ensure, after being given notice of 1 mile warning that I'm in LH lane by the time the ½ mile sign appears and start indicating when the three hundred yard indicator appears ( three parallel diagonal lines).

great video on sliproads, there is one thing you should NEVER do on a slip road, DO NOT EVER stop on top of the slip road and expect someone to let you in, you will die, you will get rammed by a 45 ton truck doing 60 mph and you will be a red stain on the road.

Some well known national driving schools ought to see there is a business opportunity where they can offer “motorway craft” driving lessons to established drivers that want to be better and safer, at higher speeds. - It’s not just an older age thing, as clearly some nervous younger drivers think “going slowly” means they are likely to be a bit safer…- Not always true though…

A brilliant video. This should be shown to everyone before their test. Also, should be compulsory for drivers to have motorway lessons. I know of people who really believe that those on the motorway should give way to joining traffic!! Unbelievable. I passed my test in March 1972 so I've a few years on you. I drive a lot on the A14. Between Huntingdon and kettering there are several junctions with short slip roads. Many times I've had to stop on the slip road because of the sheer weight of traffic. The trick is to stop early leaving as much slip road available to accelerate on to get out into the lorries. But Ive also had idiots pass me then stop when the slip road runs out. Madness.

Same on the A38 and A52. Slip roads around 100 yards long with a blind 90 degree turn to get onto and see if there is a gap. If you creep you shorten the slip road…if you stop drivers behind get irate and try to get around 🤷🏻‍♂️

Parking tickets don't count (unless you park somewhere dangerous). I do not park illegally but I have nevertheless collected a (very) few parking tickets in my time by being fooled by the way restrictions are displayed. Councils seem to love inventing signs that con you into thinking you've done the right thing and you haven't, or having plated restrictions on a single yellow that are at variance with the signs a tiny little way up the road on the same continuous single yellow line (Thanks London Borough of Camden).

I use my cruise control all the time when I'm driving (yes, I'll help it out when going up a steep hill/mountain), but I don't want a ticket so if I'm speeding it's maybe 1 MPH. I'd rather get where I'm going safely, so I leave with lots of time to spare so I don't have to speed. Love your practical rules for slip roads...they are the rules of the road and they do work.

Tony, I'm gonna pull you to task over your comments re the Range Rovers. They are without doubt incredible machines and are serious workhorses. I have had 3 of them since 1976 and would get another tomorrow if I wanted to change cars. The cars, like the Beema and the Merc are excellent vehicles, the problem comes from the driver, but the same problem can come from a Fiesta or a Fiat 500. If the driver is driving like a TIT then 100% call him/her out, but it's not the car. My driving has been 60 yrs NO claims since I passed my test on 7th Oct 1964 at the South Croydon test center. I have owned everything from Mini van to 7.5 ton tipper, Transits - Boxers for work and more cars than I can recall but my real love was a 6 ltr Jeep Cherokee that would do 15ish to the gallon pulling 2 tonnes of sand on a 4 wheel tipping trailer. Love your channel and your comments, but remember the car only does what the TIT behind the wheel makes it do.

I had an incident recently with someone emerging from a slip road. The weather conditions were horrible… and i was in the inner lane and being overtaken on the right. The car on the slip road was ahead of me and had a decent gap so I decided to accommodate them and hang back. You know, to give the space to emerge from the slipway, good filtering. But no, nothing doing! This plonker instead of simply emerging into the decent gap that they had kept slowing down and slowing down until we were nearly alongside each other (me slowing down too because I don’t want to crash into them). It got to the point where they came to a complete stop but not in the slip-road… instead abreast the end of the slip-road and the live lane… We were so lucky that I just had space in the outer lane because I then had to go around them.

Passed my car test in 1965 age 17 and at age 21 I became one of those dreaded "professional drivers", driving buses, coaches and trucks in various countries, until I retired at 65. And I certainly don`t profess to be the best driver. Had a few nick nicks when I was a motorcyclist back in the 60`s (Mad mile and the A24 Mickleham S`s and even Wimbledon Parkside) and had one or two knocks over the years, but with the mileages I covered that wasn`t too bad. It seems the best way to tackle slips roads these days, is eyes shut, foot down and aim for lane 3, much the same as they tackle the good old Rosehill roundabout.

I have said for many years that slip roads is a bad name for the function . It should be called an acceleration lane. I am an ex HGV driver who has had many close calls with cars not knowing how to join properly and it is no fun. When I join a motorway in my car I boot it and hit the motorway at 60 or 70 mph or more if a wagon is bearing down. At this speed you have more options IE brake and go into the hard shoulder or accelerate out of trouble

Great video sir - good advice all round. I too have 40 years plus and definitely think driving standards have become significantly poorer. Regrettably I think this may be a reflection of society in general where consideration for others (let alone common sense) have gone out the window. So many of your clips show just how rude & entitled drivers have become - so much so that you are almost surprised when you are given your actual priority at an obstruction / roundabout / junction or actually given a Thank You signal when you have done the right thing. Keep up the good fight !

Some of the worst drivers are actually those who have been driving for 30- 40 years. They were inconsiderate when they were young, never updated their habits, and kept driving the same awful way for 40 years. I both drive and cycle and see it often, it can be that younger drivers are much more considerate towards me on my bike, whilst older drivers can be fairly dangerous. Not always, but often.

