Kudos to the kids at 6:20 for the little "thank you" wave. PS: I passed my California driving test in 1970, my UK car test in 1977, and my UK motorcycle test in 1980. (First time pass for all three)

You missed out the emergency stop. That was compulsory in Scotland in 1972. Always remember my test, it drizzled rain all morning and as the examiner said "when I hit the dash with my hand you will do an emergency stop". No sooner had he said that when a small child ran out from the pavement. I stopped, the examiner nearly hit his head on the dash and as we both recovered, he turned and said, "You've passed." Proudest day of my then seventeen-year-old life. The child got an almighty clout from its mother, by the way.

I passed my test in 1969 (on a motorbike) and 1971 (in a car), parallel parking, 3 point turn, reversing around a corner all included in the test, along with a lot more stuff. As a 72 year old codger, I love your videos. To the point and and your narrative is so funny. As to parking facing oncoming traffic at night. That also applies to daytime. The Highway Code says you SHOULD not park facing oncoming traffic. Time and time again I see driving school drivers picking up clients when parked on the wrong side of the road. It's a bad habit, lazyness and an offence at night. Illegal and enforced in some countries.

I'd never noticed before how much the front of the Ital looked like a MkIV Cortina! BL were their own worst enemy designing new models sometimes - the Ital was like a face lifted Marina, with lever arm front suspension when the rest of the world had been using Macpherson struts for a decade. I remember the advert where it was favourably compared to a Mercedes, being driven around what looked to me like some docklands, but I found the steering skittish on bumpy or rough roads.

@@Chewiebakke I used a Vauxhall dealership in the 1970s for servicing and they always lent me a car for the day. The owner, Graham was very temperamental. On a good day the loan car would be a Magnum, VX4/90 or in later days a Carlton or Cavalier. On bad days one got the Ital, a long-suffering and neglected shed of a car which had the most awful steering I have ever encountered. :)

I remember endless reversing round corners when learning to drive, the notorious corner used by many instructors in the area also went uphill. I'm 62 years old so in the top end of the demographic you showed at the beginning of the video. I passed my test (first time) in the early Eighty's. My driving instructor was an Ex- Senior Metropolitan Traffic officer who retired to Lancashire. After a few lessons with him he was confident enough in my skills to teach me a few driving techniques most people would not be taught, e.g.; Defensive driving / threat observation etc, much the same as todays Police driving test. Calling out observation to show I had situational awareness but never of course breaking any rules of the Highway code. His advice to me was to concentrate on what is in front of you and what might appear from the sides, to a lesser degree use your mirrors to keep an eye on what's behind you but what's behind you is not your problem! Over 40 years experience and still with a clean licence I think he taught me well. 👌👍.

I'm 53 and on 20th September would have been driving for 35 years. When I passed there was the test and a few questions after. Nowadays there is the theory test, hazard perception and the driving test, but our generation know far more about driving theory and hazard perception than young drivers. Also it used to be called the three point turn, but I think too many learners thought they had to do it in 3 rather than 5 or 7 or more so they changed the name to turning the car using the forward and reverse gears and without touching the kerb. As usual another great video, and your commentary is fantastic!!

To be clear, I had my test in the early 90s and it included all three manouvers: a three-point-turn, reversing round a corner and parallel parking (but on the same side of the road as the raffic is flowing).

One of my son's workmates passed his driving test a few months ago. I understand, from what my son said, that his instructor taught him four manoeuvres; how to parallel park, the turn in the road (3 to 23 point turn), left-hand reverse, right-hand reverse (into a parking bay). He was told by his instructor that he would only be tested on two of the four, one of which would be the parallel park, (because examiners have been instructed to include that) and the second would most likely be one or other of the reverse manoeuvres. Someone required to take an enhanced test, as happens when they have been naughty, will apparently be tested on all four.

I was on holiday in the Scottish Highlands recently and it's very common for "local" drivers to use bully boy tactics to make you move out of the way. Usually by getting right up close. All the smaller roads have lots of passing places, so it's easy to let them pass. But their attitudes show up what kind of drivers they are.

