That whole section on funding vs hierarchy is nonsense. Hierarchy is about road safety not money. I don’t care if you personally pay 100% of every road in the U.K., it still wouldn’t entitle you to run people over. So please don’t conflate safety with money. Incidentally the funding, maintenance costs, economic and social benefits, environmental costs etc. is far more complicated than you describe and the VED barely scratches the surface in funding it. Also, although councils are responsible for maintaining the roads they get the vast majority of their money from central government not council tax.

Hi Tony! Hope you’re well. I’ll start by saying cab stories is a great idea 😊. Today I was on a double decker bus on a fairly busy main road in Paignton, Devon, where a car just pulled out from a side road RIGHT IN FRONT of the bus. I couldn’t see if the driver was on their phone or anything because I was sat upstairs. It was incredibly dangerous because of course buses cannot stop on a pinhead particularly double decker buses. I take my hat off to the bus driver for reacting so calmly and quickly. He did hit the brakes of course but he didn’t use the horn or shout anything. He might have lit this driver up though or at least flashed them, but again being upstairs I didn’t see.

Petrol head moments - first one on the trailer is a Frazer Nash and the third, by the M3 turn off, is a Citroen Traction Avant. (my wife's favourite car) - I need a bigger anorak. BMW towing the FN on the trailer is allowed in the outside lane because it is a BMW. It's also probably out there as it wants the next junction. German car highway code is simple. Right lane to turn left or exit a motorway, left lane to turn right. Simples. That's why the other BMWs carved you up - they were going left.

Normally on St Giles in Oxford, there are hordes of tourist crossing that wide road, not looking. You were lucky to find it so empty. Even the Oxford Pedestrians Association has come up with a plan to change that road to have separate fully marked lanes for pedestrians, cyclists and cars with a wide area for people to sit on the other side. As it is a short wide stretch in between 3 narrower roads, it isn't worth changing the speed limit for that bit of road. As for the road past the hospital to Marston, that is ridiculous. It is a recent layout with wider bicycle lanes, so they don't need to put beware of cycle signs in the centre. That only makes sense in places like Cowley Road which doesn't have cycle lanes. Also more people travel to work in Oxford by walking or cycling than take a car [Census 2021], so the street design tries to protect the more vulnerable majority from the car driving minority. That is all that the hierarchy means - how vulnerable are different road users from the bad driving shown your videos. Paying tax does not give anyone the right to put others at risk, no matter how much self entitlement car wax they use.

Road tax/ "Emissions tax". If I want to put my vehicle on the road, even if the engine is not running...probably if it had no engine in it, I have to pay a tax to be on the road. If, on the other hand, I run my car engine in the driveway I do not. Let's say I have a little piece of land to drive on, or a petrol lawnmower, or a little speedboat. No one gives a hoot about emissions from those. But if I so much as push my car onto the road I need to have it taxed. Call it what you will, but it is a road tax in fact.

Regardless of how much cyclists protest that this isn’t the case, the fact is that motorists pay far more to the government in the various taxes and duties than cyclists do. Even EV drivers pay VAT on the electricity used to charge the car, and Insurance Premium Tax on their mandatory insurance. Once the bike and other equipment has been purchased, cyclists pay no ongoing taxes and duties in order to use it.
@johncranna94272 ай бұрын
oh dear - you're really just reinforcing the ignorance that LDC displayed in the last video and pointed out by many more people than he showed. The damage that cycles do to the to roads is infinitesimally smaller than cars and if there were only cycles and no cars then the required road network would be tiny and would involve no motorways. AA purely hypothetical situation but the cars pay more for the roads because they NEED more road. But then LDC doesn't understand road 'tax'. It's not road tax but VED - vehicle excise duty and relates to the emissions of a vehicle. Cycles emit no emissions and therefore their VED is zero. Ditto for electric cars currently but that will change soon and logically so because the car created more damage and requires a much bigger road network. But saying the cyclist does not contribute is poppycock as many cyclists pay income tax and council tax. The council tax repairs local roads and income tax pays the A roads and motorways.

Regarding your Hierarchy of Road Users you could sub divide the pedestrians to put runners at the top. I’m referring to the ones that run towards you in the road. They seem oblivious to what’s behind them and whether you can get round them and aim straight at you. They are not in the Olympics or organised marathon so just stop running and contribute to their own safety.