A very well put together video. Can't argue with anyof that. I'll be on the road 40 years next August although I was a motorcycle courier before I even took my driving test. People these days drive their cars with no awareness of the surroundings or what they are supposed to do. In SE London we have to contend with African style driving ie pootling along the outside of the dual carriageway and even stopping and talking to their mates the other side of the reservation. It's all going on.

All good stuff Tony and that should help Michelle a lot. I would add that contrary to what the car does at 12:25 to 12:40, stay in lane one for a while so that you get a feel for the flow of the traffic ahead and behind. You see too many times, vehicles almost instantly swoop into lane two or even three. See what traffic is coming up behind and assess the flow of traffic ahead. Often you will see people travelling too fast to a bunch of traffic ahead is slowing down and they haven't assessed that properly. Once you have got a feel for what the traffic is doing around you and you wish to speed up to 70 then ensure there is a safe gap for you to overtake into, if needed, and progress.

Agree absolutely with this. In my experience it is motorway/junction specific. The northbound M5 at Junction 19 is notorious for this, with traffic joining (mostly from Portishead) and trying to go from the slip road (which becomes lane 1) to lane 4 within about two hundred yards. Crazy, especially at rush hour, and even more so when the bunts then dive back to lane 1 to exit the M5 at Junction 18 all in about a mile and a half.

Yes, it was a very informative video for the uninitiated. My own take is that approaching a joining slip road and if lane two is clear, I will always move over. I have heard that that "man (or rather 'person') with red flag" is what Sadiq Khan intends to do next. Not that I give a flying foo-fa about that as I never drive in London, but you can be sure that the virtue signallers in Bristol and Wales will follow suit.

Way too slow on slip roads I see all the time, but now I see way too slow in the right hand lane on the slip road. It must be every other time I drive my car. 40mph sat in the overtaking lane heading on to a motorway/NSL A road. I use my horn, flashes, never get any impact. The people are usually chatting with their passengers, on the phone, or those people who move through life really slowly. You all know those types - the people who don't brush their hair 🙂

Are you sure there is no requirement in the Highway Code to help others merging from a slip road? At the start of the motorway section in the Highway Code “Many other Rules apply to motorway driving, either wholly or in part: Rules … 146 to 151” So, rule 146 (in part) “Adapt your driving to the appropriate type and condition of road you are on. In particular - do not treat speed limits as a target. It is often not appropriate or safe to drive at the maximum speed limit - take the road and traffic conditions into account. Be prepared for unexpected or difficult situations, for example, the road being blocked beyond a blind bend. Be prepared to adjust your speed as a precaution - where there are junctions, be prepared for road users emerging” I do believe all three, but in particular the last two, statements _can_ be taken as adjust speed (and / or position) to help those merge from a slip road 👍

You missed the off ramp, which is (in theory), the exact same in reverse; you are supposed to enter the exit lane at motorway speed, and slow down only on that exit lane; however I know of a number of exit lanes/ramps that are far too short and end in a hideously tight curve off to the left.

I think the whole of this video is the basis of what those driving instructors are saying. It isn't a case, as you have put it previously (and imply at the start of the video), to slow right down and let those joining out but if you can help out then do so. Obviously maintaining the same speed on the main carriageway is not always the best thing but a small (~2 mph) adjustment that helps someone merge is absolutely fine and is no different than if someone pulled into your safety gap in front, you would gently ease off to increase that space again. With forward planning this becomes second nature and I have never had any issues helping others out. There is one thing that really grinds my gears...the purposeful space closer. The ones on the main carriageway that close the gap you are heading into all because they don't want to share the road and believe all the tarmac is theirs. Absolutely no need for it and down right dangerous...like that one at 6:21. That has always been a nightmare junction with the entry and exit right on top of each other like that...and at 70mph. I thought there were rules around speed and junctions being close together than it had to be reduced to 50mph or 40mph...🤷‍♂

I didn't see the van get a ticket but I did wonder why the red car in front of you was all over the road and slamming on the brakes when the lane was completely clear for a good half mile. I would be interested to see the breakdown of viewers ages on your channel as a lot of the comments here today are from drivers with 40+ years driving and very few fines/claims amongst the lot. This says something about the standard of driving people over the age of 50 tend to have and also says a lot about how they drove when they were younger. The RAC says average cost for a 1st car today is about £4000-£4500 but when I was a kid it was under £50 and you did the work yourself. I started driving in 1982, I was 14, and I had an old Simca I drove on the farm and I graduated to a Talbot Alpine before passing my test where I shared a car with my mum, we had a rather spiffy Fiesta Ghia🤣 I've got a claim where I hit a deer one dark and foggy morning and a windscreen claim but nothing for the last 15 years or so👍👍

If you run out of slip road it is illegal to use the hard shoulder, so in very heavy congested traffic there are times when you have to slow up and even stop to merge in turn or wait for someone to let you in. That’s when the very sensible advice to speed up and merge breaks down.
@DeeSock
@DeeSock 2 ай бұрын
I'd add that you MUST consider other drivers, even those drivers joining from slip roads! "Rule 144. You MUST NOT...drive without reasonable consideration for other road users." In slow traffic you are expected to allow access from side roads: "Rule 151. In slow-moving traffic. You should....allow access....from side roads, as blocking these will add to congestion" And in faster traffic a 2 second gap in front is expected of every car therefore you should leave more than a 2 second gap if you are being considerate to drivers on the slip road so they can join without breaking this rule themselves: "Rule 126. You should...allow at least a two-second gap between you and the vehicle in front on roads carrying faster-moving traffic"