I braked, somersaulted and landed on the road with my damaged moped on top of me and she limped to the pavement screaming theatrically. An ambulance was called and she was whisked away with a bruised foot. Nobody checked if I was hurt. Fortunately I was wearing the right gear and only ended up with severe bruising down one side and two days off work. It cost me a new crash helmet, new wet suit and a bill for a buckled wheel. To add insult to injury I got a bill for her ambulance as one of the crew had taken my registration.

We had to do reverse (parallel) parking, three point turn, and reverse around the corner. With three point turn you were allowed to make it 5 point turn as long as you don't hit the kerb on a narrow road. Do have to say that standards have fallen now and lots of people who pass the test nowadays won't be be able to pass the exams then.

The one manoeuvre that I thought was a bit strange back in the day was where you cross over to the right hand side after passing a junction on your right...and then reverse around the corner and into the side street on your RIGHT. You then of course had to keep reversing well away from the corner before crossing back over to the left in forward gear, well away from the junction you just reversed around. I can totally understand the reverse around the corner to your left but the one that's to your right and from the wrong side of the road seemed a very strange one for me. I passed my test first time back in 1978 (yes I'm up there in your older demographic) and have never once used that manoeuvre.

Hi, In the last clip, I suggest that the lorry that was taking up 2 lanes, and going straight on has used this junction before and he has fallen foul of being on the inside lane and has had to put up with those greedy buggers who speed up going through the lights and then cut in !! Frosty ( 80 years old ).

I’ve driven since the mid sixties, from 1970 until 2010 drove an emergency ambulance, had some great driving tuition to do this. I’m now 76 and fit and well. But peoples mind set when I try and hire a car at 76 on holiday is an old git with a Zimmer frame lol 😂 just got charged €50 extra for two weeks car hire because of my age! All your comments of modern drivers are right, the whole thing needs a fresh look with some good old fashion common sense. Keep up the good work. 😊

Greetings from yet another old codger! Top notch ranting!!! The car in question was, I believe a Morris Marina/Ital,another reason why BL/Rover went tits up... I passed my test in 1973 when most cars would struggle to do 70 mph with the usual provisions,e.g. downhill, strong following etc. They had no gizmos like ABS etc. There was also a lot less of them on the road and nowhere near as many Audi's BMWs .... Keep on ranting,it's mostly true and very observant. And you're not as old an old codger as me!!!

As an "old codger" myself, still driving HGV too, I would defend the fuel tanker driver's positioning. What he is doing is called defensive driving, not having some boy racer (or Audi) up the side of him trying to beat him into the merge point causing them to not be concentrating on the road ahead. When you are driving fully laden at 44 tonnes gross, forward planning is essential to safe driving. This positioning also applies to those HGVs turning left or right at such junctions too as they do tend to take up (and need) far more space than most other vehicles on the road. I don't see his action in any way as bullying but more ensuring other drivers on the road understand the greater room a HGV needs when manoeuvring, whether round a corner or in a straight line to upcoming lane/road markings/street furniture, of which a following car driver may not be totally aware due to their lessened vision around the HGV in front. The thinking here is also highlighted in London to a great extent, where cyclists are urged not to put themselves into a position where it is likely they will be in danger from the lessened vision a HGV driver has from the cab. The pickup van driver however, moving onto the opposite side of the carriageway to complete his manoeuvre displays impatience, lack of understanding and ignorance towards other road users and causes safety concerns of all other road users.

Parallel parking facing the wrong way is an offence at any time here in NZ, for the reason you described. It is the easiest offence to spot as you drive around, and all to often drivers who do this have other offences like an expired registration or expired WoF (mot) and a couple of infringements can be issued to the one vehicle.

I think the 'turn in the road' and the 'reverse around a corner' were as much about vehicle control and vehicle positioning as observation. So many drivers seem unable to do either nowadays; what are easy three-point turns end up as multiple, multiple points turns, or drivers going back and forth on the same arc. That said, it does seem that more people reverse into parking bays. Whether they've figured out by themselves that a car is actually more manoeuvrable in reverse, or been taught it, I don't know.

I passed my test first time in 1980 definitely easier then I was so nervous I forgot to turn on my windscreen wipers on when it was raining and I went up the kerb when reversing round the corner. I was asked lots of questions at the end and passed. Passed the motorbike test as well so after Riding a motorcycle you learn so much. 43 years later I now drive for a living

Well, you really were muttering today, Tony. One good point here was at 06:17 when the schoolchildren thanked you for stopping. - that's communication! By the way, I'm 80, passed my test in Australia a week after my 18th birthday. But my father let me drive from the age of 13, on country roads. I really enjoy your channel.

6:13 a situation occurred to me when driving down a one way street with 2 lanes like here ,and your turning right at the junction and you let pedestrians go because they have right of way, but someone drives up the side of you and hits them because they run out because you let them cross. BANG!. They're dead. The driver gets points and a fine and the pedestrians are dead.

I will be 73 next month and have been driving for 50 years. The things that were drummed into my head before I got my licence are all still there, and the only accident I have had on the road was in 1987 when a cow emerged out of the dark on a very dark sleety, freezing night on our State Highway 1 here in NZ and I just did not have time to avoid it. I had a trailer on so wasn't going fast but while nobody was hurt, my car was totalled and the cow died. I use my mirrors frequently, all of them, and keep to speed limits and do not have any distractions going, like music, phone etc. because as we get older it is easier to become distracted so, just drive now. I have lived out in the country for at least the last 40 years and will move into the city sometime in the next 5 years because I live on my own with my dogs and it makes sense, but I am not totally looking forward to it, but my family are there. Needs must when we get older.

I only passed my test in 2016 and I even had to reverse round a corner. Kids have gotten more stupid with road safety, and the general standard of driving has got a lot worse just in 8 years. I get a bit jealous when my mum tells me what it was like to drive in the 80s.

When we changed from black and white licence plates to yellow (rear) and White (front) we are supposed to park on the correct carriageway. The reason was, at night you need to pass a yellow plate on the right and a white plate on the left. So, on a foggy night you’ll know which side to pass on. That didn’t last long though did it. 😂

40 years old here and I have my driving test in a fortnight. Would be very surprised if there's a parallel park on the opposite site of the road, as the only manoeuvre that has parking on the right is to then reverse two spaces. Have been taught turn in the road but know it won't be examined.

Another old git, 75, and I passed my test (1st attempt) in 1965. I completely screwed up my first attempt at reversing around a corner, as soon as I realised that it wasn't working, I asked to do it again and the examiner said OK. Fortunately, I got it right that time. I failed my motorbike test the same year because I couldn't start the bloody thing. It was an Ariel Leader. Wish I still had it, it's worth a lot more than the £75 I paid for it! Well, a bit more!

Im in the middle section of viewership , we had to 'practice' ; Turn in the road Reverse round the corner Parallel park Reverse into bay , We could have 2/3/4 to do on the test depending on the examiner (my instructor had me do turn in the road on the smallest road he could find and i had to do it in 3 or 4 )

The new test does not incorporate parallel parking on the offside. It incorporates stopping on the right hand side of the road and straight reversing two car lengths. The parallel parking occurs on the near side. Of the approximate six manoeuvres the candidate has to do one randomly chosen by the examiner. The test itself is longer and now incorporates ten minutes longer and a much greater diversity of roads which might range from single track roads with passing places up to fast dual carriageways with 70mph speed limit. It replicates normal driving more accurately and four out of five tests follow a sat nav.

I passed my car test in Sept 1990 in a land rover 110, whilst i was in the army. I then passed my hgv(rigid) Feb 1991. The 1st job i had after i passed mt test was to take the Kindergarten bus and pick up the officers kids and drive them to school. Best way to learn to drive carefully in my opinion. Yes i was told how to cross the road by the GCC man and my parents.

Great video as usual Tony. When I did my test I did a 3-point turn and reversed around the corner here in Ireland but I failed the first time because I called another driver a fucking idiot, so after the test I drove home alone, yes here in good old Ireland up to recently if you failed your driving test you could drive on your own after failing your driving test. I think it changed a few years back.

The parallel parking they teach for the test is not facing traffic, they reverse behind a car to the left with nothing behind, they don't do it on the right.
